So yeah, I took IS 100.a yesterday and failed it.  Why?  Because I took IS 100.LE almost 2 years ago when I was a cop and decided, for whatever reason, to take the basic 100.a exam without reviewing.

Spent about 30 minutes reviewing the material and passed it today.  Then I took IS 200 and had to review a little longer, about 1 hour in order to pass that one.

My wife has to take IS 100.HC as a Public Health Specialist in the Air Guard.

I took 700 and 800 almost 2 years ago too.  Since I'm going to ICS 300 in January (found another site after my original course got moved forward to my ANG drill dates), I decided to review so I don't look like a fool.  It's amazing how if I don't use something I actually have an interest in, I can still lose the knowledge.  I mean, it's not like math, which I hate, it's Emergency Management stuff.

Bottom line, it doesn't hurt to review this stuff, especially if you're not knee deep in it on a regular basis.

I took ICS 700 & 800 right after I completed ICS 300 and ICS 400.  I thought they would be a breeze since I had just completed the more advanced courses.  Wrong....  While it looks like there is overlap in the courses, it seems the test questions concentate on the differences.

To help in your review, let me direct you to some online resources.  These are online classes that you can take to brush up before your classroom training.

THEY DO NOT TAKE THE PLACE OF THE CLASSROOM TRAINING SESSIONS!
<and they say so, right up front>   :)

They have both been designed to give students an opportunity to review before going to class, a big boost to the instructors too!

This first one is from the NFA, so it has a decidedly Fire slant to it.

You're looking for the Q464 course, ICS-300, Intermediate All-Hazard NIMS ICS Review for Expanding Incidents.

You will also notice a similar course from NFA for the IS-400 program.  Q466.  Similar deal there.

The second course is from USDA with an agricultural flavor.

I have not taken either of these courses, but I have selectively browsed both of them.

YMMV

I just looked on eServices at my 101 card (I haven't seen it since the new format), and it now says that I've got ICS100 completed, though I don't remember ever doing any of the ICS courses.  It's been so long since I've done anything ES related, I'm clueless.

I also noticed that my MRO (trainee) qualification I've had since about 2006 has a new expiration date.  It was originally supposed to be expiring back in October, but it now has an expiration date of 7/2010.  What's the deal?

To get GES we all had to take an CAP-flavor if ICS-100 direct from CAP, I believe that changed in the last couple of years and now you take them from FEMA instead.

I recall the test and the curriculum being a nightmare because it was pretty in-depth, and
the test did not correspond well to the material.  Because for a long time it was the only ICS training we ever received, it contained concepts not really needed until you progressed much higher up the food chain.

If you took GES test 116 (Part 2), it will show as IS-100 on eServices.

Got it.  Thanks!

^^ Yes, but it WILL NOT show up in the FEMA database as a completed pre-requisite for some of the advanced courses, or if you show up to a non-cap disaster and someone is actually checking credentials.

To take the FEMA ICS courses, is it really as simple as going to their website and clicking the "Take Final Exam" button (i.e. here for ICS100: http://training.fema.gov/EMIWeb/IS/is100a.asp)?  Or do you need to have pre-registered somewhere else?

That's pretty much it, although you might want to look at the material before clicking that link ;D

You mean people actually need to study before these things?   >:D

:P

Lastly, if you take the ICS courses through the FEMA site, how do they show up on your 101 card?

In NC, we forward the "Congratulations, you passed!" email to the wing ES staff, but you should check with your local ES officer for the proper procedure in your neck of the woods.

Roger - thanks!  As for that "studying" thing you mentioned, I'll have to research that!   :P
