Holding Pattern

Please be aware that on October 30th we are due for a major space weather event; a G3 Geomagnetic Storm.

This is one of the biggest ones to hit the area in many years if predictions are accurate. Currently predictions indicate an aurora might be visible all the way down to Oregon. I'm posting the direct feed below from the NOAA Space Weather Center. I suggest sending an email to go out regarding space weather as an educational opportunity of the potential aurora event (emphasis on potential, these things are fickle.)

HF radio is already being affected and potentially we may see GPS failures on Saturday/Sunday.

Message from Space Weather Prediction Center Follows:

Space Weather Message Code: WATA50
Serial Number: 65

WATCH: Geomagnetic Storm Category G3 Predicted

Highest Storm Level Predicted by Day:
Oct 29:  None (Below G1)  Oct 30:  G3 (Strong)  Oct 31:  G2 (Moderate)

THIS SUPERSEDES ANY/ALL PRIOR WATCHES IN EFFECT

NOAA Space Weather Scale descriptions can be found at

Potential Impacts: Area of impact primarily poleward of 50 degrees Geomagnetic Latitude.
Induced Currents - Power system voltage irregularities possible, false alarms may be triggered on some protection devices.
Spacecraft - Systems may experience surface charging; increased drag on low Earth-orbit satellites and orientation problems may occur.
Navigation - Intermittent satellite navigation (GPS) problems, including loss-of-lock and increased range error may occur.
Radio - HF (high frequency) radio may be intermittent.
Aurora - Aurora may be seen as low as Pennsylvania to Iowa to Oregon.
