Capt. Neil F. Schmid
Sioux Falls Composite Squadron
South Dakota Wing

Neil Schmid passed away Sunday, December 19, 2021, as a result of complications from a motor vehicle accident that took place in Arizona while on vacation. Neil will be remembered as one of the kindest, caring, and most genuine gentlemen to all who knew him.

Neil was born on January 6, 1948, in Sioux Falls, SD to parents Neil and Betty. He was the oldest of 9 siblings. He held degrees from St. Mary's College (BA in Business Administration) and University of South Dakota (MBA.)

On December 29, 1976, Neil was united in marriage to Glenda, in Sioux Falls, SD and his love for her was ever present, every day of their 45 years of marriage. As a couple, they shared a passion for travel, skiing, and deep friendships and close family ties.

Neil's career began as a computer programmer in CT, but he soon returned to Sioux Falls in 1971 to work with his dad at their family business, Viking Glass. He remained there for the next 25 years. In 2000, Neil began his real estate endeavors in the Sioux Falls area and in 2006, opened Cirrus Commercial Realty Services, which he had owned and operated ever since.

Second only to his love for Glenda, Neil's passion was found in the skies above. With 4500 flying hours, Neil was an accomplished pilot and flight instructor. He was President and a member of the Mockingbird Flying Club, Civil Air Patrol, and loved being aloft. In addition, Neil was an accomplished wood worker and all-around handyman. In the rest of his spare time, he gave generously with his talents to community organizations. He was a member of the South Dakota Symphony Board of Directors and was the former Chairman and board member of the Sioux Falls Regional Airport Authority, and various other groups.

Neil had a large and loving family; siblings Sue (Bob) Satterlee, Lin (Waldo) Klein, Mark (Mitzi) Schmid, Ellen (Darrell) Lind, Paul (Michele) Schmid, Pete (Nancy Levinger) Schmid, Chris (Alicia Conroy) Schmid, Betsy (Del) Lyren. He had 7 nephews, 4 nieces, 5 grand nephews, and 4 grand nieces.

Neil is preceded in death by his parents Betty and Neil Sr.
