Also as a new member with no rating, can I order the patch without the wings from Vanguard? I couldn't find it on their site.

disamuel:

When I ordered mine I just left the "aeronautical rating" box blank, filled in my name and rank, and that worked. I have heard of people getting them with wings and covering them up with tape until the Form 5 etc., clears to save money... but I will have to change it out when I get my butter bar anyway so I went the correct route... plus I'm not a fan of tape.

I agree, this is not a big issue at all.  It would just be nice for CAP ASNP's to have the standard configuration found on most USAF ASNP's (i.e. what is depicted in pic 1).

What CAP could also do (with AF approval) is wear the ASNP with only the name and aeronautical rating.  That is also very common in the AF.

It makes sense, too; officers wear rank insignia on the flight suit already, so having it printed on the ASNP is a little redundant.  Now, for airmen and NCO's it is mandatory, because their rank insignia is not worn on the flight suit.  Same deal with cadets.

And if it seems like I am some sort of uniform nazi or like-minded individual, I'm not; this is the only place I bring up uniform ideas and suggestions.  I know that the mission is more important than the uniform, and that's why I keep mum about uniform stuff in public.

Hey CCSE:   Maybe because you're not a member of CAP, or maybe it's because you're not a member of the Air Force, but pretty much every ASNP I've seen in both CAP and with our USAF and ANG personnel here in the tiny state of New York have the second version you showed.

Just because you've seen in done that way on TV or "that's th' way they do it 'round here" doesn't mean that the other way is wrong.

We have enough problems with people spouting off their opinion and observations as fact or universal truth, when in fact, it's not.

I posted that over a month ago.

You are acting on the assumption that I have the same view on this that I did in March.

Stop assuming.

Here we go again.  I placed an order yesterday called for a status today and I love what they were telling me.  :

I won't recieve the order for 3-5 days once it's shipped; and I paid for over-night shipping.  Supposedly she didn't see that on the screen.

Also I specificed to send the items as they became available.  She said that won't happen it all has to be shipped at once.  Luckily I some how talked her into getting the entire order completed either today or tomorrow including the personalizing.

Last time I ordered from vanguard, the shipping charges were like 7 bucks, for a 3 dollar item.  I canceled my order, and refuse to buy from them!  Having to bunch orders together with other people to save on shipping charges is outrageous.  They are making money off the shipping, and no one can tell me any different.

[darn] Vanguard, and their terrible business practices.

When the envelope shows up via USPS and the stamp says $0.72 you know they are...it's irritating.

I got real upset with the girl, and offered to send Vanguard an envelope and a stamp so they could ship me my order in my own packaging.  That is when she said "oh, seriously, we can't do that"......then I said, "cancel it all".

From reading these posts, I realize that a lot of folks are having troubles with Vanguard.  I have just about all the uniforms that I want, so I don't deal with them very often, but I did recently order some stuff.  The results were GREAT.  I ordered three of the latest version command patch, a Korea Service Ribbon and one of the much-maligned blue polo shirts with embroidered name and wings.  The site says 10 business days for the shirt.  I received the whole deal in one small Fed Ex box in about five days, order complete and correct.  The third day after I made the order, I received an email saying that my order had shipped.

BTW: the polo is made of a much different material than the four others that I have: I must say that it is a great improvement.  I know, I know, you uniform purists will scald that one.

Can't complain about any of that.

It seems strange that this firm, Vanguard, supplies something like 90% of the insignia to the US Armed Forces and yet it causes CAP Officers and Cadets such grief.

Aside from several backordered items, I have had no major problems with them.

^ Yes, true they supply a lot to the military, but usually through the MCSS.  It is real easy to pull a Vanguard item off a rack at the MCSS, and not pay outrageous shipping charges!  Plus, returns are handled right there in the store.  All of my Army insignia are Vanguard products, because they are by far the best quality (better than AAFES "Exchange Best" items, and "Sta-Brite" junk)

Now, some things I would not get from Vanguard because their quality varies, such as the name and branch tapes.

I still recommend that everyone order from AAFES.  Call your orders in, shipping is free, and the customer service is awesome! (note: only items shared with the military services are available through AAFES, and the Army black windbreaker, and Army black All Weather Coat are cheaper through AAFES than through Vanguard).

...

Actually, there is a new trial program underway.  An RFID chip in the red insignia boxes detects if you are a CAP member, charges you additional shipping, and tracks you by GPS if you do not pay the additional shipping charge immediately.

What gets me is;  by ordering on the phone, shipping charges are somewhat realistic.  Ordering on-line makes a $10 order ridiculous.  I usually wait until a wing/region or annual national conf. to get stuff from Vanguard.  I go to MCSS for uniform items. (l love getting socks for less than buying them at the dollar store  ;D)

I thought we were supposed to get the Navy CPO/Officer windbreaker.  The Army version has a different type of collar.

MIKE

The Army has two versions... The officer version has the knit collar like the Navy version.

Then there are two versions of the Officer windbreaker, one is bi-swing, the other is flat back.  Same price for both, I recommend the bi-swing.
