Network hiccups at the sooper sekrit location where the CadetStuff server resides. I had the same problem, both last night and this morning. Seems like the subnet that the CadetStuff server resides on is unreachable, for whatever reason.
I suspect the box itself is happily running, wondering where all the traffic is. :)
I agree with the person I just sent this too... this should so be illegal.
But, bestest of luck to whoever is in charge of fixing this :-)
The official scoop: The hardware that hosts CadetStuff (and a variety of other web sites) was moved behind a firewall this morning, unbeknownst to us. They refuse to move the box outside of the firewall.
So, our heroic sys admin Dano (not to be confused with that dirty bum Dano that deleted the forum posts last year) worked his tail off to move all the web sites hosted on that hardware to another piece of hardware that is outside the firewall.
Everything is done, no data was lost since the server was running along just fine the whole time. We're just waiting for the DNS servers to catch up. Give it another 2-24 hours depending on your ISP and you should be square.
Sorry for the inconvenience, it caught us by surprise, too!
Well, on the bright side, maybe the short downtime at CadetStuff will encourage some people to check out CAPTalk and some of the other CAP Blogs and websites out there. ;)
Well - one can hope, right? ;D
It's back up! :)

And CAPTalk traffic falls dramatically. ;)
Yeah... That was implied. CAPTalk is cool though. ;)
I think it's down again. I'm getting some kind of critical error page. It went down when I was browsing threads... When I went to log out I got the error.

Yep. Our traffic is always up when CS is down. ;D
Looks like it's a problem with one of the tables and they've got the forums in Debug mode (attempting to fix it).
It doesn't look like the kind of error that would erase any post data, so shouldn't be any significant worries. I'm sure it'll be back in due time. In the meantime, enjoy the new flow of traffic to CAPTalk. :D
it'll be easy to fix, don't worry, it's only a minor problem.

Famous last words? ;D
this error happens a lot with the configuration that CS uses, but they can usually stop it before it gets this far.
Now watch, within the next few hours, the CS staff will be announcing the Great Data Dump, Part 3.
jk, lol

Well, looks like CS has been having DNS problems all day. I'm surprised the CAPtalk traffic-o-meter isn't pegged to the limit today. ;)

Yeah... And you took down the Flying Min so I can't get my Tetris fix anymore. :)
Yes, not to be confused with providing quality CAP content, Flying minutemen satisfied old-school arcade game fixes. :)
It's true, the CadetStuff server is alive and well, but the nameserver (which resolves 'cadetstuff.org' to an IP address) is down and out.
Our DNS dude is on vacation, so it's taking us a little longer than normal to track him down.
Unfortunately, the best I can say is that it will be back when it's back. Fortunately, it's just a DNS problem, and not a problem with the actual server or site software.
Unfortunately, DNS is indeed down, and our DNS guru with the keys to the kingdom is off on vacation! (Alright, who authorized that?)
He'll be back on Monday, and we'll be all fixed up. And I suspect we'll have some additional DNS redundancy in the next week or so...

Sorry, Chris, the IP won't do you any good. There is enough virtual hosting going on that machine that just the IP will get you a nice fuzzy screen that says what machine it is, but nothing else. :(
NIN
I can go to the main page. Can anyone else?
Negatory.
Maybe I can get on it because the comuter has it in its memory. I just can't get on to the forum or anything else.
Yea i think its your computer. I cant get on it at all.
Yeah, your right its my computer.
I've made two posts today with no responses. Kinda weird/boring.

Let me know what your old user name is, and I will change the E-mail address and reset your password (I'm "skyhawk" on CadetStuff). PM me here, and I'll fix your account there.

Yeah, it is down again. Oy vey.
Although, I know after their last DNS incident, CS was going to sack their old method of DNS hosting (*cough*Ninness' Home*cough*) and get a real DNS host. Perhaps this is just the transition from old to new DNS and it's taking time for the new DNS info to propagate.

IIRC the DNS issue does not originate from NINs AO... Somewhere further south in the AO of a mutual acquaintance of NIN and yours truly. ;D
Figures... It had to die on me when I was posting to the Wiki. :o

Apparently Sir Robin's minstrels caused quite a gastrointestinal upset. Perhaps if we give the'Stuff the little purple pill it will come back.
Or maybe a shrubbery...
Just think of the down time as CadetStuff's way of helping you fight your CadetStuff addiction.
This community service annoucement has been brought to you by the number 3 and the letter Q.

That would be an oh-far-too-pleasant of a diversion right about now.
Today's outage seemed to be DNS related, but the outage on Saturday was related to the routes to our host being hosed up someplace in Chicago and totally out of our control. Today's hiccup could have been related. I wasn't in a place to be able to tell much.
I was at home Saturday & could not tracert to the site, but from a Level3 diagnostic tool, from DC I could see it and my home. Same with NY, Boston, etc. But try to route thru Chicago, as it appeared my packets were trying to, and forget it! They fell off the grid on a Sprintlink hop someplace, never to be seen again.
I thought TCP/IP was supposed to be "catatstrophic loss of node" tolerant? Guess not!

And for those without the pi-shaped "geek chromosome"... the layman's explanation:
DNS: Domain Name system (... or service, server)-
It's like a Star Wars Protocol Droid, that among speaking Bocce, also translates website URLS into numbers the computer world can understand, and vice versa.
Continuing on with the geeky and poor Star Wars analogy, DNS'3PO' takes the website URL we give him and translates it into blippity-beepity numbers his R2 unit friend can understand.
And with a curt insult and a smack to the rusty innards of the R2 unit, the little droid displays a fine looking website in his holographic projector.
such as this one... (http://www.civilairman.com/imgs/impstuff/index.html)
Now, say the DNS'3PO' droid comes across an angry bunch of ugnaughts who wish to disassemble him and send him down the conveyor for scrap...
well, you have what happened to CadetStuff recently. :)
Ok, well that was still nerdy, wasn't it?
Tedd, you owe me a keyboard. ;)
