Title: Non locking thread- hopefully.
Post by: RogueLeader on April 02, 2007, 08:22:30 PM
Here's a thread that can flow and change as the conversation goes.  Just don't say anything you would be embarassed about if posts are questionable.
So,
Star Wars is better than Star Trek.

I agree.  Star Trek is corny.

Isn't that how all of our threads go?

It depends on your criteria for better. Of course, special effects of Star Wars wins hands down.  Quality of acting is better in SW as well.  The SW story is an epic tale that evolves with a final. Star Trek was a series of independent episodes that were not connected together.

But I agree that the Star Wars series is better.

But there is no "topic" to stay centerd on.  This could go on for 200 pages and yet cover 20 or 30 different topic, and guess what: I don't care one bit.
Now, to continue debate,
it was due to Star Wars that TNG of Star Trek looked as it did.  It was ILM the did all or most of the special effects.

Treky to the core......................................

I don't care for Classic Trek, however, I really enjoy TNG, DS9 and Voyager.  I wish they hadn't cancelled Enterprise.  It was just getting good!!!!

I love Star Wars and Star Trek both, Star Wars a little more.

But what about the new Battlestar Galactica, I mean holy crap it is awesome. Seriously I can not wait for Jan 2008 for the next season.

Honestly, Star Trek (ST:TOS) and Star Wars (all parts) are not a real fair comparison.  They existed in different times, one began as a late 1960s Network TV series the other as a 1970s Theatrical Movie.

I think it is possible to love them both for what they are...

Star Wars is epic...Star Trek is allegorical

Star Trek is the Fantasy of the Future...Star Wars is the Fantasy of Long ago and Far away.

Star Wars was planned...Star Trek evolved from fragments

Star Trek is "wagon train to the stars," Star Wars is "Shakespeare to the stars."

Star Wars is a tale about a young man in the desert that rises to rival an Empire (almost Biblical), Star Trek is a about a young Starship Captain who lives for duty and booty.

I say love them both for what they are...

At least the Sci-Fi Channel knows better than to cancel BSG...unlike some of my other favorite shows.

Space: Above and Beyond - Cancelled
Farscape - Cancelled
Babylon 5 (and it's spin off)- Cancelled
Firefly - Cancelled
The Lone Gunmen - Cancelled
Tru Calling - Cancelled
Ultraviolet - Cancelled
Invasion - Cancelled
Earth 2 - Cancelled
Blade - Cancelled
Birds of Prey - Cancelled
Highlander - Cancelled
MST3K - Cancelled
Quantum Leap - Cancelled

There are lots more, especially if you add in Anime, but all I can really say now is:  Gods bless the creator of the DVR!!

Fundamental differences between Star Trek and Star Wars:

Star Trek = mix of Horatio Hornblower and Wagon Train with a smidge of Roddeberry's beliefs regarding secular humanism.

Star Wars = Joseph Campbell's Hero Of A Thousand Faces with a dollop here and there of Kurosawa's works.

I've been a Star Wars fan since the original came out. I've been a Star Trek fan since I watched TOS reruns as a wee lad.  For me it's not a question of 'better' but 'different, like drinking both Coke or Pepsi depending on availability, mood and what goes better with what.

As far as Star Trek goes, I liked TOS and the TOS-crew movies. It took me three years to warm up to TNG, and even then it's luke warm for me. I liked DS9, didn't like Voyager and utterly hated Enterprise...

I liked the original BSG and expected not to like the 'reimagined' BSG - boy, was I wrong! Gonna be a long year before the Pegasus-flashback episodes air before the debut of Season 4 next January.

I've been known to go to fan-run scifi cons here and there from time to time and used to do a little side work for a long-defunct con promoter.

As a whole, sort of. In particular, I liked it when it got a bit darker as the series progressed.

IMHO, it beat 'are we there yet?' Voyager and 'to hell with quality, give us ratings!' Enterprise hands-down.

It has, however, been theorized that the destruction of Death Star II would have killed off the Ewoks - more here:

George Lucas is a fine film maker...however, the part about Star Wars that sends me over the edge is the gosh awful writing of the dialog!  Strictly amateur, and consistently bad through each movie.

Star Trek, on the other hand, in all it's television multiple-personalities has always been character driven.  Yes the special effects come across as second rate compared to Star Wars, yet the complexity of the characters, their dialog, and the story plots are FAR superior!  I'll take character driven stories over state of the art special effects every time.

Seriously (if one can be so on this thread), if I had to pick between Star Wars and Star Trek I vote for Star Trek and it's spinoffs.  Star Wars would have fared better in my mind if they would have had a 7 of 9!   ;D

Hey, what about Space 1999?  Anyone remember that gem?

Space: 1999 was supposed to be the second season of "UFO" but, for reasons too vast and divergent to get into here, it was transformed into a different series.  UFO had been a success in both Britain and the States, but there were apparently some contract difficulties with the actors -- that and the fact that two or three years elapsed between filming seasons, the actors had gone on to other things and couldn't come back if the contracts weren't a problem.  So Gerry and Sylvia Anderson re-tooled the second UFO season and created Space: 1999.  To me, UFO was the far better series.

But to get back to the original question -- Star Trek all the way!!!  I watched the first broadcast of Trek in September of 1966, live in black and white at home in Chicago.  (I was eight.)  It hooked me that night and I've loved Trek ever since.  (I'm not the biggest fan of TNG, DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise, though.)

Classic series from the '60s that became a '70s gem in the States!  I loved that show and even "joined" SHADO (the fan club, not the alien-hunting organization).  I've actually served under officers who were like Commander Straker -- cold, distant, committed to only the mission, not much of a hint of humanity.  Go back and watch the series and see how much that dedication cost Straker in his personal life.  Wow.

Does anyone remember a British Sci-fi show from the '70's that revolved around what happened following an explosion on the moon?  I believe that the explosion sent the moon out of earth orbit, yet there remained a "functional" moon base, staffed with survivors trying to figure out how to continue surviving?

Does anyone else remember this show?  Or, am I having hallucinations?

I am devoted to all things Trek, since Season One TOS.

ST & SW are different genres, and I enjoyed the first SW story arc (Episodes 4-5-6).

I was not drawn to the theater for SW 1-2-3, because I thought a 'prequel' when you knew the ultimate fate of the prime character was somewhat silly...Anakim Skywalker/Darth Vader was simply not that compelling a character, more a 2 dimensional bad guy......finally watched it on cable recently, the films confirmed my opinion.

Has anyone seen the video of Leonard Nimoy singing "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins?"

http://www.tolkiencollector.com/bilbobal.htm   You'll need Quick-Time to view it.

Totally hysterical.  He's on some "Shindig" style TV show, sporting the Spock haircut (it was filmed summer of '67, at that time they were shooting season 2 of ST-TOS) Blazer Jacket w/Turtleneck, Chinos and Beatle-boots...and the go-go dancers, groovy baby, yeah!  It's even better than Spock jamming on his Vulcan harp with the space hippies (remember that episode?)  It's just another reason why "I grock Spock!"

Anyone remember "Space: Above & Beyond?"  I thought it was pretty good.  Ran for one season on ABC in 1995, then Sci-Fi Channel ran it in '99.  Space Marines on the Space Carrier Ticonderoga fighting the "Chigs." It was Vic Morrow's "Combat" (wow, that goes waaaay back!) and "Black Sheep Squadron" all rolled into one, albeit in outer space.  It was a lot like the new BSG, dark and edgy.  They were selling the Cockpit set for the "hammerhead" fighter on ebay not too long ago, asking price was $11K.

Honestly, I think you are all totally missing the boat here: I love Science-Fiction, but if this is a non-locking, no-holds-barred thread, let's put it all on the line and let it loose.

drum roll, please.......

Great show, IMHO.

There was supposed to be a "UFO II" made in the '90s that never quite went anywhere; buzz emerged in '02 or '03 about another attempt, but that never went anywhere either.

Any attempt at a revival involving original cast is complicated by the fact that a few of the lead actors passed away several years ago.

S:AaB was killed over money and internal politics at the network; money that would have gone towards production was instead siphoned off to meet demands by the creator of the X Files, which was then Fox's 800lb gorilla.

Very true.  We've lost the actors who played Commander Straker and Colonel Foster, as well as General Henderson (who died just weeks after the show wrapped production -- he was ill with cancer during the season).

That being said, if you were casting a new UFO, who would you put in the key roles?

The rest ... in order of my preference ... Sergio Mendez and Brasil 66 ... The Carpenters ... Herman's Hermits ... the Buckinghams.

Your mileage may vary, but I do love trumpet music.

drum roll, please…….

The REAL burning question of television in the 1970’s was: Who was hotter: Marcia Brady, or Laurie Partridge???

Laurie Partridge got my vote back then

For me, it's always been ... Marcia Marcia MARCIA!!!!!

My brother is getting married in December and we are getting our band back together.   We used to have a group called "The Fabulous Carrales Showband."  Being that most members of my family are musicians in different genres, we united with some friends and learned a few songs for public performance in 2003.

At our first gig we passed around a jar and asked that first audience for its favorite selections...  we got everything from Ray Price to the Beatles to Herb Alpert to Tejano/Spanish music...Johnny Cash...Buddy Clark...Limp Bisket...you name it.

We actually took out lots of those songs...

A typical gig was...

Amor de Mi Music (original song by me)

Tijuana Taxi

All my Lovin

Sleepwalker

Linda

Las Nubes

Samba pa ti

This Guy's In love with You

For the Good Times

Don't you care

Early in 2004 our guitarist joined US Customs and moved too far away to play...we were parked.  But, my brother's wedding resurrecteht the band!!!

Ah, a voice from the other side of the generation gap  ;)

Okay, quick explanation for someone born >1970:

Herb Alpert-have you ever seen "Shrek" when the evil magic mirror is doing the "dating game" scene? listen to the background music, nice and brassy.

Sergio Medes & Brasil '66- "Austin Powers" (the first one) when Austin is running around Las Vegas, the song in the background is a bossa nova called "Mas que nada."  I think they also play "The look of love,"  inspired by groovy chicks with miniskirts, go-go boots, and big false eyelashes.  Look up the movie "Valley of the Dolls" in a search engine, look at the girls, you'll get the idea...

Baja Marimba Band-  More Austin Powers-type muzak.

Buckinghams- American Band trying to capitalize on the Beatles and the British Invasion, on hit that I remember was "Kind of a drag"

Herman's Hermits - Lead singer, Peter Noone appeared recently as a judge on "American Idol," sang the song "Something Good" which was also featured on one of the "Naked Gun" Leslie Neilsen movies

Carpenters - Early '70's brother & sister Act, featuring Karen Carpenter - They started off as singers in the street shows in Disneyland, Beautiful "layered" multi-tracked harmonies, like Phil Spectors "Walls of Sound" music of the mid 60's.  Most memorable song was "Sing" that was featured on Sesame Street.  Karen died from anorexia some years ago.

Goodness...I feel at home now.   Born in Dec '75, joined as a Cadet in '92, graduated high school in '94, turned SM at 21 in '97 (stupidly let my membership lapse in '98), graduated from college in '99,  and after three job related relocations, rejoined CAP in '06.

Yeah had me fooled too, considering he started this whole retro-music subject.

This Star Trek vs. Star Wars thing bled over to my work, and someone mentioned something from way back:

Anyone remember 'The Starlost?'  It was a pretty cool show produced in Canada that aired in the U.S. '73-74 and later went into syndication in the early '80s.

The premise was . . . . now  get this. . . . Amish in space (no kidding!)  They made it work, though:  the story opens with a bunch of folks stuck in the 19th century in a place called Cypress Corners and a young too-inquisitive upstart one day discovers that Earth was destroyed, and that Cypress Corners is actually a bio-dome of a thousand year-old, 200 mile-long space-ark on a voyage to a new habitable world.  Needless to say, living in a spaceship goes against the grain of Amish culture, and this revelation could potentially upset the order of things, so (of course) he is banished by the elders.

Then he and a couple of companions find out that the bridge of the Ark was destroyed, the crew killed.  It's been on auto-pilot for 500 years, and is a couple of years from its new-earth destination, and someone needs to prep for arrival, so they have to find the auxiliary control room.  The space-ark has a population of hundreds of thousands of people living in dozens of huge bio-domes, each with a different culture . . . . and the potential for new weekly episodes.

There is quite a connection to other Sci-Fi shows & movies.  The Space-Ark created for the series was recycled for the film "Silent Running."  The star of the series, Kier Dullea played Dave Bowman in '2001, A Space Odyssey,' and '2010: Odyssey Two.'  Walter Koenig (ST's Checkhov) guest stars as a villain, John Colicos (Klingon Kor for ST-TOS and ST-DS9 **AND** Baltar on the original BSG) and Barry Morse (Prof. Bergman from Space:1999) also make appearances.  Creator Harlan Ellison wrote the screenplay to the ST-TOS episode "City on the Edge of Forever" (it was the first time-travel story for ST) as well as some work in Babyon 5. He's given some creative credit for "Terminator" after suing James Cameron for allegedly plagiarizing the concept from a couple of his works.

Ellison got into a big feud with the producers, and the show never made it past the fist season.  It really had a lot of great potential.  Maybe someday someone will do a remake. . . .

Since I have a direct line genealogy back to the royal line of Clan Stuart I can wear it with out any fear of offending any one in Scotland. :P

Lazenby DID wear one for OHMSS: check it out.

Connery is the only real Scot (true to Fleming's character, whos father was a Scot and Mother Swiss.)  He was THE Bond.

Brosnan (a close second as Bonds go) is Irish

Lazenby is Australian

Dalton is Welsh

Moore and Craig are English

I loved JAG!  Even when it was more soap-opera than military-lawyer, it was good!  The cast had perfect interaction with each other.  When John M. Jackson (Admiral Chegwidden) left the cast and was replaced by the Marine General, it seemed that tension among cast members increased -- of course, that could also have had a lot to do with all of them knowing it was the last season.  CBS couldn't afford the raises David James Elliott and Catherine Bell would have demanded to continue the series, and Donald Bellisario was more involved with NCIS than JAG at that point anyway.

And yes, I know I should be wearing the buttons-n-chain.  Sigh ... this is why I'm seeking a larger mess dress jacket.  Still ... it looked good.

I like the unit,  even if half the episodes are total crap, some of them are good. It's on during my meeting though, so I have to wait till later & watch it online, which is nice to since I can save it till there's nothing on TV. "Like the boar, the mare, the cat and even the wolf were also ancient pagan symbols of superhuman power perpetuated by the Celts.  The origins and early affinities of many of today's clans can be seen in their clan badges: the dominant clan amongst the Children of the Cat were the Mackintoshes whose motto is "Touch not the cat bot a glove" (touch not the cat without a glove) and no less than four other clans share that motto — Chattan, Gow, MacBain and MacPherson."

My mom's side comes from Ireland with the last name of Farley.  The Irish language version of this name Ó Faircheallaigh, meaning "extremely warlike".

My dad's side is of German decent.  In fact, I'm the first "Bowden" born in the states from my dad's side.  My dad was born in Berlin in 1941 and didn't come to the states until he was 9 or 10.

Col. Jack, we should end all these silly arguments about patches and flags, TPU's etc. The only real uniform argument in CAP is: Why have they violated our civil and religious rights by not including the kilt in the 39-1?

Personally, I think that as reform Druids, we should be able to wear the kilt as religious attire, like a Scottish Yamaka....

I found out today that the State of California has a tartan! ( John Muir's family tartan)

I also heard about some kind of Clan in Maxwell, Alabama. They play really dangerous games by adding a burning cross piece to the Caber toss, and wear all white kilts!

The historic reason for the white kilts for the Alabama clan is to contrast with the black van used as a symbol of Bonnie Prince Charlie. The white kilt is worn with a double breasted blue jacket with blue epaulets, often with metal insignia.

See, I knew you were a person of sense, integrity, and purpose, Captain Lord.  I just knew it.

I too have heard of this Clan in the Alabama area ... though, with typical (?) lack of education, they spell it with a "k" ... and their odd ways.  My sixth sense says steer clear of them, as they're of the ilk that also display predominately red necks, beer bellies, and missing teeth along with their white kilts.

As for wearing the kilt as religious attire ... you mean you don't already???   ;)  I wear mine as often as I can, and even (in another thread) have stated that if I had a personalized Georgia license plate, it would read, "KILTED".

Way before Ellis Island, we were O'Rothláins before we were Rowleys.

The banner should read 'ventus secundis' = 'with favorable winds'; quite appropriate given a long family history of sailing.

My personal arms are a bit obvious to those who know me personally  :D

Aye, from Counties Down and Antrim.  Several families left Ireland post-famine in the 1850s and 1860s and settled in Stark County, Illinois.  The ones related to me left there for Nebraska but finally settled near Pacific Junction, Iowa.  Anything sound familiar?

Well, I am taking over CAP by coup.  A number of people here are on the team, so they will likely get promotions and appropriate positions.  My dude for professional development is Kach...my Chief of Donuts is mikeylikey...my black van driver is, well I can't tell that, can I?  MIKE will be the GAWG commander (just because it's far away and I like to throw people off).  As far as paid staff, I dunno...I'll have them keep Curt Lafond and I'll take suggestions on the people I don't know well.  I will need someone to volunteer to make sure that the Pluto patch is sufficiently destroyed.     Also, I will need someone to manage Vanguard affairs...I prefer someone with extensive knowledge of, and access to, large weapons.  Mikeylikey will assist with that, but I will need some air people and some mean-looking people too.

We will have to use caution as not to mess up orders shipped (apparently they ship one or two per 100 now), or destroy our inventory.

So what happens when TP decided to go into exile in CUBA and then attack you with his Air Force?

Did I say that I was going to overthrow TP?  Even if that WERE my plan, I wouldn't disclose it.  I have the pocket edition of the Art of War, you know.   >:D

Hey, since I'min Vegas can I be the Vice Commander?

As long as what ever you do stays in Vegas

Actual full contact "real" jousting is a great sport.

Can't you give it a rest? If this one gets locked, that will be three in one day that you are directly responsible for.

Want in one hand and poop in the other one, and see which one gets full first!

Actually, Im pretty sure that the American Flag is an American thing. I wear one on my EMS uniforms and m wildfire helmet, my fire fighter friends wear them on their helmets and work uniforms, my LEO father wore one for 37 years on his uniform and sleeve and there is one flying in my front yard. Im pretty sure my house isnt an Army base. Get over it, kiddo.

Then please explain to me why the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard don't wear the American flag on their BDUs.  I believe it's because the uniform it patriotic enough without the American flag.  The only reason the Army wears the American flag on the BDU is because of tactical reasons.  CAP has no tactical reason to wear the American flag patch on the BDU.

Wearing the American flag on a BDU that represents both the Air Force and CAP is like wearing an American flag pin on the blues.  It's patriotic, but not proper.  The uniform itself is patriotic enough.

Also, SARMedTech, your argument about police and firefighters and EMTs wearing the American flag patch holds no water because CAP is not the auxiliary of the any police dept, fire dept, or EMT dept.  CAP is the auxiliary of the USAF, and the USAF does not wear the American flag on the BDU.

Finally, with "U.S. Civil Air Patrol" on the branch tape, there's no reason to wear the American flag patch on the CAP BDU.  The "U.S." does a good enough job identifying the wearer as American.

I really think that we have beat this dead horse long enough.  It is a regulation.  If it really bothers you that much, rejoin and submit a proposal up the Chain of Command.  I'm fairly sure that most of us are sick and tired of hearing of it.
As a counter to your view, I think that we should have flags on BOTH shoulders.  I felt this way BEFORE Flags were required.

Youre not even in the organization yet. Join up and then start sending your complaints up the chain. The AF doesnt wear ultramarine tapes either, but we do. To my knowledge, no other branch of the service wear ultramarine tapes, but we do. Get over it.

Why no, LT, I will not have the privilege of attending encampment. Will you be going and if so in what capacity?  ;D

Sorry no, my change in life precludes me from attending.  I do, however look foreward to participating in the future.

Youre not even in the organization yet. Join up and then start sending your complaints up the chain. The AF doesnt wear ultramarine tapes either, but we do. To my knowledge, no other branch of the service wear ultramarine tapes, but we do. Get over it.

That's not what I was referring to.  You need to go back and read what was written.

All I want for Christmas is for CAP to be called "Civil Air Patrol", not "U.S. Civil Air Patrol" and for the American flag patch to not be worn on the BDU for CAP because that's an Army thing and CAP isin't the auxiliary of the Army.

Maledicat Dominus; vade retro  Listen up, "One note Charlie" give it a rest.  vade retro

God Curse him? Get behind?

Capt. Lord

No, its an Army thing. We are referencing the military services since thats what CAP is supposed to be an auxillary of. We are not talking about civilian organizations like EMS, fire or police.

As far as the military is concerned, the Army is the ONLY serivce thatwears a American flag in the CONUS. The Air Force does not so I am inclined to agree that we should not do this practice.

We did, the subject is long over. DROP IT!!!! MOVE ON!!! If you can't, kindly refrain from posting on this thread. We are TIRED of talking about it.  Your opinion is known, you have nothing more to explain on it or you would have already.  IF you want it to change NOW-- rejoin and send a petition up the Chain of Command, IF you chose not to, let it drop and be done with it.

Here's a thread that can flow and change as the conversation goes.  Just don't say anything you would be embarassed about if posts are questionable.

Sorry Rogue, even though I generally support the wishes of the thread starter in regards to thread drift, you dug your own grave when you opened with the above.

True, but there comes a point when a topic is soooo dead that only GOD himself can revive it.  The American Patch is one of those topics that has reached that point.  I also feel that there is a chance that the continued spread of that topic into this thread will cause it to close.  That is the ONE thing that I do not want to happen, and if I have to admonish a person to do so, I will.  If you notice, I did so in a polite, yet firm way, here and other places to drop it.  He hasn't so I feel the need to be more firm.

Not to mention the conversation had moved away, he reintroduced a topic, it didn't drift there.  There is no connection between the encampment conversation and the Flags.

So what is an encampment like? I've been involved in BSA for a while, anything like scout camp, or is it more like boot camp, or half way between?

Either way, if it involves mountains, forests, campfires and tents, I'm all over it.

doc wonders to himself: do they have one like Arkansas where if a man & wife get a divorce that they are still considered brother & sister. hmmmm....

Off topic question sparked by hte flags in the colgan shot...

I know AF has blue for Officer Flags and the Army Red. But what about the others?

Second question: Is it just General Officers/Admirals or do Bird Colonels/Captains get a flag too?

I don't think there is a topic...that's the point.    :)

I think it's just generals and admirals who get their own flag.

P.S.
If those pictures ever surface of me with General Bowling's flag after some capture-the-flag action, it sooo wasn't me.   ;)

Yes they get a flag.  On their car if they wanted.  It has been replaced with the little rank sticker next to the DoD Car Decals though.  You may see some front license plates with the bird on it as well.

AF and Navy have blue GO/FO flags.  Army and Marines use red ones.

Technically, no - they don't rate a flag.  Hence why the Navy calls Admirals "Flag Officers".  However, you will see silver birds on blue or red plates on vehicles of O-6's.

Recently I was given a list of actual responses made to squawks, the Air Force term for maintenance complaints by pilots.

Problem: "Left inside main tire almost needs replacement."
Solution: "Almost replaced left inside main tire."

Problem: "Test flight OK, except autoland very rough."
Solution: "Autoland not installed on this aircraft."

Problem: "The autopilot doesn't."
Signed off: "IT DOES NOW."

Problem: "Something loose in cockpit."
Solution: "Something tightened in cockpit."

Problem: "Evidence of hydraulic leak on right main landing gear."
Solution: "Evidence removed."

Problem: "Number three engine missing."
Solution: "Engine found on right wing after brief search."

Problem: "DME volume unbelievably loud."
Solution: "Volume set to more believable level."

Problem: "Dead bugs on windshield."
Solution: "Live bugs on order."

Problem: "Autopilot in altitude hold mode produces a 200 fpm descent."
Solution: "Cannot reproduce problem on ground."

Problem: "IFF inoperative."
Solution: "IFF inoperative in OFF mode."

Problem: "Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick."
Solution: "That's what they're there for."

Fitness Reps

The British Military writes EPRs which are officer fitness reports. The form used for Royal Navy and Marines fitness reports is the S206. The following are actual excerpts taken from people's "206s"....

- His men would follow him anywhere, but only out of curiosity.

- I would not breed from this Officer.

- This Officer is really not so much of a has-been, but more of a definitely won't-be.

- When she opens her mouth, it seems that this is only to change whichever foot was previously in there.

- He has carried out each and every one of his duties to his entire satisfaction.

- He would be out of his depth in a car park puddle.

- Technically sound, but socially impossible.

- This Officer reminds me very much of a gyroscope

- Always spinning around at a frantic pace, but not really going anywhere.

- This young lady has delusions of adequacy.

- When he joined my ship, this Officer was something of a granny; since then he has aged considerably.

- This Medical Officer has used my ship to carry his genitals from port to port, and my officers to carry him from bar to bar.

- Since my last report he has reached rock bottom, and has started to dig.

- She sets low personal standards and then consistently fails to achieve them.

- He has the wisdom of youth, and the energy of old age.

- This Officer should go far - and the sooner he starts, the better.

- In my opinion this pilot should not be authorized to fly below 250 feet.

- This man is depriving a village somewhere of an idiot.

- The only ship I would recommend this man for is citizenship.

- Works well when under constant supervision and cornered like a rat in a trap.

Which Service is Best?

A soldier, a sailor, an airman, and a marine get into an argument about
what armed force is the best. The argument gets so heated that they fail
to see an on-coming truck. They are hit and killed instantly. When they
arrive in heaven, they see Saint Peter at the Pearly Gates. So they
decide he can settle their argument. They walk up and ask him, "Saint
Peter, what Military Service is the best?" He thinks for a moment, then
says, "Well, I'm afraid I can't tell you. But I'll tell you what. I'll
talk to God next time I see Him, and I'll find out for you. In the mean
time, welcome to heaven." So they enter. Later, they see Saint Peter
while walking around, and they ask him about their question. But before
Saint Peter can say anything, trumpets blare, a bright light shines, and
a white dove flies out of the light with an envelope in it's beak. Saint
Peter says, "Ah, here's the answer from the Boss." He takes the letter,
and the dove flies off. He opens it, trumpets play, gold dust flies up,
and Saint Peter reads aloud:

FROM THE DESK OF GOD

TO: SOLDIERS, SAILORS, AIRMEN, AND MARINES

RE: WHICH SERVICE IS BEST.

Dear Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines,
All branches of the United States Armed forces are truly honorable.
One should take pride in serving with the Military. You are all
well-trained men, all capable of pulling off your job exceedingly well.
Therefore, there is no superior service.

Sincerely,
God, US Air Force (Ret)

Rangers vs SF

The Chief of Staff of the Army asked his Sergeant Major, who was both Ranger and Special Forces qualified, which organization he would recommend to form a new anti-terrorist unit. The Sergeant Major responded to the General's question with this parable: If there were a hijacked Boeing 747 being held by terrorists along with its passengers and crew and an anti-terrorist unit formed either by the Rangers or the Special Forces was given a Rescue/Recovery Mission; what would you expect to happen?

Ranger Option

Forces/Equipment Committed: If the Rangers went in, they would send a Ranger company of 120 men with standard army issue equipment.

Mission Preparation: The Ranger Company First Sergeant would conduct a Hair Cut and Boots Inspection.

Infiltration Technique: They would insist on double timing, in company formation, wearing their combat equipment, and singing Jody cadence all the way to the site of the hijacked aircraft.

Actions in the Objective Area: Once they arrived, the Ranger company would establish their ORP, put out security elements, conduct a leaders recon, reapply their face cammo, and conduct final preparations for Actions on the OBJ.

Results of Operation: The Rescue/Recovery Operation would be completed within one hour; all of the terrorists and most of the passengers would have been killed, the Rangers would have sustained light casualties and the 747 would be worthless to anyone except a scrap dealer.

Special Forces Option

Forces/Equipment Committed: If Special Forces went in, they would send only a 12 man team (all SF units are divisible by 12 for some arcane historical reason) however, due to the exotic nature of their equipment the SF Team would cost the same amount to deploy as the Ranger Company.

Mission Preparation: The SF Team Sergeant would request relaxed grooming standards for the team.

Infiltration Technique: The team would insist on separate travel orders with Max Per Diem, and each would get to the site of the hijacking by his own means. At least one third of the team would insist on jumping in.

Actions in the Objective Area: Once they arrived , the SF Team would cache their military uniforms, establish a Team Room, use their illegal Team Fund to stock the unauthorized Team Room Bar, check out the situation by talking to the locals, and have a Team Meeting to discuss the merits of the terrorists' cause.

Results of Operation: The Rescue/Recovery Operation would take two weeks to complete and by that time all of the terrorists would have been killed, (and would have left signed confessions); the passengers would be ruined psychologically for the remainder of their lives; and all of the women passengers would be pregnant. The 747 would be essentially unharmed, the team would have taken no casualties but would have used up, lost, or stolen all the "high speed" equipment issued to them.

A collection of jokes...

Having just moved into his new office, a pompous, new colonel was
sitting at his desk when an airman knocked on the door. Conscious of
his new position, the colonel quickly picked up the phone, told the
airman to enter, then said into the phone, "Yes, General, I'll be
seeing him this afternoon and I'll pass along your message. In the
meantime, thank you for your good wishes, sir." Feeling as though he
had sufficiently impressed the young enlisted man, he asked, "What do
you want?" "Nothing important, sir," the airman replied, "just here to
hook up your telephone."

---

A private is on duty in the motor pool when the phone rings: "Soldier,
can you tell me what equipment is available for use immediately?" The
voice on the other end asked. "Well, sir, we have two tanks, a half
dozen half-tracks, two armored personnel carriers, a couple of
motorcycles, and fat-ass Johnson's command jeep." "Soldier? Do you know
who you are speaking to?" "No sir." "This is Major Johnson, your
commander!" "Uh Sir? Do you know who you are speaking to?" "Not
yet!" "That's good! Bye, Fat-Ass!"

---

A couple of A-10's are escorting a C-130 Hercules and their pilots were
chatting with the pilot of the transport to pass the time. Talk fell on
the subject of relative merits of their respective aircraft with the
fighter pilots holding their planes were better because of their
maneuverability, weaponry and the like The C-130 pilot replied
"Yeah? Well I can do a few things in this old girl that you'd only
dream about." Naturally, he was challenged to demonstrate. "Just
watch," he tells them. The C-130 continues to fly straight and level,
and after several minutes the Herk pilot returns to the air and says,
"There! How was that?" Not having seen anything, the fighter pilots
say, "What are you talking about? What did you do?" He replies,
"Well, I got up, stretched my legs, got a cup of coffee, then went back
an took a leak."

---

Q:How do you know if there is a fighter pilot at your party?
A: He'll tell you.

---

Q:What's the difference between God and fighter pilots?
A: God doesn't think he's a fighter pilot......

---

Q:What's the difference between a fighter pilot and a jet engine?
A: A jet engine stops whining when the planes shuts down.

---

3 Marines were walking through the forest when they came upon a set of
tracks. The first marine said "Those are deer tracks." The second
marine said "No, those are elk tracks." The third marine said "You're
both wrong, those are moose tracks." The marines were still arguing
when the train hit them.

---

An Air Force Chief Master Sergeant and a General were sitting in the barbershop. They
were both just getting finished with their shaves-the barbers were reaching
for some after-shave to slap on their faces. The General shouted, "Hey, don't put that
crap on me! My wife will think I've been in a whorehouse!"  The Chief turned to his barber and
said, "Go ahead and put it on. My wife doesn't know what the inside of a whorehouse smells like.

Pilot's Ten Commandments

   1. Thou shalt abstain from the intersection takeoff for verily the runway behind thee, as the altitude above thee, cometh not to thine aid when thou needest them.

   2. Thou shalt not linger on active runways lest thou become like unto ground sirloin.

   3. Ignorest thou not thy checklists for many are the switches, handles, gauges and other demons awaiting to take cruel vengeance upon thee.

   4. Thou shalt cast thine eyes to thy right and also to thy left as thou passeth through the firmament lest thy fellow pilots bring flowers to thy widow and comfort her in other ways.

   5. Buzzeth not, for this shall surely incur the wrath of thy neighbors and the fury of the FAA shall be called down upon thy head.

   6. Thou shalt be ever mindful of thy fuel lest there be nothing in thy tank to sustain thee upon the air and thy days be made short.

   7. Trust not thine eyes to lead thee through the cloud lest the Archangel Gabriel await thee therein.

   8. Thou shalt not trespass into the thunderstorm lest the tempest rend the wings from thy chariot and cast thee naked into the firmament.

   9. Put not thy trust in weather prophets, for when the truth is not in, then they shall not accompany thee among thy ancestors.

  10. Often shalt thou confirm thine airspeed on final lest the earth rise up and smite thee.

Flying Clichés:

No matter what else happens, fly the airplane.
Forget all that stuff about thrust and drag, lift and gravity;
an airplane flies because of money.

It's better to be down here wishing you were up there,
than up there wishing you were down here.

If you're ever faced with a forced landing at night,
turn on the landing lights to see the landing area.
If you don't like what you see, turn' em back off.

A check ride ought to be like a skirt, short enough to be interesting
but still be long enough to cover everything.

Speed is life, altitude is life insurance.
No one has ever collided with the sky.

Always remember you fly an airplane with your head, not your hands.

Never let an airplane take you somewhere
your brain didn't get to five minutes earlier.

Don't drop the aircraft in order to fly the microphone.
An airplane flies because of a principle discovered by
Bernoulli, not Marconi.

"Unskilled" pilots are always found in the wreckage
with their hand around the microphone.

If you push the stick forward, the houses get bigger;
if you pull the stick back they get smaller.
(Unless you keep pulling the stick back-then they get bigger again.)

Hovering is for pilots who love to fly but have no place to go.

The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.

Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man. Landing is the first!

Everyone already knows the definition of a 'good' landing
is one from which you can walk away.
But very few know the definition of a 'great landing.
It's one after which you can use the airplane another time.

The probability of survival is equal to the angle of arrival.

IFR: I Follow Roads.

You know you've landed with the wheels up
when it takes full power to taxi.

Those who hoot with the owls by night,
should not fly with the eagles by day.

A helicopter is a collection of rotating parts going round and round
and reciprocating parts going up and down -
all of them trying to become random in motion.

Helicopters can't really fly -
they're just so ugly that the earth immediately repels them.

Pilots believe in clean living.
They never drink whiskey from a dirty glass.

Things which do you no good in aviation:
Altitude above you.
Runways behind you.
Fuel in the truck.
Half a second ago.
Approach plates in the car.
The airspeed you don't have.

If God meant man to fly, He'd have given him more money.

What's the difference between God and fighter pilots?
God doesn't think he's a fighter pilot.

Flying is not dangerous; crashing is dangerous.

A good simulator check ride is like successful surgery on a cadaver.

Asking what a pilot thinks about the FAA
is like asking a fireplug what it thinks about dogs.

Trust your captain but keep your seat belt securely fastened.

An airplane may disappoint a good pilot, but it won't surprise him.

Any pilot who relies on a terminal forecast
can be sold the Brooklyn Bridge.
If he relies on winds-aloft reports he can be sold Niagara Falls.

The friendliest flight attendants are those on the trip home.

Good judgment comes from experience
and experience comes from bad judgment.

Being an airline pilot would be great
if you didn't have to go on all those trips.

Aviation is not so much a profession as it is a disease.

The nicer an airplane looks, the better it flies.

There are three simple rules for making a smooth landing.
Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.

It's a good landing if you can still get the doors open.

Passengers prefer old captains and young flight attendants.

The only thing worse than a captain who never flew as copilot
is a copilot who once was a captain.

It's best to keep the pointed end going forward as much as possible.

If an earthquake suddenly opened a fissure in a runway
that caused an accident,
the NTSB would find a way to blame it on pilot error.

Any attempt to stretch fuel is guaranteed to increase headwind.

A thunderstorm is never as bad on the inside as it appears on the outside. It's worse.

It's easy to make a small fortune in aviation.
You start with a large fortune.

A male pilot is a confused soul who talks about women when he's flying,
and about flying when he's with a woman.

A fool and his money are soon flying more airplane than he can handle.

The last thing every pilot does before leaving the aircraft
after making a gear up landing
is to put the gear selection lever in the 'down' position.

Try to keep the number of your landings equal
to the number of your takeoffs.

Takeoff's are optional. Landings are mandatory.

You cannot propel yourself forward by patting yourself on the back.

CAP Quotes:

"Pull stick back plane go up, pull stick all the way back plane go down." -Andy Stockhousen, CAP

"Someday they are going to make an airplane were the cockpit isn't an afterthought." -Lt Col Dan Donovan, CFII

"Procedure, procedure, procedure. Do that and you'll never go wrong." -Lt Col Dan Donovan, CFII

"When the paperwork equals the weight of the airplane, it's time to fly." -Lt Col Dan Donovan, CFII

MY QUOTE!

Off topic question sparked by hte flags in the colgan shot...

I know AF has blue for Officer Flags and the Army Red. But what about the others?

Second question: Is it just General Officers/Admirals or do Bird Colonels/Captains get a flag too?

I know this is a late response But

Holders of the Medal of Honor also have a flag of 13 stars on a blue flag in the formation as shown on the medal itself.  Also Secretarys and Assistant Secretaries of Defense and the Services

It's supposed to be
"The probability of survival is inversely proportional to the angle of arrival.  Large angle of arrival, small chance of survival, and vice versa."

But very good.  Got me laugh today.
