Advisory Committee.. the old man has to buy off on it.
That's like trying to convince your dad that the Camaro is a good option .. when your 16. :)

You know that an Advisory Committee at the FDA recommended toxicity warning lables on Acetaminophen (Tylenol) in 1977...took the FDA 32 years to implement:
QuoteIn 1977, an expert panel convened by the FDA issued urgently worded advice, saying it was "obligatory" to put a warning on the drug's label that it could cause "severe liver damage." After much debate, the FDA added the warning 32 years later.

So...see ya in 3 decades or so when I can use my Kindle during takeoff.

And by then they will have been declared a terrorist device because some terrorist, somewhere, used a Kindle as part of a bomb.
So you won't be allowed to have it on the plane anyway! >:D

Anyone consistently "forget" to power-off their cell phone in CAP or GA flying?

NEVER, not me, nope.   >:D

Even when it's off. It's not off. The whole thing is ludicrous.

Ever use a tone sniffer around an iPad, phone, etc?

They're all leaking like the Titanic.

For those of us not named Jason Bourne, what did you say?  A tone sniffer sounds like something you'd find in the back of a Mad Magazine along with the x-ray glasses.

Take that on a plane.. it's great fun :)
You can find all kinds of leaking signals.

As someone who uses one of those just everyday, there's a reason there's a 60 Hz filter on the probe, floresant lights...
They also find motors and just about anything else that uses electrical power.

Don't tell me, but i'll bet that thing is either more than $20,000 or illegal for the majority of us, right?

Yeah, but a 60HZ filter wouldn't matter much on a jet where the power is 400HZ.

That exact model is $110

No...a good quality Fox and Hound/Test Tone Set will run you around $150 or so.  Depending on the bells and whistles.

It's primary purpose is to trace comm lines from the instrument to the punch down blocks and/or spice panel.

I've seen them in Home Depot, Orchard Supply Hardware and Lowes. Overpriced, but they're there.

Don't be so sure.  It's a pretty broad filter.  Not exactly a "precision instrument"!

They also work great for finding the right aircraft on the ramp.. :)
Since it will only work right up close to the source.

So when you get to the airport with someone else, "here, use this, check ELT antennas".

I never thought about that! We have 3 generator/probe sets on the shelf at work, I'll have to remember to stop by the office next beacon hunt.

If it meant that I could keep my shoes on, why not?

TSA Precheck.  Shoes on, belt on, laptop in the case.  And 3 minutes to get through security.

The only way it gets better is flying on Air Flynn.

You see that speaker on the probe?  You don't need at butt set with that.

Has anyone actually done this?

It appears A2 did, as well as some others he knows, or he would not have posted that message...

No reason it shouldn't work. I've received the audio from a nearby radio station on mine a number of times. (KFI, 50,000 watts of talk radio madness)
It's made to pick-up the signal generated by the Tone Unit being sent over phone wires.

EMT-83

Interesting. Like you, I use one every day. I've never detected an RF signal; must experiment.

Eclipse

You can usually hear cell phones ramping up just before they ring, or when they are pinging a tower - you can hear them on poorly
shielded speakers as well.

Sadly(?) the days of being able to stick a tone probe in a bunch of cables and listen in on individual voice calls has faded
as voip and digital phones have become the norm.

The Communications Act of 1934 takes a dim view on that! ;)

Apparently, according to this story and the FAA website FAQ page, it is now official (depending on the individual airline).

EDIT:  D'oh!  usafaux2004 beat me by 2 minutes!

I don't envy flight crews this morning. :)

"But the FAA says.."

In response to the "Federal regulations prohibit the use of certain electronic devices ... during critical phases of flight. .. "

It's going to force airlines to address it real soon.

Eclipse

Delta says 1 Nov for them.

http://news.delta.com/index.php?s=43&item=2152

One less thing for the flight attendants to have to say anything about.

Looks like these will need some quick director's cuts:

Virgin America Safety Video #VXsafetydance

Delta's Holiday In-Flight Safety Video

Maybe next we can address the redundancy found in "Tampering with, destroying, or disabling" in regards to smoke detectors.

"That Others May Zoom"

Now if the FAA ever bans creativity ..

funny Airplane Safety Video // never seen before

Oh, and if I end up flying before Christmas, I'm so bringing lights and a power strip, for the seat back. ;)
