Title: Tips For New Flight Commander at Encampment?
Post by: Picy3 on May 10, 2019, 06:07:21 AM
I recently was accepted as a Flight Commander at an encampment. I have staffed as support (DFAC) at another encampment but have not staffed line yet. At my squadron I have held Flight Sergeant for 6 months and Flight Commander for another 6 (or well I'm on my 6th month currently). Now I don't consider myself new to being on flight staff but I've heard a lot of stories from other friends that have staffed about other Flight Commanders who never staffed as Flight Sergeant and did terrible/just not that great overall.

I, for one, would love to be a good Flight Commander so I am just looking for tips or things I can do to prepare myself more (especially as one who was never a Flight Sergeant at an encampment), so that I have the best chance of doing my best and going above and beyond.

Also while we are on this topic, what are some things that either you have seen done by flight staff or done yourselves that worked great as Cadre. (For fun or serious)

Congrats on the assignment.  Be prepared, the flight commander is one of the most critical and the hardest working line position at the encampment.  The flight commander has the responsibility for ensuring the flight works as a team and learns what is being taught.  Remember this is not basic training.  You and the flight sergeant are not MTIs or DIs.  Heightened intensity is part of the process, but that does not mean screaming and yelling all the time.

The cadets in your flight will make mistakes.  They will need direction and training.  This is ok, its the purpose of the encampment.  Your flight will most likely have a range of ages, grades, and experience.  Not every cadet will respond the same way.  Some will handle stress better than others.

Learn the encampment guide.  This sets the tone for the encampment and what is and is not allowed.  Also, make sure you are up to speed on your uniform, customs & courtesies, and drill.  The student cadets in your flight will be watching your every move and emulating you.  Make sure you are teaching them the right way to do things.  The way the regs say, not what has always been done.

This will also be one of the most valuable lessons in leadership for you.  You will make mistakes.  Learn from these and remember it is ok to make mistakes.  And most of all, have fun!

Talk to your Flight Training Officer. They're watching your cadets too and might see stuff you might have missed.
They've most likely have been your shoes and can usually offer good advice.
