YP-389 is mentioned on page 156 of History of United States Naval Operations in World War II: The Battle of the Atlantic 1939-1943 by Samuel Eliot Morison.

It was sunk by surface gunfire from U-701 commanded by Horst Degen around daybreak on June 19, 1942 off Cape Hatteras. Six officers and men died. The account does not mention any survivors or rescues/rescuers.

The sinking of YP-389 is given an entire chapter (pages 261-266) in Torpedo Junction by Homer H. Hickam, Jr. According to that account the USCG station at Ocracoke rescued. It does not state how many were rescued but of the rescued one died that night. 5 other crewmen were never found.

U-701 was in turn sunk on July 7, 1942 by LT Harry Kane flying a US Army Lockheed Hudson A-29. His crew was LT L.A. Murray (navigator) and CPL P.L. Broussard (bombadier). It was sunk by 3 350 pound depth-charges.

The survivors of U-701 were found by USN blimp King-8.The USCG sent an amphibious aircraft commanded by LCDR Richard L. Burke to pick up the survivors. He picked up 7, including Degen.

There is no mention of CAP in either account.
