Anyone here ever check this out?

Seems cool, but I lack flight sim and a computer worthy of playing it on so I have not been able to play..

Its pretty cool, a couple of my units have it setup and you can fly grids, search for ELT's, etc.

We've been discussing using it as inputs for tabletop missions and for SAREx's when the weather precludes flying.

Back when I had time to sit in front of the computer, I used to be a regular on VATSIM. I mainly liked to control on there (C1- ZAB), but did fly.

From what I've heard, the vCAP has been stood up quite a few times, by quite a few different people, and each time, NHQ threatened legal action.

Side note- VATSIM helped me tremendously with my instrument rating. Also has helped quite a few other people I know become better using the aircraft radio lingo.

Why would National do that? [I believe you!] I just don't see the harm... if anything I see it as being a positive thing

No idea. Probably because it was being run by cadinks and they didn't want gross misrepresentation being done by teens.

But, if it was something better controlled at a higher level, sure, it'd be good.

Looks very cool. I expected to see avatars of officers guarding a pile of pixilated doughnuts, but did not. Maybe that's imbedded somewhere.

Is there a way to participate as a mission staff member without needing MS FSX?

You know the tabletop/online SarEx that was done in our wing [ND]not long ago?.. do you think that could be incorporated? [I assume you were in on that]

Very easily... we used IMU to run the ex, but had the old fashioned Master Events List to generate the injects. This program could possible be coupled (not literally) with IMU, and possibly simulate the search asset side of the ex.

We just need a sugar daddy to spring for enough copies of MS FSX for all sites

There is, we have compatability for FS2002, FS9, and FSX.  We also pride ourselves on full NIMS compliancy, anthough we have been down for a month while I was updating and restructuring.  I have participated in all the missions vCAP has done, and I have never flown, I've been the IC.  Right now vCAP is working on specialty qualification requirements for Mission Base staff.
Oh, and on our second mission, I was Ground Team.
There are many non-flying options.

By the way, I was surprised to find a thread about vCAP on here....I never thought I would actually get vCAP that public.

Lastly, I notified NHQ a while back about vCAP, and they haven't said anything for or against it...I think putting a disclaimer on the site helped us out a little in becoming immune to legal action:
"The Virtual Civil Air Patrol (vCAP) is not in any way affiliated, endorsed, condoned, or even acknowledged to exist by the Civil Air Patrol (http://www.cap.gov), the US Air Force (http://www.af.mil), the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center, FEMA (http://www.fema.gov), the American Red Cross, or any other private, public, or government entity.  Virtual Civil Air Patrol, copyright 2007"

Hurray for VATSIM!  ;D

I've been active there now for about a year, S1 TWR at ZTL, working on S3 OTS since like forever.

Definitely helps out, especially when I need an AE lecture to feed the cadets, heh. I just give 'em ground school info. Keeps everybody happy, and covers a good amount of modules.

Although with me taking another astronomy class this semester, I'm going to try to put some more of the space stuff into things.

If any of the units in ND want more info on vCAP, please let me know. As one of the Sq CC's and the creator of the vCAP training center, I would be more then willing to help set up some FS training.

I feel your pain. I passed my C3 written 3 years ago, but still haven't done the OTS. I'm now ARTCC-less until I decide to get myself active again.
