I DID IT!  I DID IT! I DID IT!
I got to train a flight of senior members in D&C/C&C!

About 10 minutes into our meeting tonight I was pulled aside by the cadet commander.  He then informed me that I was to instruct some members from the 10th Senior Support Squadron in drill and ceremonies!  I had no idea that I would be doing this, and had no plan whatsoever.  I had a flight of 5 smembers, so for D&C I trained them in the positions of attention, falling into a flight, proper saluting technique, stationary drill (L/R face + about).  In C&C I taught them about saluting CAP officers, officers of the military, ran through the cadet and senior ranking system, reporting, and C&C for flag raisings/lowerings.

The whole class took no more than half an hour to 45 minutes.  They were a bit rough in drill, but hey, who isn't their first time around?  They were very interested in the C&C part.  They told me that they were glad we had the class because they learned a lot and it actually cleared up a lot of questions and misunderstandings they had had for quite some time.

Good job! We wil be using senior NCOs for that portion of our OTS as well.

Interestingly, my 15yo, a C/TSgt was asked to train a bellydancing troupe in D&C. They wanted to do a drill team like dance (they called it a "zill drill" - zills are those little finger cymbals they use) and wanted to know enough about military-style marching to make it look convincingly sharp.

Very cool!  That be a neat show to see!

All officers should be proficient in D&C. I can't tell you how many times I've seen an officer grill a cadet for messing up an about face, when that officer couldn't even do it. And that officer was prior AF!! Congrats on showing that unit some D&C. Maybe this will spread for you, and you will get to show other officers D&C! Just no bears  ;)

Very good!

Anyone give you and flack, and spew hate and discontent?

Zero!  None whatsoever!  The seniors said that they enjoyed the class, and I think I might do a follow up to polish and promote memory of the skills they learned.

The class was actually suggested/mandated? by our wing commander.  The coincidence of me putting up a senior D&C thread earlier makes me suspicious that he's watching my every move...

Big Brother is watching...... ;)

Very nice, I'm glad everything went well.

Well, we had another senior D&C/C&C class.  This time I had an entire senior squadron.  Went over fantastically!  Good learning, great questions, unanimously enjoyed!  We're going to have another class to cover more D&C, we ran out of time tonight.

I'm really happy with the positive feedback and acceptance of the class.  Everybody had questions that seemed to have been "burning" in their minds; things they had been confused about, didn't know, and didn't understand.  Truly educational experience.  I strongly recommend other squadrons try it!

Can you do US a favor and write up a list of Do's and Don'ts that worked for this experiment.  I would like to pass some more ideas onto my cadets staff, and having another cadets success never hurts

DO
Keep things simple - Its hard enough to cram an entire CC/DC class into an hour, dont complicate things so that nothing makes sense as you fly through the material

ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Study up before you teach the class

Have a teaching plan/curriculum when proposing the idea to your command staff.  I was lucky, in that the order came from the wing commander, rather than an official suggestion of my own.

Have interaction/practical use.  Role play a bit to demonstrate your CC.

Explain the value of the class.

Get feedback from the class.

DON'T
Assume that your class is completely devoid of all CC/DC knowledge, but be prepared in-case they are

Pull a lesson plan out of your ^&* 5 minuets before you teach it

Just wondering a bit about this designation:

Do they meet at a military Support Group building? ae: 10th Support Group?

There is at least one unit in PAWG that has that in the title.  I have also seen references to others in old (60's/70's) Personnel Authorizations.  The one that I know of, which still exists, is "Communications Support Flight."  These were likely done a lot before a reg change.  It is probably why it is specifically disauthorized in the current regulation.

Negative, that isn't even their official name.  Thats just what everybody calls them for short.  Their full name is the Milwaukee Senior Support Squadron 10, and they meet at Timmerman Airfield in Milwaukee, WI at the same time as my squadron.

Quote from: ctrossen on May 26, 2007, 11:29:09 PMActually Milwaukee Senior Support Squadron 10 (informally known as the 10th Senior Support Squadron). Back around 1990 or so, WI Wing dismantled it's group structure. Only two group HQs had any real amount of strength to them - Group 10 and Group 12, so both were reorganized as senior squadrons. The 10th and 12th Senior Support Squadrons (though how the name changed is beyond me). The "10th" is co-located with my unit - they pretty much provide the aircraft and most of the pilots for us.
