Why don't we have any IT sub-forums?

Something for people to get advice/help on their squadron's site or computers. Or a review of the site...

The ES guys have their thing, the uniform Nazis have theirs, the AE guys, the pilots, the CP guys... Why is IT the odd man out?

There is the Tools of the Trade section. There isn't enough activity to warrant a separate board.

The IT specialty track isn't the odd man out.  Most of the support functions do not have subforums.  We only create subforums after there's an established interest and participation in those types of topics.  If we see there are several hundred posts on a topic, it's a good sign it needs its own category.  If there's only the occasional post, it just doesn't warrant a new section.  We've already got a few sections that are fairly slow and quiet.

So if I start posting all sorts of relevant IT stuff you may open a section?

The key word is relevant! Random IT stuff copied and pasted will just get deleted if it doesn't explicitly apply to CAP. Good luck, I don't think there are enough ITOs here to support it.

So IT stuff that will affect CAP sites. CAP computers, or anything CAP...

So if I can justify how it will affect CAP IT, I can post it?

Generic IT stuff will be deleted.  But discussions about CAP specific things like maybe how you use the CAPWATCH database to set up user accounts on a laptop to be used during meetings or missions.  Or a set of programs you keep on a flash drive to quickly set up a new user account to be useful at a mission (I used to always have a copy of OpenOffice ready to install, along with IrfanView, FileZilla and Google Earth).   Or maybe how you designed the network security policy at your wing HQ.  Or what your "infosec" and "opsec" protocols are for your unit webpage.   Generic stuff like apache patches or rumors about anonymous attacking the DNS root servers are just generic IT and not the kind of stuff people come here for.

It seems you anticipated my next move, my good sir!  :D

So an acceptable IT topic is how-to guides? (relevant to CAP IT)

I represent that remark!  (there is nothing more dangerous than an engineer with a screwdriver, pocket protector, slide rule and the Admin password!)

I bow to your knowledge, jks19714.  I worked with you a smidgen when DEWG was playing with the 900mhz modems.  Wish I had your office :)

900 milliHertz modems? Those must have been really, really slow!

You've never worked in the 333,333,333m band?

There used to be national IT forums.
They were a ghost town.

I don't think they are even online anymore.
