Hi im getting ready to go to my first encampment its the Texas wing summer encampment at camp swift army national guard base in bastrop Texas!!!  But i have no clue whats gonna happen does anyone have any advice and will i be in a squad bay or a dorm?
ThankYou!

Good luck at your first encampment. I remember mine like it was yesterday, but that's a whole other story.
Best thing to do is ask your chain of command on what to expect at that encampment. Every Wing is different in their own right.
CAP is what you make of it. If you don't put anything in to it, you won't get anything out of it.

Camp Swift is a pretty decent location. You will be in a squad bay type facility with bunk beds.  I remember going there as a TAC for Winter Encampment several years ago.
First encampment?
Pack by the packing list. Take everything that's on the list and little or nothing that's not.
Take an open mind and a thick skin. Listen to what's being said, but don't stress out. If it sounds like someone's chewing you out, correct what it is they're not pleased with and do it even better the next time.
Keep an outstanding attitude at all times.

Thanks i think that will help! ;D

Also, there are many topics covering every aspect of encampment, so you can check them out for some good tips/ advice.

By hydrating. Even when you're not thirsty. Frequently.

Also, do at least a moderate amount of pt every day, especially if you live a rather sedentary lifestyle. Start that a month ahead of time (or ASAP) to get the best results. PT will help you not only with the morning workouts, but will increase your stamina for the whole week.

JROB

I would suggest that if you're not a morning person you should try to become one. Reveille blows usually at 0600 and Taps isn't until 2200.

That's not what he asked. I'm waiting for him to clarify his communication.

Is he talking about the grade on our uniforms? Ps, I might know your flight sergent for encampment. Sergent rocha? He doesn't yell much, consider yourself lucky.

??? Why does he need to yell at all? Or any of your other flight sergeants?

Yelling can be perfectly appropriate at encampment if supervised.

Yes, absolutely, if someone is about to walk in front of a moving vehicle yell as loud as you can. As a leadership tool, it's relatively useless.

No, it's not.

The most effective leaders speak with a strong, direct tone that commands authority.
"Yelling" is only used to announce or intimidate.

The first happens in loud environments and is short-lived, the second is inappropriate for CAP.

I remember many years ago at Summer Encampment we had a squadron commander who was also a cadet at the Citadel. The encampment started on Friday and by Sunday evening he was so hoarse from yelling that he sounded like Froggie off of Our Gang. His nickname among some of the seniors seemed very appropriate, "Semper Pscycho".

If I had had any say in the manner, he would have been gone before his voice got anywhere near that condition.

This is yet another visit to the Land of Internet Imprecision. (tm)

There is no rule that even suggests that is always inappropriate to raise one's voice while participating in our terrific CP.

Indeed, the CP has used a military training model for over 60 years.  And raised voices are often found in military training situations, particularly when addressing groups or in noisy situations.

The problem comes up when we start using subjective terms like "yelling" which tend to mean different things to different people.

For some folks, any use of a raised voice means "yelling."  ("I was in front of the PT formation and I needed to yell to be heard by everyone.")

For others, "yelling" has a more limited and specific definition that depends on the facts and circumstances in each incident. ("The flight sergeant yelled at the cadet who was standing beside her in the barracks.")

This is probably one of those "I know it when I see it" situations where almost all experienced CP officers actually observing a situation will agree whether it is appropriate or not.  But those same officers will likely disagree if all they see is a subjective written description of the same incident.

That is why we require experienced and mature CP leaders to be present at all cadet activities.

Also, you get extra points here for spelling and grammar, that's the only way to win the new member contest.

Yes you can wear your ribbons and your shoulder cord. The food prepared by the encampment staff is friggen awesome. I enjoyed every meal. You will get an SOI when you check in and you will be required to study it during every moment you are not encaged in something else. If I were you I'd study the items such as chain of command, the air force song, etc. Tell your friend to check the website to see what flight he's in.
