Title: AAFES price list
Post by: dogboy on June 09, 2010, 05:31:58 PM

There's no printed catalog anymore but I have a pdf of an old version I can send to anyone who PMs me. Thanks to another board member who supplied it to me.

Here's the ordering instructions from AAFES

You may use this list when you place your order by calling 1-800-527-2345.  Please select option 0 or *, to bypass SSN and go directly to a customer service representative.  At that time they will request the special Civil Air Patrol number you have been provided to identify you as an authorized patron.  The "M" Code noted below will assist the catalog associate in identifying what items you are interested in purchasing within our system.  Please provide the "M" Code and quantity to the Customer Service person along with the size needed of any sized items on this list.

Cool - good info to have.

I have purchased other uniform accessories not on the above list with no issues (blousers, gloves, etc.)

Which "special Civil Air Patrol number" would that be?  Our CAP ID number?

When you setup your account by faxing in CAPID, etc., you are assigned a number.

What the crap?!  I never got a number!  They just took my orders after I set up my account and never asked me for anything else.  The last one was like...I think a year ago?

I thought we determined that they did still have BDUs in stock online/by mail/fax?

At the risk of sounding like the complete rookie that I am,  will most MCSS stores at AF bases carry the basic blues items, and is it cheaper to order from AAFES.

Short sleeve poly-wool shirt (shade 1630) item M202G - $39.95
Long sleeve poly-wool shirt (shade 1630) item M202H - $42.95

Slightly darker than the poly-cotton (shade 1550) shirts but they hold up better. Dry clean them only - do not starch them!

Don't know for sure... you may have to special-order it at the MCSS.

If I recall correctly, the shirts are "dual purposed" for french and barrel cuffs.  In other words, I've never seen the shirt with just true french cuffs, but rather they have barrell cuffs (without the "fold back") that also have holes stitched for cuff links which you can use in lieu of the standard buttons which are also there.

Yup, that's the way I've seen them, too.

In the mid 80's, first time I saw that I thought "what the heck, someone missed, and they hid it with the button" ... (which must be why these are here at Ross ... since you can't see the dual button holes unless you look hard for it ... it's like they ended up with two shirts in one by accident .. )

Yeah, the wandering youthful mind..

oak2007, what item is it that you have been getting from them at a lower price? looking over the website it appears that all of the prices are a lot higher than the ones listed earlier in this post.

Would someone with current online AAFES access be willing to help with an updated price list?  I can give you a quick way to do it, so you don't have to type them all up.

This information is very useful and can save members A LOT of money.

+1

I'm working on my "residence" lesson plans for the new Level 1, and I was putting together a cost comparison "Corporate vs. USAF". There's about a $200 difference between the old AAFES prices posted at the top and what is currently shown at u-4u.

I didn't see that the catalog is accessible openly now.  The items say "Authorized military customers: Add to cart to view Exchange price."  What's the deal with being able to see the Exchange price, then?

They have A price, then they have that notice below it.  So what does it mean?  Anybody know?  Very strange that it'd be like "here's a price....now log in to see the price for authorized people."  Maybe we can just do quick links if all the prices are the same - a cheat sheet kind of thing.

If you go into Clothing Sales be sure to check the prices.  They have a brand name short sleeve shirt (DS CP) that goes for $30 to $35 dollars and then they have one that I call the plain wrapper version that goes for around $17.00.  The difference is in the material blend but for what we do, the $17.00 works great for me.

Actually DSCP is the military issue shirt (shade 1550 polyester/cotton). (Defense Service Center Philadelphia, made from UNICOR prison labor); The commercial grade polyester/wool shirt (shade 1582) is almost twice as much as DSCP issue and is dry clean only. The DSCP shirt is wash and wear. Propper used to make the poly/wool shirt; don't know who does it now.

Frankly, does it even matter at this point? The only reason this, the catalogs, and the
instructions were needed was to allow members to place orders via the relatively convuluted process
that was available at the time.

AAFES isn't even an option for CAP members any more, and those who have access via
some other affiliation can use the search function for the prices.

If you're in the small group that has an MCSS available, then the items and prices are
in front of you, and if you aren't, it's irrelevant.

Prices are pretty close in store to what is listed on shopmyechange.com if you're interested.  Prices aren't terribly different from what's listed at the beginning of this post.

You can still buy the dlats short sleeve blue shirt for $14.17.

I currently have online access to AAFES but as an overseas civilian contractor I cannot purchase uniform items online. Only active duty, reserve, guard and retirees coded in DEERS can purchase uniforms in shopmyexchange.

Yep, you can't buy through shopmyexchange.com.  Merely pointing out that there is no need to compile a new price list as one go see what the prices are in clothing sales at that site.

The only place you can purchase DLATS uniform items is from AAFES. Outside vendors like Vanguard have no access to them.
This is one reason why the uniform prices at Vanguard are higher then AAFES.
Title: Re: AAFES price list
Post by: GaryJSO on May 31, 2017, 01:26:44 AM
Vanguard's (IMHO) most horrendously over-priced uniform item has to be the Blue Short- and Long-Sleeve Shirt.  DLATS (Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support) sells these for $12-$18, varying by sleeve and sex.  Vanguard (and AAFES) sells an approved commercial version of these, allegedly of better materiel and workmanship (not my experience, but that's what the AAFES employees will tell you when you ask) for between $35 and $45.

There is a potential alternative DLATS source for those who can't get to AAFES Clothing Sales,  If there is a Coast Guard Station nearby, the USCG wears the exact same light blue shirt as the USAF.  And their prices are within a few cents of the AAFES DLATS price.  According to the USCG Uniform Distribution Center's current Stockbook (https://www.uscg.mil/uniform/docs/STOCKBOOK.pdf) the USCG Male S/S Blue Shirt costs $14.31, the AAFES DLATS Price for that item is $14.17.  The USCG Exchanges also have leather and synthetic low quarter shoes, ribbon mounts, shirt garters, white t's, socks, blousing cords (in dark blue) and a number of other military uniform-unique accessories for sale at prices on par with those of an AAFES MCS.

A couple caveats: First, the USCG dark blue uniform items (trousers, garrison cap, service jacket, etc.) are NOT the same shade of blue as the corresponding USAF items.  Close but not the same.  The garrison cap is also cut slight differently than the AF Flight Cap; again, close but not the same.

Second, since USCG is part of DHS, Civil Air Patrol does not have the same nation-wide clothing sales privileges we have with AAFES.  I looked up the CGEX's governing publications on USCG.mil, and discovered that access is basically at the discretion of the station commander.  When I visited CGES Mayport  a couple years ago, I bought some shirts and uniform accessories using my DoD ID, but I then showed them my CAP ID and asked if a CAP member that didn't happen to also be a military member would be able to buy uniform items there.  After some side discussions, both clerks agreed "that should be OK", which was not the firm policy I was hoping for.  I had intended to draft a letter to the station commander to get a formal answer, but that's somewhere in the to-do-when-I-get-the-time pile.

Not a universal solution, but there are a slew of little (the total area Station Mayport is smaller than one of the two main parking lots at my son's HS) CG Stations all over the country, and by necessity, each has a CGEX that stocks a good selection of the basic uniform items.  Mayport didn't have any mess dress uniform items for sale, but did have almost all sizes of the male and female short- and long-sleeve AF shirts.  Worth checking out if you happen to be close to one.

I've been buying this stuff for many years, and the DLATS items are certainly of lower quality. That is true across the board for all the services.

DLATS is the lowest quality by far.  You get what you pay for.  The AAFES counterparts are better quality but not always enough to justify the cost difference.

DLATS clothing items are mostly made by UNICOR - Federal Prison Industries. They can only be issued at basic training or sold at military clothing sales stores. They are normally not sold to the general public, unless acquired by surplus.

Not necessarily.  I cannot order Air Force uniforms that are DLATS--gives me a "You're not allowed to order this".  I can order Air Force items that are non-DLATS as well as Army items that are both DLATS and non-DLATS.

Do not know if this is just a "me" thing or if other veterans are affected the same way.

And I got yet a third result.  I am a retired Army officer.  AAFES will let my buy most uniform items online - but not DLAATS items.  I can buy the $41 shirt - but not the $14 shirt - that online looks like the same thing.  I even think its the same picture.

In person they don't care how I was authorized to get in the building - all customers are the same at that point.

I was truly surprised to find I could by anything online except a DLAATS uniform item.  Only possibility I can think of is that DLAATS is there for enlisted and online at least, my retired rank makes a difference.  As has been said, they don't care when you physically go there in person.  Which would be the only way I could get ABU's, as I don't think they even exist in a non-DLAATS version.

I have had varying experience buying AF uniforms in person. According to a couple of places, DLAATS items are universally restricted to folks with green and red ID cards. Other places let anyone buy them. USN and USMC uniforms are generally sold in two different locations - the uniform store for DLAATS stuff, and the exchange for everything else, simplifying the restrictions.

Probably wouldn't be AAFES if it wasn't.

There's probably some tomfoolery going on with DEERS too since that's what AAFES privileges are based on.

Soooo....at the end of all that, is the supposed process as outlined in CAPM 39-1 defunct? Is it no longer possible to get an MCSS catalog sent to a unit (perhaps electronically, if not in print?), or to gain individual access by calling some magic telephone number and then ordering over the phone? Has all that gone away with the advent of shopmyexchange.com?

As a veteran who has some sense of AAFES, my commander has tasked me with getting to the bottom of this and getting our unit access to uniforms ASAP.

Thanks for any insights anyone has on how to proceed here!

QuoteWhat workarounds?

Find an Active Duty Service Member, Reservist, National Guardsman or Military Retiree that has access to AAFES, give him a list of your needs (and cash) and have him/her either in person, or online, purchase the requested items.

Not ideal, but most Military Members I know would happily help out a CAP unit/member if asked.

The only issue, ABUs are soon to unavailable (ACUS too) and the only field uniforms that you be able to get from AAFES will be OCP pattern.

And before you have to ask, any CAP unit/member in the Greater Chicagoland area that would like to ask me for help, send me a PM, and I will assist you as best I am able.

Haha thanks. Do you happen to know how to specify a LS with french cuffs? Is that a separate number entirely?

If I recall correctly, the shirts are "dual purposed" for french and barrel cuffs.  In other words, I've never seen the shirt with just true french cuffs, but rather they have barrell cuffs (without the "fold back") that also have holes stitched for cuff links which you can use in lieu of the standard buttons which are also there.

Yep, i bought a DLATS 1550 SS and LS at McConnell AFB on Tuesday. The LS can be button or cuff link closed. And you are also correct, they are not true French cuffs, but are, in fact, barrel cuffs.

Also, FYI, I bought a pair of Trousers, shade 1625 (100%) polyester. According to The MCSS manger, there is currently a nation wide shortage of Shade 1620 trousers, in all sizes. She said they have a policy letter from the AF that, for the time being, shade 1625 trousers CAN be worn with the 1620 coat. Not sure how that affects us, (I don't currently own a Service Coat anyway, since I'm newly below max gross takeoff weight). It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

At El Segundo they had 1620's, but not only had very few 1625 they told me they were being discontinued.  But El Segundo doesn't follow any air base rules - like actually having a runway, so who knows.

Los Angeles AFB's mission isn't to fly airplanes which is why don't don't have a runway. They're a procurement base. These are the guys who buy stuff like satellites and rockets for the Air Force. Take a look around the neighborhood. You see companies like Boeing, SpaceX, The Aerospace Company, Northrop.
Heck, they weren't even a full fledged Air Force Base until about 1980 or so. They were an Air Force Station before that.
