Nope, both times was mild weather.  I didn't have a choice, but I'm glad I was able to walk around and enjoy myself instead of having to put my survival skills I learned at Winter Hawk to use

I've been to Egypt 3 times, once, at the Pyrmids to see Opera Aida...

Cheney's daughters, Congressmen attend opera Aida in Cairo
Egypt, Local, 10/11/2002

The opening ceremony of the Aida 2002 staged on the Pyramids plateau was Thursday. The shows of the famous Opera, to run until October 13, are held in cooperation with the private sector for the first time.

Minister of Culture Farouq Hosni and a number of leading statesmen are scheduled to attend the show along with many Arab and foreign diplomats.

Russian Elina Zelinska will play the Prima Dona in the Opera whose orchestra will be conducted for the first time by Egyptian maestro Yasser Nader Abbas and will be directed by Adel Abdel Moneim kamel.

Abbas will be leading 110 musicians and 150 singers from the Opera House chorus in addition to the Italian Acabla chorus, according to Opera House chairman Samir Farag.

Verdi 's Aida has become one of the landmark Egyptian cultural events and has proved quite popular abroad as it attracts many tourists to Egypt, said Farag.

High-tech equipment and the latest techniques will be used in this spectacular show whose historical venue will add to its solemn and impressive impact, added Farag.

He said the stage has also been developed and the hydraulic background will be used to change the scenes.

Egyptian TV will air the show live on channel 2 and the Egyptian satellite channel in addition to a number of Arab and international TV stations, said the Opera House chairman.

Meanwhile, the shows will be attended by a number of dignitaries including Egypt's First Lady, World Bank president, Syrian Defence Minister Mustafa Tallas, Syrian Culture Minister Nagwa Qassab, US Vice President daughter, a number of Congressmen and 20 lords at British House of Common.

We rode in Ms. Cheney's motorcade with her from the hotel to the opera...  Fun stuff...  I was on the World Bank presidential detail.

A detail like Liz Cheney's, is done by Secret Service.  They handle everything themselves.  So to answer your question, no.

For private or contracted details, people are generally hired who have medical skills or they send folks to get medical training.  For instance, you can go to the Blackwater website where they're specifically hiring EMT-Is for contracts overseas.

I was on an atypical detail.  We were non-government working for a non-government organization that actually falls under the umbrella of the UN.  However, the president of the World Bank is appointed by the President of the United States.  The Diplomatic Security Service (DSS, from the State Dept) is obligated to assess the threat of the WB President and if necessary, provide protection.  They do have two options; one to provide the security themselves, or like in my case, bless an internal detail to do the work.  Through certification of DSS and with deputation from the US Marshals Service, we were hired by the World Bank and blessed by DSS to do the job. 

Our detail consisted of lots of quality, highly trained folks.  Former Army CID, Special Forces, Rangers, Intel types and the like.  We even hired General Meyers' detail leader after Meyers retired as CJCS.  He was simply an E-6 from Air Force Security Police who had been with Meyers for several years.  Experience you just can't get in a classroom.  We had a couple folks who were paramedics and everyone on the detail was at least an EMT-B.  We had our own medical section in the Bank with doctors and nurses.  We carried everything from an AED to O2, IVs and a few drugs.  If we were in a remote place like Cambodia or Ethiopia, we'd have a doctor with us.

Our detail was not the norm.  There are several gigs out there that may hire someone based solely on their medical skills, but most likely not.  It's kind of like in special operations where medics are "shooters first".  Medical skills are a secondary need.  If you do your job right, hopefully you won't need medical skills, however, sometimes everything you do isn't enough.

Qualification Guidelines:

Building Alignment, Enabling Team Effectiveness, Planning Proactively, Thinking Strategically, Establishing Direction and Implementing with Excellence are required skills for this position.

Minimum 3-5 years experience managing a protective services function. Competency gained through functional experience with protective services for a Federal agency or private protective company such as the United States Secret Service, State Department, or Army CID. Understanding of weapons and their capabilities. Must be able to perform duties wearing personal protective equipment.
