Hey, I just got the staff sergeant rank but still have about a month before my next promotion.  What special things does staff sergeant allow me to do?

It's the first NCO grade, but as far as ALLOWING you to do anything...no. You are now eligible for NCO academy, to be on flight staff at encampment (in some wings), maybe an element leader or flight sergeant in your home unit.

Prior to being promoted to C/SSgt, what do you think it "allowed" you to do?

Not to dogpile, but I just wanted to add more stuff.

It allows you to add another 0 to your paycheck.
It allows you the privilege of being called "sergeant" and not "airman"
It allows you the privilege of purchasing more grade insignia.
It allows you to purchase another ribbon.
It allows you to have the ability to possibly be called upon for more responsibility.
It allows you to have a sense of accomplishment.

Aside from 1,3, and 4, those are some good things.

It allows you to add leadership training to your followership training.
