Just an FYI

For those who have not noticed, effective 24 May 11, CAPR 50-17, para 3-4, has changed the age requirement for cadets to take the Cadet Protection Training (CPPT).  It's been changed from 18 years to 17 years.  Same requirements just age change.  Note:  CAPR 52-10, Cadet Protection does not show that change yet.

It has to be a typo – it should say within 6 months of their 18th birthday.

As written, it conflicts with 52-10 and 52-16, as well as the first sentence within the same paragraph.

If you look at the Level I page on capmembers.com, it says "(For ages 17 & older only)" next to the CPPT link but the page itself says 18. Either it's a typo in two places or NHQ/PD and NHQ/CP aren't talking very often.

I can't remember who it was, but someone told me the CPPT is required at age 18, but 17-year-olds can take it early if they want to.  Did anyone else hear the same?

That was my understanding.

Cadet promotion module is locked for a cadet the day they turn 18. You can't enter PT, tests, etc. This appears to be part of allowing cadets to take CPPT at 17 as now the have to have it at 18 to do anything toward promotion.

I tried to call cadet programs but didn't get an answer.  I'll ck back in about an hour.

Cadets must take CPPT within 6 months after their 18th birthday, or to promote before then.
It was changed recently to allow 17 year old cadets to take CPPT in order to get it completed by age 18 so it wouldn't delay promotions.
The new CAPR 50-17 must have a typo.

Don't try calling until Tuesday. They have a four day weekend at NHQ. See the announcement posted on eServices.

Cadets must take it by 18-1/2.

Cadets can take at 17-1/2.

At 17-1/2, you are legally 17.

No drama and no call necessary.

I didn't see that notice on the eServices home screen RSS feed, so.. I kinda wondered where you got it from.

I forgot what weekend this was.  Makes sense now.  Seems how cadets 17 yrs old may participate and I have two on the color guard going to NCC, I'm giving them the training just in case it's decided it's not a typo.

If they do it before 17-1/2 it's not going to count (or shouldn't, anyway).

Sounds like it's the ol' left hand, right hand thing, doesn't it?

The boys should also register for Selective Service at the same time.

You have to actually be 18 to do that.

I was a draft dodger.   I enlisted before I registered.

Me too...and wouldn't you know it...I still had to register before applying for student loans...they required the Selective Service number even though I was already prior service

I sent off an email to Nat'l today requesting a clarification as to the age requirement for cadets to take CPPT.  Heard back from one of my 17 year old cadets and he says the system let him in to take it.  So that's a good thing.

What system let him in? It's an in person discussion. CPPT is not online. The resources are there but you must sit down and discuss things with the commander.
