An update from central Indiana: 31 Jan, 20:15 local, very light freezing rain, all county schools closed for 1 Feb already. Indiana Wing on alert. At a press conference at noon, Governor Daniels said to be prepared for life without electricity for 4 days.
Nothing much going on here in NE IL. My CD was driving in from INWG and sad traffic was bad on 65 with light freezing rain.
I don't anticipate a lot of activity here, we have snow plows and an upcoming Mayoral election. By Friday afternoon things will be back to normal.
I have, however, promised the kids I would throw all the snow into one mountain so they can build a killer fort.
South Texas is preparing for 20 degree weather...even grandpa is coming over from his house. People are expecting snow and sleet.
The governor of Missouri has just declared a state of emergency, and has called out the national guard. I am currently on standby again, just after working a 12 hour shift :D
In the greater st Louis area we already have about 250 homes without electricity, and many non-interstate roads are already closed or impassible.....maybe MO wing and Ks wing can get some missions out of this one....

Couple weeks back, a buddy of mine was boasting on FB that FL was the only state in the US without snow someplace in it. A friend of his said "No snow in Hawaii!" to which I posted a pic of the live feed from the top of Mauna Kea, where there is snow on the ground. She quickly amended that to "Well, there's no snow down here on the beach!"
Frankly, I'd rather join her on the beach. Who's with me? Maybe we can get a discount if we buy plane tix to Hawaii in bulk...
48-50 and bright sunshine all week here in the mts of central CA. I remember well the snow in the DC area, where I resided for 20 years.
high of 12 today, high of 2 tomorrow.
+6 to 12 inches of snow that should let up by tomorrow. Which is good, because we still have the last foot and a half that fell last time. I have pathways shoveled in front of my house that are just as high as my waist at the lowest point.

Update from one of the north-most cadets in Missouri:
- Schools closed early today
- Schools canceled tomorrow
- Local walmart nearly ransacked for milk, as a shipment got stuck on the highway a few hundred miles down road
- Blizzard warning issued.
- Governor declares preemptive state of emergency
- National Guard activated and ready to provide assistance
All of this over a little ice, not even snow flakes yet.
I'm expecting them to give the order to start evacuating to Mexico at anytime now. (Day after tomorrow reference)

Forecast in SW Ohio looks fun. Freezing rain into tomorrow night, <1/4 in. of ice on power lines. Cruddy driving conditions. Squadron meeting canceled. Stocked up on basic foodstuffs, generator primed and ready. This could be a doozy. My prayers go out to anyone in the path of this thing.
Forecast anywhere from 1-2 to 6-10 inches depending on where you live in the Great State of Kansas. Also add the wind (30mph+), which could cause several feet of drifts, and wind chill. Most of the schools in the state called off tomorrow. As far as I know, at this moment, we aren't doing anything, however, I am usually one of the last to know.
Not much in southern Indiana. The roads are slicker than snot, and vehicles are iced over, not frost, but thin sheets of ice. But the rain has stopped for now. I just hope it remains that way.
Do believe I spoke too soon, jinxed myself. It is now raining rather good.

6-10" of snow is an average storm here, we've already had a number of them this winter and not only did schools NOT close, life went on pretty much as usual.
Update from the St Louis area. Interstate 70 is closed at the Missouri river due to ice on the bridge. Fire rescue frequency's are overwhelmed with code tones. Major ice accumulations are occurring across the St Louis area due to the rivers feeding the storm. We are in for a long long couple days. I will be sleeping at the department tonight. OH, and the national weather service just upped our snow totals to 12-24 inch's.....

Still nice and clear here in Bloomington, IN. Though everything is covered with a shinny layer of ice, they decided to close school for Monroe County as I heard it at 0700. Colleges have all canceled for the day most of the way across IN, IVY Tech has closed ALL of it's campuses but Bloomington. Still waiting to see what the rest of the day brings, temp is supposed to stay at a high of 31 with rain chances at 100% at noon.

I was shoveling snow for about an hour this morning. The best part about it, being outside watching all the bad drivers that I had the good fortune to avoid on my way into work.
Visibility in Napa, California is about 50 feet, its 34 Degrees. Sarcasm levels are indeed high here this morning. Southern Indiana must have their sense of humor index below the acceptable threshold.

Very true, I am not in a funny kind of mood. I kept throwing Ice on the sidewalk deck and driveway all night because the ice kept reforming and I didn't want the kids to slip and break an arm or anything new when they had to go to school this morning because our admin system here is full of idiots and didn't call off school until late this morning so we were afraid that they just might have school.
On the bright side I can go ice skating on my pond again.

· Precipitation starting around 11 a.m. to noon in our area
· Looks like little to no ice accumulation for our area; it should be mostly, if not all, snow
· Winds of 15-25 mph by noon
· Winds picking up 25-35 by 3 p.m. with gusts to 45 p.m.
· Sustained high winds until midnight
· Precipitation ending mid-Wednesday morning
· In short, the forecast remains the same with a slight uptick (1-2") of snowfall forecast
I am also a member with my county's Emergency Management Agency and starting at Noon on Tuesday we are starting operations and ending sometime on Wednesday. So almost a 24hr Op, in my almost four years with the agency we have never had a Winter Weather Operation last that long. Its going to be a very long day!

24 and windy with what I would describe as a "dusting" of snow West of ORD, which would be unusual if this
weren't, you know...February.
Just received a reverse 911 that local schools will be closed Wednesday, wing hq just shut down for the duration.
I did some personal and work shopping this morning and most stores were pretty busy considering the time -
Home Depot and Walmart bringing out pallets of winter stuff like shovels and such, clearly recently put away,
setting them up in front of the lawn mowers and spring yard care displays.
There isn't a news outlet in site without a crawl or other graphic about the weather - it appears the media are
the most shocked and concerned that it snows in the winter.
Some critical tips for driving in the snow:
Only clear the absolute bare minimum amount of snow from your windows, and if possible,
make sure they are fogged up on the inside, too.
If your car has ABS, make sure to pump the brakes in a skid.
If your car has manual brakes, slam on them with both feet and hold them down, swinging the wheel violently from
side to side.
Always floor the gas when the light turns green. If you lose traction, hold the pedal down until you
start to move. In fact, all use of the brake and gas should be abrupt - as if you were unaware you'd need
to use either until the second you actually press on them.
Use of the steering wheel should also be abrupt and extreme - try to avoid anticipating problems, gentle
use of controls, or slowing down.
Wandering across multiple lanes at 1/3 the speed of the rest of traffic is a good tip, too, but this takes
practice to really do well.
Above all, just drive as if you are the only person on the road and had no idea it was going to be snowing
today.

The only "safe" place to walk is in the strips of snow that haven't melted. The large tree outside my house is crackling, I suspect because of the ice on the surface, not that the tree is breaking. Drifting over but drivable. However I won't know what they are like for the next two days. I have no reason to leave the house and can't see the road from the house.
I agree. I plan to hunker down and ride it out. Most schools are canceled, and planning on missing work again. Madison County is under a travel advisory.
Pretty much all schools are cancelled here, plus most university campus departments freaked out and decided to high-tail it.
Update from central Indiana. We picked up about a ¼" of ice last night. Then we picked up about a 1" of sleet this afternoon, now it is raining. Walking is just as dangerous as driving. I even had to put sand down in the back yard so the dogs could go do their business :o
My employer is based out of Addison, IL (Chicago area); they sent an email out at 2:30 pm that they are sending everyone home at 3 pm and that they will be closed on Wednesday.
The local news said 800 National Guard have been staged around Indiana.
12 counties have issued Travel Warnings. This means that if you get caught driving in the county and it is not an emergency, you can get a ticket. Pretty much the whole northern 2/3's of the state is under some kind of travel advisory.
Forecast: If it falls out of the sky, we are going to get it.
A snow emergency has been declared for the Greater St Louis area. National guard Humvee ambulances are now being used because the normal ambulances cant handle the roads.
Interstate 70 is closed from wentzville Missouri to the Sadelia exit. (some 250miles give or take)
No major power outages yet, but the electrical company is warning those with fireplaces to have wood, and those without to find your local shealters.
St Louis proper is asking for certified EMT's and Paramedics to come work at local staging areas.
Lambert international is shutdown with no flights coming or going.
and I am getting paid double time because i cant go the 3 miles to home from the station....

Yeah, my problem is that I live off of a side street plowed by my landlord so I can't get an idea of what main roads are like until I'm already on them.

Were in the same boat Spaceman. The temp is a surprising 34 deg here, and the ice is melting fast, yes we are still in Bloomington, IN. The temp is supposed to drop like a brick until 1000, then get back up to a scorching 22 deg in the early afternoon and drop like a brick until 18 deg at 2300. Lots of joy, everything will turn into a solid sheet of ice tonight because of the melting and re-freezing. Stay safe all, and stay warm.
The coolest thing to own in a snowstorm is a stick 4x4 pickup.
Inversely suckie is a stick 4x4 in a snowstorm with broken 4x4. With no weight in the back even a heavy rain gives me traction issues, and the extra torque from the stick means I spin the hard plastic Big Wheel tires on almost every start.
Thankfully my wife's SUV is fully operational, though I basically have to fold my legs twice to drive it.
Is was insanely coldand windy today... not such a great thing when your on trash duty and in blues. Had to do some PT to get my hat... And I'm in houston texas...

Have the same problem with my 2wd Pickup. Simple $20 solution, 4 - 70 lb plastic bags of sand from Home Depot in the bed over the rear axle makes all the difference in the world.
Yep, I'm in my home command post today (road not plowed, little car is the worst I've had for snow driving in many years (good on gas only). 10 inches of snow yesterday, and 3 1/2 inches and still coming down primarily sleet at this point. CAP meetings throughout the wing canceled yesterday and today.
No CAP involvement in the wing relating to this storm. HOWEVER, locally participating in amateur radio skywarn/weather net at 2 hour intervals via the local radio repeater.
Hawaii is looking like the best place to locate to!

Forecast for Ground Hog Day at Cape Canaveral and vicinity: Partly cloudy with temperatures in the low 80's. Scattered showers expected around dinnertime. In Florida if the Ground Hog sees his shadow he applies sunscreen and goes to the beach.
Up here where the air is rare we had little to no snow, but SOMEONE forgot to pay the heating bill. Woke to -37F. Windchill was -45F. Today's predicted high -5F. Tomorrow's predicted high 22F with light snow.

I haven't ventured outside yet this morning to get pics but I'm unimpressed with the snow. We're supposed to get another 4-5" today on top of yesterday. The joys of the SE shore of Lake Michigan.
I just heard on the radio that the Rodential-Solar Occlusive Meteorological Prognostication System (RSOMPS) has determined that Spring will come early this year. Its as good as any of the climate science out there, so don't worry about a thing! Oh yeah, try not to die.

My school closed it door for the rest of the week on account of rolling brownouts. We already had Friday off for the livestock show.
It was a bit windy here last night and today. There were several tree service truck out and about removing fallen trees as I took the car over to get serviced. And maybe chilly, too - in the low 50s. It's 55 and clear here, with a forecast of dark later in the evening, followed by continued dark until morning.
The whole thing kind of wrapped around Southern Illinois. Not much going on except blowing snow which ain't sticking and CCCOOOLLLLDDDD! Thought it might be slick since it rained all day yesterday but the high winds pretty much evaporated it. Main roads are clear and dry. Biggest headache for me was that my STL Post Dispatch didn't get delivered before I left for work.

Always trying to look on the bright side... there's no way the plow driver can hit my mailbox. Just the door is visible; the mailbox and post are safely buried in an 8 foot snow bank.
About a dozen roofs collapsed in Connecticut today, so I'm feeling a little better about keeping mine cleared. Snow rakes are being scalped at $100 or more.
With the winds being so high, there is very little snow on the roofs around here.
Took a drive for some 'joe a bit ago. Streets are plowed and no big deal, mountains everywhere,
most area businesses open, but McD's, and Starbuck's ((*sniff*)) were still snowed in with plows just
starting to show up.
At least around here we can get back to worrying about the next American Idol.

My roads are clear, a huge improvement over 24 hours ago. Though if I had stopped at the pumps when I went to the convenience store I would still be there trying to push or dig out.

Michigan...the only state where you can visit Hell, Nirvana, Paradise, and Christmas in the same day. It's a long drive, but doable.
No snow in Houston yet. Maybe tomorrow.

We only got like 5" or so, a light dusting compared to some places. However, the city of Abilene and TxDOT aren't familiar with this thing you call snow. Finally they're bringing in more snow trucks from up to three hours away so that there will be more than 2 operating in the entire city. Of course those are TxDOT trucks, which means the actual city streets will remain terrible until this stuff finally melts off on its own.
