I heard news rumors that Fossett was wearing an ELT Watch.  I did a bit of research and came up with this page.  Its relatively low power, but neat invention called the Breitling EMERGENCY.  They go very in-depth with its description.

Breitling watches have been a long favorite in the aviation world (though a bit expensive).  What I wonder is if Breitling will make a 406 MhZ digital version?

That'd be interesting to see! I'm utterly amazed that a watch has enough juice to put out even a 121.5 signal at all.  When I heard about it for the first time I thought to myself, "No way, a watch cant do that.  Even if it puts out a signal, its range gonna be like 30 feet at best".  But after looking at the specs of it, I can see how it would do well.

Dan,

Next time we have a beacon down for battery replacement I'll walk you through it.  You can actually have pointer send you variations, including those which run off of 9V batteries, and can continuously decrease power by yanking them.  All you need is about 1.5V, which is the equivalent of 1 AAA battery, or a watch battery... Power is negligible at 1000', you'll hear it immediately over it, or within about 1/4 mi on the ground... only problem that may arise is the batter longevity after it is activated.
