Title: NBB Short List??
Post by: ChamorroPride on December 10, 2017, 08:01:13 PM
Afternoon, all,
So I applied for NBB on 1 December I believe, or whenever the Summer NCSA registration started, and I completed all the requirements before then, but I'm not on the Short List? I'm not like upset or anything, but I'm just curious onto how the Short List thing works. Help appreciated! Thanks everyone!

How tall are you?
5 foot 7. I thought I was short enough to make it but apparently there are a lot of tiny people in CAP.

Nothing happens until April, and the "short list" is for alternates.

That tends to happen when the age starts at 12

I'm for the record, I'm 5'4.

I'm 5'7'' and I was on the short list, so you don't have to worry about being too tall.

But actually though, if you have all of your quals and if you're not selected to be a primary, a lot of people from the short list end up going to beret. I was an alternate, but I made sure that I had everything for my quals and ended up being slotted for blue beret (which was amazing and definitely one of the best experiences I've had in CAP).

I also got put as alternate for NBB. I have all my qualifications done and registered on time before January 15th. I understand why I'm not primary because I haven't been in CAP too long(little over a year) but my problem is understanding exactly how the short list and such works. It says Cadets who have responded, I was guessing they picked cadets who had all their stuff done and moved them up into the short list so they would be the first to replace dropped out primaries. BUT some people on the short list are incompleted or are missing quals... This is where I get confused and I'm worried I don't even have a chance of being primary or whatever at this point... even though I have everything done... AND it also says people who have quals move up the list... yet people without quals done are moving up... It's just confusing... Can anybody shed some more in-depth light on this for me?

Thank you,

1. Maybe the coffee is why  you're 5'4"?
2. I feel like a giant at 6'

First off, thank you for applying to NBB, what I personally think is the best all-around NCSA, though I am biased. Like the majority of cadets who apply for NBB, you were slotted as an alternate. You say that you have all of your prerequisites done, that's great because that will put you on the short list found at http://nbb.cap.gov/quals-status.html. As you mentioned, the alternate list is comprised of cadets who may or may not have completed all prerequisites as the primary determining factor is whether or not they have responded to the email that went out asking if they still wanted to be considered. The Short List is specifically the portion of alternates that have all prerequisites completed.

As I understand it, alternates who have responded get put on the short list as they get ALL prerequisites completed; in other words, if you're an alternate who doesn't have all prerequisites complete, get them done quickly and you will end up higher on the Short List. From there, alternates are chosen from the Short List as primaries drop out are fail to meet deadlines (payments, qual completion, etc.). When an alternate is offered a slot, they are given one chance; if you turn it down or fail to respond in a timely manner, then they go down to the next person on the list.

Also keep in mind, the Short List and alternate slotting is handled by ONE very dedicated senior member, so be patient and responsive.

I ended up finding that email deep in my messages. A few days later I got put on the short list. I see they have started slotting cadets in the alternates... Hopefully they'll get to my name.
