Title: Nikon D200 Camera w/GPS
Post by: Auxpilot on August 21, 2008, 07:24:51 PM
Our Squadron just purchased a Nikon D200 digital SLR w/GPS that connects directly to the flash shoe on the camera.
The GPS is called a Geomet'r and it is a real interface to the camera, not one of the jury rigged units that time stamp the photo and match the time with a GPS logger.

Macsense Geomet'r:  http://www.macsense.com/Product/peripheral/gnc-35.htm

The GPS comes with a neat software package that creates a Jpeg file containing the photo, a Google map of the location, the GPS data and UTC time taken, and any user notes.

We will be taking it out for a test drive this weekend. We'll let you know how it works out.

Nice, let us know how it goes.  I've got a juri rigged system to geotag my images, but integrated is the way to go.

Also take a look at the Nikon Coolpix P6000

Has a built-in GPS tagging system.

The new 3G iPhone also geotags its photos.  It can also email them.  :)

So we took the Nikon D200 up on a mission this weekend. All I can say is the photos were outstanding.

Being able to shoot with shutter speeds in excess of 1,000th gives you some pretty clear shots. We set the ISO speed at 800 and used a 55-200 lens.

The lat/lon tags were right on target and matched the GX55 marks that we recorded exactly.

Although pricey, I would highly recommend this camera to other CAP units. I know that the Texas Wing has purchased the D200 as well.

We financed ours with corporate donations.

Question - does that tag the position of the camera, or the object you are shooting?

It tags the position of the camera.

If you are shooting something far away, you would have to shoot the photos then fly over the subject and do a straight down shot to be 100% accurate.
