I'm about to acquire a used UTStarcom XV6700 on the VZW network running WinMobile 5.0. I'm getting it so I can retire my venerable M130 Palmpilot.

I use my M130 as a check register and mobile document viewer. It also has some navigation calculators I've added.

What software would you recommend for my new phone to aid with my CAP duties? I'd also like to know if anyone can suggest a good piece of checkbook software for it ;). I was already intending to use mobile office to help me track the rocket program and was going to carry a complete set of regs. Does this work on WinMobile 5.0?

This is my first smartphone so go easy on me ;D

The first thing I would look at is to see if you can upgrade to Winmobile 6.0.

As far as checkbook software, if you use software on your computer such as quicken or microsoft money there are mobile versions of these that you can load on your phone and sync between the two.

I was a Winmob user for several years (prob about 4+) - if you paid attention last Spring you would have seen a well-worn MDA in my hand almost 24x7, it was my second of the same device.  I switched to a G1 running Android around July and wouldn't consider going back, however MS still has plenty of life in it.

Note, many of these apps require a robust (i.e. unlimited) data plan to be really useful.

Most of the streams here will work on WinMob: http://www.thestreamcenter.com/pda/callsign.asp?state=IN&client=

I agree that if you can get your phone upgraded to WinMob 6 its worth it, but be careful
of "cooked" ROMS - they can be very useful, but some are not stable.

Does that phone have bluetooth?  If so, see if it can interface with a BT GPS.  I have one which I have no use for and will send it to you for the cost of postage.

And here's what you've won (rest via PM).

There is no official WM6 update for the phone. All I can find are cooked ROMS. I won't be getting a data plan for it but it does have WIFI that I can use.
