Title: Only one uniform

If you could have only one uniform, which one would it be?  ???

Flight suit.  Total chick magnet.

The blue polo (embrodiered seal/name) and grey slacks  -- the only true "functional" uniform that I like to wear.  All the others are nice (USAF Style, BDU, Blazer combo, Flight Suit, Mess Dress --- closet is full of them) .... but it is the one I am most "comfortable" in.

I'm with you Major John!

At 45 years old I need all the help I can get!  When I wear the Flight Suit, the gals are coming to me like I was a rock star!

They love to touch it!

Minimum Basic Service Uniform

I concur, the Minimum Basic Service Uniform is just a shirt and trousers....no biggie.

If I were limited to just one uniform (combo) it would be as followed...

1) Flight CAP, one service cap (for formal functions)
2) 1 Short and 1 Long blue USAF Shirt
3) tie (for formal functions)
4) two pair of trousers...(on efor when the other is at the cleaners)
5) 1 belt, two buckles (an heir and a spair)
6) rank epaulets (three pair, one for the long/short sleeve, one for the service coat and one for the light weigth blue jacket)
7) one light weigth blue jacket
8) one service coat
9) necessary items like proper shoes, name plates, ribbons etc.

Disabled smileys - MIKE

I would begin with the Minimum Basic Service Uniform, and augment it up to service dress over time and as money allows.

Minimum Basic Service Uniform can be, with a stretch, multi-functional (as could be said of the golf shirt combo)...base staff, flying and limited ground team could wear  it.  I mean, paramedics/police  wear something similar when they are on the beat.

I will point out this is said in idea non-usual REDCAP/SARex conditions.  One would/should still need a field uniform and maybe a flight suit.  However, I'm sure all would agree that it is easier to justify a Minimum Basic Service Uniform in the field than a set of BDUs or a flight suit at some indoor semi-formal affair.

Hummm...  I will need to think more on this.

One might envision a uniform that had the properties of both.  Maybe made of a field friendly material...like a khaki?  In the relative style of an easy Minimum Basic Service Uniform...but be redressed with certain functional features.

It could be laundered and pressed and dressed (ribbons et al) for a semi-formal, but serve well in the field.

Imagine that, one uniform.  I brought that up at the Portal once.  It needs work as an idea or likely is unworkable...but this is a flight of fancy anyways...

I can't believe no one has said BDU's. Sure, maybe change the design of most of the wing patches and have all subdued colors on all your patches, then you look much better. But even without that, throw a boonie hat on, and your good to go. Maybe even make that an OD green beret like the Swamp Rats of our unit did.

Other than that uniform I would say the MARPAT or whatever new marine woodland camo uniform. That it some good stuff they got.

And it would also be wierd trying to be in the field with a dress uniform or flight suit. And as far as attracting chicks in flight suits, the only thing in the field to attract are bears. =)

A good choice.  I own several pair including a "going out" pair.  My next set will be Spartan with the minimal regalia.

I was working from a "Universal Uniform" point of view, that is, if I had to get one uniform for all the functions I do in CAP.

Mess Dress.  All day, every day.

If James Bond can do all these crazy things out in the field, and still look good - by golly, we can change the oil in our planes, trek through swamps looking for ELTs, and work an airshow wearing a tux, too.

People would certainly take note of us.   :D

Granted....but all those gals who you wished "could be California girls" back in the day (Beach Boys copyright infringement there) got married, had kids, and got "established" upon a another class of workers so they wouldn't have to move around all that much.

You do the math and you know what that adds up to.....   :-X

Sigh......except for the occasional specimen, those days have passed.

A pair of 1620s and a pair of 1625s is probably a good idea if you need two pair and have service dress.  If you don't have service dress, then the wash and wear 1625s would be ideal.

My other basic uniform of choice would be Tropical Blue Long with the garrison cap and windbreaker.

That's sort of what I've been implying the whole time.........just perhaps a bit too subtly.  :P

As much a fact, most of the lady-type SMs I know are about 50+ years old.........and this would NOT be becoming on them (likely, by their own admission.)

OK, you guys can take the Star Wars armor. I might be a good laugh in between the deaths of my entire ground team. Making poncho boats or fording would be a new level of excitment as you get pulled under and try to run on the bottom of the river trying to get to the other side before you drown. Go through a sink hole with them on, all the edges on the armor would catch the weeds and you could not pull yourself out. Other than that, it doesn't look like the material breaths well.

Back to the topic.

If we really HAD to have only one uniform, it would be BDUs.  Or more specifically Blue BDUs.

Reasons

1.  We can perform the vast majority of our functions (ES, most of CP, flying stuff, squadron meetings, AE except mebbe some museum trips).

2.  We CAN'T perform anywhere near that number of missions in any service dress or flight suit.

3.  USAF won't let all our our members wear woodland BDUs.

A fall back position, less likely to piss off our members, is Woodland OR Blue BDUs.

I think CAP makes a mistake by making the minimum CAP uniform a service dress combo - since you end up HAVING to buy BDUs if you're gonna do much more than come to meetings.  And yet we could do meetings in the BDUs.

Better to mandate the work suit first, and the bring in the dressy suit later.

I disagree, to only a small degree.  Every organization I have ever been in has had a "button closing shirt and trousers," gold shirt, as its minimum uniform.  It's formal enough for ceremonials and, if EMS and Police Officer can make due with it in the field, works in the field.

BDU type suits for certain occasion suggests "wacked out militia."

Notice I said I only disagreed to a small degree.  My position is that both a Field uniform and short sleeve service dress be basic to all CAP members, if not some multi purpose outfit that could serve as both a field and service uniform.  A tactical bdu shirt/pants combo that a service jacket could be slipped over for real formal events?

Yeah, as a "multi purpose suit" the BDUs don't work - they are a field suit.

But the questions is - do the vast majority of CAP members ever really need a service suit?

After all, the military is now wearing utility uniforms every day, and it doesn't both them much.  In the last 3 years, I've worn Class A's about 3 times - once to a conference and twice for official photos.  Heck, I've seen folks testify in front of congress in BDUs/ACUs.  My friend in USAF recently had a dining-in in BDUs.  Most CAP ceremonies would look fine with everyone in BDUs.

If the goal is minimal cost for our members, a utility uniform as the mandatory suit makes the most sense.  Perhaps something could be crafted that could be "dressed up" a bit, but given what we have in the inventory today the simple choice is BDUs.

I believe that USAF would refer to our basic minimum uniform as "short sleeve service dress"  CAP doesn't seem to have a term for that combination, so I was using "service dress" to mean all possible combinations of that suit, with and without the jacket.

Sorry for any confusion.

Maybe not one uniform. Two could certainly do it. BBDU and Service Dress Cass "A" and "B".

Going completely minimalist, the BDU/BBDU would work.  Especially after the AF goes to the ABU and we follow suit.  The Army is doing away with all uniforms except the ACU and the Dress Blues for formal occasions Once the AF goes to the ABU, they may do the same.  It wil be BDU or BBDU, if not ACU, or we will look AFU.

... I have always believed that if we can't look like the Air Force  (or military in general), then we should look like firefighters or EMTs because of our Emergency Services heritage.

OR like teachers because of our Aerospace Education heritage?

One of my first jobs in private security was undercover investigating internal loss at a government contractor in Michigan.  I literally worked in a cubicle and the guys there watched that movie religiously!

Did you have a swingline stapler? I would say about 3 in 5 cadets know what I am takling about when I say they don't have enough flare on their uniforms! ( Most of our cadets have at least 17 pieces of flare) [darn] it feels good to be a gangsta!

I actually know a guy that did! Red and everything! He bought it from some place online and made a big deal of it when it got there!

Now how many of us wish we can do what they did to the fax machine?

Iowa State has a fraternity that throws old electronics off a balcony as a fund raiser.

Quite cool to see a computer monitor blow apart after 50 feet of unrestricted gravitational pull.

I do that from the third floor sometimes, but it seems to annoy the neighbors.
