I'm looking for a program that will tag photos per 1AF standards. I'm looking for one that will accept .gpx or .kml as the input track. Multiple programs were mentioned at the GLR/ES conference but I failed to write them down.

Last night I got a hold of a free WinMo app that will create tracks and even display them on a previously, or on the fly downloaded map and another app that will take the track and output a .kml file which I'm told Google maps mobile will read as well as Google Earth on the PC.

He offers some deal to members, Can't remember off hand what it was but mention CAP when you purchase.

That's pretty nice and I will look into that. That actually wasn't one of the programs mentioned at the conference. I want to try multiple options out before I settle on one.

Interestingly enough there was a message from the GLR Director of Ops specifically stating we should be using that exact program a few months ago.

I'm sure they want you to use the well intentioned "program" from out west.  Or some other not so intuitive software.

I've been using robogeo for about 3-4 years, with great results.  It's incredibly robust, and has some really nice functional features.

I emailed him about that and he said he doesn't offer a discount to anyone.

our wing uses ARGUS and has been much easier to use than robogeo (IMHO).  Photos are displayed on a map with each photo depicted in the location it was taken.  You can enter lat/long manually in the system or upload it from a GPS plotter.

How can I get a hold of that?

Not really. From what I heard at the ES conference most people are trying to reinvent the wheel. This is something that should be steered at the national level.

NHQ tried that and it was a basic no flair option. Which for most customers is not acceptable.

A robust outsourced software contract should be very easy to leverage.  Robogeo, argus, whatever.  pick one and don't have the conversation again for a few years minimum.

Then they failed. They should be supplying it to us whether they roll their own or buy seats form third parties the process should be the same throughout.

There was an idiot proof, fully automated sloution that was proposed to national that would cost NOTHING! The state of Florida, FEMA, and the Florida National Guard went crazy over the product...they were in love.   National turned it down...

its not a perfect solution, but check out the SPOT rescue beacon site

This system time links pictures and GPS positions.  could be used for ground teams or air crew.

Why the heck would NHQ do that? That's too good to pass up IMHO unless there were security vulnerabilities but if the state agencies and NG were going to use it why not?

You guys are free to use it....were trying to find a new server for it.  The server we had isnt available anymore.  When we find a new home to host it ill post a link.

Any camera with a GPS  ie   Standard CAP issue D200, or any camera that automatically geocodes the image will work by simply FTP'ing the files to the server.

If you dont have an onboard GPS you can use any non tethered GPS, just sync the times.  When you get on the ground you plug in your GPS to the PC, put the images in a folder....2 mouse clicks later your photos are on the way to the server.

The images get placed on a google maps mashup, completely watermarked and all.

Best of all they are entered into a SQL database so you can index them and search.

Its the...'We didnt think if it, so were not going to use it' attitude.

I can think of plenty of programs, technology, and software, that one group loves and defines as "perfect" when in fact they are kludgey, personality-based, or simply don't meet the need in the eyes of the person who is empowered with the decision.

As an example, any platform or tool adopted these days which is not web-based and OS agnostic is a poor choice.

And thus perhaps one reason it wasn't adopted - it requires hosting somewhere, which is not "free".  That doesn't mean its not a useful
tool, but bandwidth, hosting, and administration for a tool that is to be used nationally is not a small proposition.

The "best" solution for this is likely something tied to WMIRS that does the tagging as part of the upload.
