Is it possible to bring my banjo to encampment? Are instruments allowed

Possible, as in the ability to transport it to the event? Maybe.

Allowed? Probably not. This isn't Boy Scout camp, where you might have a nightly sing-along around the camp fire. If this is your first encampment, you won't have time to be doing anything with it, other than pondering opportunities to play it when you should be concentrating on your current activity. It might also be a prank target, which is generally not a good thing.

As an aside, are you posing these Qs to your unit leadership? They are your local experts, and probably have most of these answers available.

1) It is highly unlikely that you will ever get an opportunity to play it.

2) Since space is limited and it is not part of standard equipment, there will probably be no place to keep it near you. It might end up in a closet or supply room until you get ready to go home.

3) You run the very real risk of being known to your fellow students as "Banjo Lastname" for the next 80-90 years.

My suggestion - leave it at home.

Mind you - as nicknames go, you could do a LOT worse. So, maybe that would be worth considering in a different way...

No, do not bring it. As an item not on the equipment list, it would generally be considered contraband and it'll be sent home with your parent(s) when they drop you off.

The only instrument allowed is the bugle, which was requested by the encampment commander, and that is being brought by a specific staff member

Or everyone could start humming dueling banjos as you walk by. Although I age myself with that comment, as most Cadets may have no idea of hearing that tune while canoeing. LOL

*Note to self: ask all staff members if anyone can bring a banjo and play dueling banjos at the nightly staff meetings

In addition to all the sound comments listed as why the banjo should not be taken to encampment, I might add: Encampment is not band camp :)  You are there to focus on learning things to enhance your Cadet career in CAP and not on musical chords.

For such an advanced activity, one must have at LEAST a Senior level proficiency in the Musician Specialty Track.

For reference, see CAPF-846, January 2011 version                                       /s

I assume that you hold this rank.  If so, a couple of questions:

1) Are you "tooting your own horn" about attaining this rank?

2) Is the specialty rank insignia (hard or cloth), patch or badge available through Vanguard?? (now making this an uniform thread - LOL)

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
