Title: Mounted Units?
Post by: davedove on November 07, 2006, 08:24:13 PM
I saw a picture over on CAPBlog which showed a unit on exercise using llamas as pack animals.  That got me to thinking, are there any units out there who regularly use horses or the like for search operations?  I know that historically there have been such units.  Plus, there are some places still in this country that you can't access with a truck, and certainly not a van.

What?  We can't have ATV's but we can have horses?  :D

Well, we can't really have either; however, we can use them.  CAP just can't own it.  I remember reading about a mounted GT trial out in like Montana about a year ago or so.

I have been on more than one search where locals not affiliated with any organization had to ferry in CAP members and/or supplies for us viz ATV's.  Is this no ATV thing a reg or what?

Yup.

So does that mean that we can operate them.

Does it? Your guess is as good as mine. Look in the 60-3? It just says CAP can't own them.

I guess if it says nothing about not operating them, then that would mean that we can operate them.  Then the next question is who can operate them.  Obviously a lot of older cadets ride them on the weekends, and would be safer on them than a senior who never rides them.

That same rule says hummers & such above ATV, and obviously you can use a member owned hummer on a GT, so clearly member owned ATVs are fine & you can get reimbursed & such. HOWEVER, there SHOULD be some stiff safety regs in place if you're going to try it. Don't take any chances at all.

NV wing had a mounted unit when CAP was formed. While it no longer has a horseback unit it does have a Jeep Squadron. AFAIK they are memeber owned vehicles.  The Washoe Jeep Squadron is based in Reno NV.
