Title: Aviator shirt ribbons
Post by: AirDX on February 11, 2020, 09:54:59 PM
BITD, the reg said one might wear "all, some, or none" of authorized CAP ribbons on the aviators shirt. Now, I've been gone for a while, and the new current reg doesn't contain that verbiage. It does specify all must be worn on certain USAF combos, but leaves me scratching my head WRT the aviator shirt. Any clarity out there? I like to short stack, and just wear one row, a top 3.

39-1 states that ribbons are optional with the aviator uniform. I take that to mean all, some, or none.

It appears to be whatever ones you want, as long as they are in the right order.  The "none" option doesn't cover the service coat but can't find where it says wearing everything is required.  For some of us that isn't even possible.

On the topic of aviator shirts, what size do you recommend for aircrew wing badge?

I wear the smaller size of both GT and MO badges.

CAPR 39-1, Page 116:
https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/media/cms/CAPR_039_001_5_Mar_2020__6EA485E9593C8.pdf

"11.1.2.1. Senior Member Officers and NCOs. When ribbon wear is mandatory,
members may wear all or some of their authorized ribbons."

Ergo when "not mandatory" it's dealer's choice.

This is the same policy as always with slightly different verbiage.

Thanks for the reply. Why the smaller? Does it just look better?

I wear the larger. As prior mil, the smaller ones look off. But it's purely personal preference.

I wear the smaller aircrew and ground team badges on the aviator or blues shirt, and the full size on the service coat.

Looks better, doesn't weigh down the shirt.

I wear mini A/C & GBD.

I think that's because they are smaller, but the scale is off.  Our small insignia seem to be extra small, in some you can't really make out the details.

That being said, Large or small are fine but for the love of all that is good and evil, if you wear multiple, keep them the same.  Two Large or two small, don't interchange them

Personal preference - yes, I think it looks better.

I wear the mini wings or qual badges. It's less ostentatious (also why I wear top 3 ribbons, not all) and lighter. That said, I think if you wear a single set of wings or a qual badge above your left pocket and nothing else, the full size looks better. Dealer's choice, as noted above. Once COVID relaxes a bit, I'm going to be going to meetings with non-CAP entities, and I will likely wear the white shirt to try to look good. I'm going to order a full sized set of senior observer wings, and just wear the minimum - rank slides, name tag, wings. Much easier than spending half an hour pinning on name tag, two specialty badges, ribbons, and two sets of wings.

As mentioned above though, dealer's choice.

I've seen a mix of mini aeronautical, and full size occupational badge, and always kind of liked the way it looked.

The aeronautical badge doesn't look so "in your face" and overriding the occupational badge.

I tried using minis on the shirt but went back to full-size.  Something about the larger CAP nametag versus the shorter AF one makes it look "off" to me.

The CAP small insignia is the same size the Air Force small insignia used to be.
The Air Force changed the size of their small insignia about 15 years ago to the size it is now.
CAP didn't change theirs.

Are the current USAF insignia smaller or larger than current CAP insignia?

AF and CAP Wings are approx the same size both Large and Small.

Large size insignia, AF = 1-5/8" Wide, CAP = 1-1/8" Wide
Small size insignia, AF(old) = 13/16" Wide, AF(new) = 1-1/4" Wide, CAP = 3/4" Wide
AF insignia measured was a Basic Aircraft and Munitions Maintenance Badge
CAP Insignia measured was a Basic Ground Team Badge.

All of the AF Occupational Badges are approx the same size.
The CAP Badges have no standard shape or size.
