Any advice you'd give to a cadet wanting to do either of those?
Remember your leadership lessons, and use them, but don't be too forthcoming as to their source. You'll come across as a smart-ass. Don't think that your "vast" experience in CAP makes you superior to your peers, especially during recruit training and tech school. Just do what you know how to do and do it well. Your efforts will usually be rewarded.

After CAP I enlisted in the US Army.
I choose to let them know that I had been through CAP and I ended up the Platoon leader for 4 of the 6 weeks of basic training. Paid off nicely for me because it put me miles ahead of the other recruits in learing so much of the "Basic" information you have to assimilate to become part of the military.
In my humble oppinion, you have got to learn to follow before you can lead.
I think the best officers come from the enlisted corps.
Being a Mustang is the only way to go.
