Informed consent also means knowing that all COVID vaccine manufacturers have been exempted from liability by Congress if you have a significant reaction to the virus, and that Congress exempted all COVID vaccines from receiving protection from the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. It is instead covered by the Countermeasures Injury Compensation Program.

A difference between the two programs can be reviewed here:

If you have an adverse effect from a vaccine, you are encouraged to report it.

For an example on how, see this blurb from the Moderna EUA Fact Sheet:
Report vaccine side effects to FDA/CDC Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System
(VAERS). The VAERS toll-free number is 1-800-822-7967 or report online to
https://vaers.hhs.gov/reportevent.html. Please include "Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine EUA" in
the first line of box #18 of the report form.

In addition, you can report side effects to ModernaTX, Inc. at 1-866-MODERNA (1-866-663-
3762).

You may also be given an option to enroll in v-safe. V-safe is a new voluntary smartphone-based
tool that uses text messaging and web surveys to check in with people who have been vaccinated
to identify potential side effects after COVID-19 vaccination. V-safe asks questions that help
CDC monitor the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. V-safe also provides second-dose reminders if
needed and live telephone follow-up by CDC if participants report a significant health impact
following COVID-19 vaccination. For more information on how to sign up, visit:
www.cdc.gov/vsafe

I've never been a beta tester for software. I let everyone else get the early buggy versions. Then when its settled out, I go for it.

So should we look at requiring proof of vaccination & a negative test for activities like encampment?

I say yes, but I'm interested in other viewpoints.

arajca

It'd depend on where in the vaccination sequence areas are.

We should be following applicable laws and not invent more rules.

Operating on the assumption that vaccines have been completely rolled out and are available, I see no reason why we shouldn't require it.  If that's the only way we're going to get back in person, I'm for it.  COVID is never going away fully and it will outlast CAP at this rate.

Agreed, and venue partners (i.e. military bases & schools) will likely require it as well with some level of substantiation.

As much as I'd be in favor of them, the logistics of pre-encampment testing 100-150 adolescents
are non-trivial, and for better or worse, they only indicate that the person didn't' have enough
viral load to pop the test that day.  Nothing says they don't still get it on the way out of
Walgreen's when they high-five someone still waiting in line.

Perhaps by next year there will be better / inexpensive instant tests that could be administered
before a boot hits the ground by the HSO.  Imagine, though if one or more of the big-5 cadets or
seniors is barred from participation on gameday?

Ugh.

You require it and it depopulates us even further. We could be down to 25K in members after that.

I'll take 25,000 healthy members, no problem.

And we can rebuild, but if we don't get our heads out of our rear ends pretty soon we're going to be sitting at pretty low numbers anyway.  I see no reason to keep sitting on Zoom just because we don't have the intestinal fortitude to stand against loony anti-vaxers.

This statement in its context falsely concludes that every individual who receives the COVID-19 vaccine makes one healthy, and that individuals who do not receive the vaccine are not healthy. Anyway, do you really want to make Civil Air Patrol accessible only to "healthy" individuals?

Ergo every single person in the world who is wary of the currently available vaccine is an "anti-vaxer" [sic]? What offensive, politically-charged rubbish that is. Cynical, too. The first reply to this thread gives plenty of cause to think twice about it -- for thinking people, anyway.

Folks, consider the available facts (not all of which are to be found in this forum, but are not difficult to find) and make an informed decision for yourself and family. Don't be bullied by ad hominem displays like the above. I'm neither discouraging nor advocating taking the vaccine now, just some critical thinking and responsible discourse.

So no one that is overweight, smokes, or is disabled needs to apply?

OK folks, let's retract the fangs.

Getting a bit off track here. Can we dial it back a bit?

If you want to participate in person, get the vaccine.

If you don't (or can work remotely), then don't.

UWONGO2

Early in the pandemic I had the opportunity to ask Mr. LaFond if vaccination may be required to participate in cadet activities such as encampment. He said it was something they were discussing, but being so early in the pandemic they obviously couldn't give any kind of definitive answer.

I haven't heard anything regarding this from NHQ/CP since then, although the end of this pandemic seems no closer now than it did back then. If this only affected those who refuse to be vaccinated, I'd be ok with the idea that if they want to roll the dice and participate even though it might kill or severely injure them, sure, go ahead. The problem of course is that you get a big group together at a wedding or holiday party it invariably ends up killing someone who wasn't even there.

Would we require the flu shot as well? Will we need to prove that when we were younger we got the ones for polio, mumps, measles, etc?

Point being ... once the door is opened .....

If we are requiring one vaccine, then we should require all vaccines.

We also will need to make sure we have a compliant way of storing medical information.

Probably require annual fitness assessments too, just to make sure we have HEALTHY membership numbers.

Compliance reminders for when the vaccinations are considered no longer effective and you need a replacement shot.

Verification that the flu shots received match up with the strains we are currently seeing in the wild.

I'm sure we won't have any additional cost or time commitments to membership because of this.

We also need to update the 2b reasons to include "failure to keep to vaccination schedule."

Yes, this is the way forward. This will enhance CAP readiness, increase membership participation and make us a more viable partner in all of our missions.
