So this was suggested in another thread.  If the mods don't mind us using the CAPTalk name, I think it would be a great way for some of us to get out and motivate ourselves to shed off some pounds. (As I close up the bag of potato chips to go running).

I'm not sure, as soon as I get the okay from the Mods to use the CAPTalk name, I'll set up the group and post as to how to join and participate.

The only thing I don't like about it is that you can't compare yourselves directly to other individuals unless you're the group owner.  Then you can see everyone's results by name.  Otherwise you can just compare yourself to the average results of the other members.

CadetProgramGuy, I am waiting for one Admin to respond via PM.

As far as it is not copywritten, it's just in good form to ask.

Copyrights (not copywrites) are funny things - the laws are a bit more complex than you'd think, especially for electronic media.  I would think that the board owner has copyrights whether he knows it or not.  If he's smart, he'll make sure that he protects them.

One of the things that happened at my office when we did this was that the first time they looked at the numbers I was freakishly ahead of all the really fit people.  Why?  I'd been using it off and on for several years and had a ton of points already in the system.  Depending on how you do the comparison, if someone was already participating in the Challenge, then all the points they've earned in the past are still there and put them way ahead of everyone else.  You need to confine the comparison by date.

Busted my hump tearing off and replacing a roof today for 10.5 hrs. Shouldn't be up there quite as long tomorrow. My back is killing me, but hey, it racks up the points. If I get rejuvenated after supper I might go for a walk or bike ride - gotta stay ahead of my daughter!   ;D

Update on the ice cream shop...  my son found some trucks and played, but pushing the Jeep stroller up the huge hill burned off the small cookie dough ice cream I'm sure.

The unfortunate thing is that two of my students brought me a cake... luckily, my wife hid it and banned me from eating it until tomorrow.

Only problem is that those are two different kinds of calories. If I remember my freshman physics course correctly, the 6216 calories they lose by eating that dessert are real calories, the latent calories, though, are food Calories. 1 food Calorie equals 1 kilocalorie, or 1000 calories. So for the beer you take in 16 latent Calories, but only lose 1 Calorie. If only it could work that way.

EDIT:Just read the reply on there that explained it after writing my reply.

So how do you count a Ground Team Sortie through pricker bushes where you get harassed by a crazy lady and then dive bombed by a giant goose?

Yep... it was a good time.  I've had three missions this week.  I have to do the mileage, but 1 to Pittsburgh Area, 1 to State College, and 1 to Williamsport areas.  All are over 1 hour away.

Good times.

I just entered it as "hiking/backpacking". That's about as close as I could find. The crazy lady and goose were just added bonuses  ;D.

Yup, haven't bothered to weigh myself but my stationary bike speed is up 10-15 mph and distance is up quite a bit. And also calorie burn has doubled.

I really gotta get on there and update it. I've been moving into a new house the last 3 days (that's gonna be great for points.....dang sleeper sofa!) and doing a lot of running to take a physical abilities test next week.

Sleepers are easy; try a Decoro electronic rocker recliner sofa up three flights of stairs (says the professional furniture deliveryman).  Not that I'm complaining  ;)

The group has only been active since the end of May. We've got a couple of weeks yet for an awards. That being said I'm on track and have completed three of the six weeks. My point level is a little below average but since I do 48 hour shifts and there's no gym at station I con only do stretching, walking and lifting/ hauling there. Of course when you're lifting and hauling 100 kilogram patients with ventilators ...

I am nowhere near the Bronze Award (I think I'm at like 16%), but I did go for a hike in the woods with my family that was awesome.  I also just got an exercise ball that when I use it, I can actually do crunches without feeling like there is a knife in my back.

No matter the points, nor awards, this has been a motivator for me.

Yeah, this has definitely been a good motivator.  Biked into to work this morning, rode around during the day, biked to lunch and biked to the bus station to get home.  Golfed last night, and aiming to do some stuff this weekend.   It really helps keeping track like this.

I love the activity, but I can't find enough time in my week for 5 days a week. 2 or 3 has been my norm recently.  I'm riding my bike into work when the weather has cooperated, until I blew some tire on my way in Monday, replaced it, blew the new tire again on the way home.  Need to get the bike looked at - so there goes my way of working exercise into a day where I otherwise wouldn't have time.   :P

I burned myself out.  Too much weekend partying, not enough Starbucks in the mornings, and JAG is on from 7-9AM, and the DVR decides to only record half the time.  So my mornings are shot, I must eat lunch......and then by the time dinner rolls around I am too tired to do anything.

I didn't get in the Captalk group for the President's Challenge but I have been doing it this summer.  (Is it too late?) I'm working as an archaeologist for the State of Illinois this summer and walking through some awful terrain for 10 hours a day.  So it's easy for me to get my max of 750 points every day!

It's a great plan and I wish more Officers would do it.  Or are we back to calling us Senior Members?

Never to late to join us.  After you get registered, you can back date 14 days of activity.

We've never officially not been Senior Members. That advisory letter was intended primarily for external communications, and since HHMNBN is outta here, I think it's largely gone by the wayside.

So one of the major problems we face often is hydration.  This extends to exercise, and I hate all forms of getting water that I have had thus far (water bottle, glass, peon...)  However, I just found this Camelbak Better Bottle (http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2008/01/23/camelbak-better-bott.html).  These bottles have the same bite valve as the Camelbak bladders.  Plus they are pressure equalized so no nasty splashback.

I have been drinking a ton more since getting this bottle!

Okay, so two chiropractor visits and my back is feeling a lot better.  I'm down another two pounds for a total of 8 pounds total loss since the start of this.

LOL  Actually, I'm an archaeologist.  I work for the State of Illinois.  We're currently doing a phase I pedestrian survey for the proposed Route 30 project, collecting surface artifacts and mapping historical and prehistoric sites for excavation ahead of construction.  We've found some interesting things.  Long, hot and dirty days in crappy terrain and crappy weather.  Kinda feels like I'm back on active duty!

^That's cool.  We flew into one of our local airports one time, and the end of the runway was all dug up.  It turns out they were trying to expand the runway, but the archaeological survey found an old Indian village right where they were going to expand.

I don't know if they actually expanded it or not.

Actually, I can almost guarantee that the construction would go through.  Archaeologists will remove and document everything as best as possible and construction will then proceed.  Even with a site as historically significant as this one:  http://www.archaeology.org/0707/abstracts/istanbul.html  The show must go on.

It's great when a site is able to be preserved, but unfortunately there is usually no money to preserve or maintain sites and little money to be made from it.  And if we were to preserve every native American site here in the states, it would leave us precious little room to grow.
