Title: CAP Talk Suggestion
Post by: Stonewall on December 08, 2007, 05:53:26 PM
Hey kids, you know I love you and think you guys do an excellent job of hosting this site.  Kudos and "hooahs" to you all.

Just thought of an idea that you may or may not like.  Either way, I won't know unless I say something.

You know all the files that people graciously upload for us as resources, like Chuck Corway's Guide to wearing CAP ribbons, well, perhaps there could be a specifc forum area for such resources.  Not that my stuff was the be all to CAP[/b] but I had posted some guides, OPORD samples, and such a few months back and they have since been knocked down several pages back.  Maybe, just maybe we could have an area to keep them all in one place.

Or, is it too much for this former grunt to realize that it would take up to much bandwidth or something?

Semper Vi.

And seriously, I truly appreciate you guys hosting this site.

Personally, I think that would be awesome. I try to download as many of those things that I find useful as soon as possible before they disappear into old pages. Having all of the guides and such in one location, or at least links to the thread they're in, would be awesome.

If a new resources section were added to the forum it could conceivably have the exact same problem you seek to address by creating it, or it could be nearly dead... It all depends on activity.

As the site exists now there is some issue with sticky management.  You don't want a forum where half or all of the first page of topics are stickied or pinned topics... Really you dont... I've seen it, it ain't pretty.

Heh, half a page of sticky posts? Those forums are run by micromanagement freaks .. and usually blow chunks.

A file area could simply be structured with the same names as the forum sub topics. Inside each, a file directory by alphabetical or date, user selectable. Drop the stuff in there and either:

Leave it named as it was when uploaded.
Leave it named as uploaded plus add a prefix to the filename, "GES, MO, MS, CAPR116", etc.
Come up with a nomenclature.

Don't get all into who uploaded/contributed/etc. Let that information be in the document.

I've done this sort of thing and my own CAP stuff is setup in a similar way. I've done file library stuff in many forums in the pst, too.

I'm sure that there is a way to set up a new tab with a file library.  I just don't know how to do it.   ???

So who's going to volunteer to program such a beast?  You're going to need to have a file management piece, with uploading capability, moderating/administrative abilities to control files, directory size, approve and remove uploads, etc., build a user interface, etc.

There's DOCman for Joomla, or it could be WordPress with a download manager and the blog engine could be used to announce files.

..the pixels got pushed right off that portal dude.. thats all.

Yes, I can attest to truth of that statement, but if that was affection you were showing me in my post about the reactions I got while walking around Chicago in uniform, I would hate to see you angry. I would also hate to see what might have happened if I had been wearing camo bdus instead of my khaki ODUs.

I'm not computer savvy enough to learn the technical terms as to how things run, especially on a website. So if I use the wrong term, I apologize. Would it take up too much bandwidh by adding another section for members to upload CAP related photos?
