If anyone would like to know of my time this week with a certain NY mission, feel free to PM me. Can't  say any specifics here or Mods will delete it. But surely I can say this much:

It was an incredible experience all this past week. Everyone involved was great to work with. The missions themselves are fun and good leaning experiences. And if you go up there with a good group of guys like our Squadron, you can make it so much more. We had folks there as MOs who were pilots working on their MP status. So in-between the actual missions we we able to get lots of SQTR items checked off (ELT searches, etc.). Checked out with turbos, RGs and much more. Plan ahead, be ready for opportunities and your squadron can really come back home far ahead of the game. We sure did.

Our guys have already signed up for future weeks. We will be back again and again.  Don't let this opportunity pass you by. :)

Didn't know it was nationwide or how to sign up for it?

I call bull.  If it was that big of an event it would have been advertised.  If it is so secret squirrel you shouldn't have posted about it.  Either way this doesn't pass the smell test.

PHall

The Drone Escort mission is not secret, classified or even FOUO. You can read all about it in the BoG Meeting Minutes!

He's talking about Reaper escort. I assure you it's a real mission.

The last time he mentioned it he got shouted down by people screaming "OPSEC!" (needlessly so, IMO)

If that is in fact what he is talking about fine.  But again if its so Secret Squirrel then don't say anything.  I can assure you alot of what we do outside of the CD aspect is not so secretive.

I know requests have gone out to Wing Commanders to ask for folks to help out.  Check with you Wing Operations folks to inquire.

Talk was that General Myrick would be visiting us one day this week. I didn't know which.

He landed in a CAP plane and I happened to be hanging around in the hangar between sorties talking to the techs working on some Reapers. He was not in blues nor had any uniform identification. I was thinking he was another pilot like me bringing a plane over and maybe to fly some himself. I introduced myself and he said "Hello, I'm Larry." LOL  So I asked if he would like to see where the pilots were flying the Reapers and took him on a tour, and then took him to the break room were all the other CAP folks were. It was at that point I realized he was the General. Ha!

He flew back seat in one of the missions and kept saying how much fun it was. Really nice laid back guy. A fun day.

My wing posted photos of our participation on the Facebook page.

The existence of the mission is truly not secret.

As I recall, there were rather specific details mentioned. One extreme to the other with the current thread.

Yes, hence my making this one just about the fun of it all. Trying to encourage others to find out how their Squadron can join in. Its really a much different experience that other types of missions. Possible for a long time frame, so they WILL need as many folks as possible to sign up. It truly is worth the trip. Travel, hotel and per diem included. You just need to take off work a week.

So you're saying the New York Wing and Northeast Region can't manage to supply enough pilots to fly the mission they went after?
That's not good...

DakRadz

I suppose that depends on how often the week off work is required, PHall.

Even once-a-year encampments usually rotate people and/or positions around, and a PPL is a bit rarer than even good encampment cadre.

Thats a mischaracterization of what I'm saying. I'm saying that there are plenty of opportunities for everyone to get a chance to gain some valuable experience and have fun as well. The mission is NOT limited to the New York Wing and Northeast Region. Folks from Alabama there this past week, and crews from the states of Washington and Georgia there this coming week.

IOW ... don't let New York Wing and Northeast Region have all the fun. Join in like we did. :)

Now to answer your question a little more directly, its my understanding we only have less than 50 pilots in all of CAPS who are Ops Quals listed as C-182 Turbo qualified(?) Some may not be interested, some may not be able to devote a week on a regular basis, some are happy to do one week and not come back ... etc. The pool is small. The pool of MOs is plenty big. If you are C-182 CAP qualified, don't let the turbo part get in your way. Arrangements can be made. If you are not C-182 qualified, it would be worth finding one and getting qualified so you can make this trip.

Why?

Is there some kind of magic wall that prevents people from other wings/regions from participating in missions in NER/NYWG?

The concept of One CAP means that we can draw resources not just from our local community (squadron), area (group), state (wing), region, but we can draw volunteers nationally.  That's a tremendous strength.

And you and I have seen more then one CAP operation where "outsiders" were not welcome. It was their game and they got to say who got to play.

Of course ... but hey ... I'm trying to share a 'happy' experience. And am hoping others will take advantage of this.

For every Mission Pilot, a Mission Observer is needed. Opportunities for many folks. Go for it.  :)

Sounds like the guys from Washington state coming this next week. Some of them have jobs as well. I took off from work last week. Another fella ate up some personal leave time and vacation days.

It was well worth it for me.
