The mess hall is extra. They include a couple of eating events in the schedule, but 95% of it is on you. The mess hall at Nellis was pretty high on the scale of similar establishments for us. :) ..and convenient, too.

As for transportation, they'll work it out with you. No worries there.

capmaj

As a2capt says, the meals are extra. But the Dining Facility will only run you 4-5 dollars for a full meal. There is a large food court at the BX area, but the meals are obviously going to cost you a bit more than at the dining facility. Quite often the individual seminar groups will meet at the Club at night and get food there while they work on their projects. Remember to save your meals receipts for tax purposes.

Transportation from the airport is provided in a CAP van. You will receive an info packet upon registration that will have a transportation info sheet included. You list your airines and arrival/departure times and arraingments are made for a pick-up.

If you have a CAP license, be sure to bring it as the Directors MUST see the license in order to allow you to drive a van for your group, if desired. They will not simply take someones word that they have a license due to liabilty reasons.

Also double check that you have a current CAP ID before travelling. You will be required to show that and possibly a drivers licence in order to get on Base.

Hmmm.

Southwest Airlines SLC to LAS Round Trip $162.40 out on the evening of the 20th, return morning of 28th.
Registration fees $80
Lodging 8 x $40 = $320
On Base Food ???
Travel from LAS to Nellis ???

Can anybody help with the ??? items?  Is the school or the base running a van to LAS?  Does the room fee include meals or is there an additional fee for the cafeteria?

RSC will usually send someone to meet you at the airport (that's why they want you to provide flight arrival information). It's about 15-20 miles from KLAS to KLSV (McCarran to Nellis). You will not need a POV during RSC. At the end of the course, arrangements will be made to transport you back to McCarran. As mentioned before, seminars will be assigned a CAP van; most everyone will get together for breakfast or lunch and drive to the usual on-base eateries. If you want to extend your visit to Sin City after RSC, you can probably make arrangements to have them drop you off at your hotel/casino.

Rooms do not include meals; if you're assigned to the Warrior Inn, you're a short walk from the Shoppette and the BX mall (Shoppette is open 24 hours). A little longer walk will get you to Booger Kink - ahem, Burger King - and Poopeye's - ahem, Popeye's. If you're assigned to the main VOQ (Nellis Inn), it's a short walk to the Crosswinds Inn dining hall. (Note: there are two chow halls on base; one (Mountain View Inn) is open only during Red Flag/Green Flag evolutions.) VOQ rooms include an iron and ironing board.

If you eat at the chow hall (or DFAC for youse newbies... I'm old-school former Air Force), the food is charged a la carte (every food item is charged an individual price); you should not be paying more than about $5, including surcharges, except if they have a special meal, where it might be a little more. Nellis is one of the few stateside bases that is staffed by military food service personnel. The food court at the BX has options for all tastes: Charley's, Anthony's Pizza, Taco Bell, Manchu Wok, Captain D's, among others. Since you are on a military installation you pay no sales taxes, but prices are comparable to eateries outside the wire.

Edited to add: there is a dry cleaners on base but they do not have fast service. There may be a quicker service dry cleaners off base but the highly-structured atmosphere of RSC may not allow you to leave the immediate area. Decent military clothing sales store; access through the main BX is available (self-service) after the MCSS doors close at 1700 until the main BX closes.

I'm very strongly considering attendance.

I had to cancel out of this year's NERSC almost literally at the last minute due to a family emergency that basically owned me for about a month.

How many 2009 grads do we got on here???

I'm with the other guys.  It was a great experience.  The CAPTalker's wife that someone previously mentioned was in my seminar group.  Some of the finest CAP officers that I have ever had the priviledge of working with I met at the PRSC.

Quick note....  stay away from the O-club unless you are really ready to party....  Those young AF pilots will drink you under the table every time....

For those who can't afford the plane ticket, there is always the bus or train.  I took a bus to get there and it wasn't too bad of a drive.  It was also good for my check book.....

PRSC was great.....As for the O'Club....we worked on our group project there and had a great time...the night we were there was fairly quiet.

Chow is very reasonable...breakfast only ran about $3, lunch $3-4 and I splurged on dinner spending about $6 for a feast. A BBQ the first night was free as was the awards luncheon in the o'club (included in registration).

You'l enjoy the Thunderbirds, the Petty Zoo (Threat facility), Red Flag (bring money for Red Flag memorabilia).  If Red Flag is going at the time, there will be a zillion planes taking off/landing. If Green Flag is going there is still alot of activity. And of course Weapons School will probably be going so that adds to it all.
If you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything.

Taking a bus to Las Vegas might be interesting ... but taking one out could be even more ;)
I had planned to fly myself, but it became clear that the weather that day of travel was a bit dicey wind wise over the desert, and the longterm forecast was actually what made me hit the freeway instead.  ...and it turned out for the better. It was low level ice and rain on the way back.

There is NO Amtrak service to Las Vegas! Hasn't been for about 15 years now.

No but there is one to Kingman Arizona...they will provide a bus for the Three+ hour ride...Ugh...I'd rather fly especially for the price

a2capt

Heh, yeah- the California Zephyr to Kingman .. and a bus.. the bus would be about as long as the flight from most of the continent.

We graduated the 2012 class at PRSC yesterday. Simply put, it exceeded all of my expectations and would do it again in a heart beat.
