This may have changed, but when I looked a few years ago the US did not recognize the sovereignty of Taiwan, which may have been a factor in this sale not happening.

The relationship with Taiwan is very complicated. The US certainly provides military assistance (platforms and training, for a price), but the formal label is such that we maintain a good economic basis with mainland China.
