Good afternoon all

Id like to introduce myself my name is Thomas and I am stationed here at Edwards AFB. I am really interested in joining the CAP. I am serving as an active duty A1C in the Air Force working on computers. I wanted to join CAP not ony to give back to the community but to teach others and learn from them also. What is the best way of going about things? What happens if I join and I am serving active duty? Also I have a love for aviation, so is CAP a good place to learn and teach aviation? Are there "jobs" where I can be in the plane also? Thank you so much sorry about all the question! Also does anyone know about the squadrons around Edwards? Are they all still active?

It's a wonderful journey to embark on.

I suggest you start with some squadron visits and tell them the same that you stated here. Look up the nearest squadron at www.gocivilairpatrol.com

Good luck to you and continue to ask your questions!

There will likely be some complimentary things between your USAF and CAP service, but for the most part
they will be separate, and CAP is done on your own time after hours.

If you're AD and get deployed, you can either "do what you can from your new location", join a unit in the
area you're deployed (not everyone gets deployed outside the CONUS), or simply not do much until you
get back.  Your membership dues go on hiatus when deployed in the military.

There are at least two aircrew jobs that don't require you to be a pilot - Mission Scanner (GIB) who acts as
left-side eyes, photographer, and other misc jobs, and Mission Observer (essentially mission commander)
who runs the mission comms, navigation, search planning, etc.  There are also specialist rating on top of those
which open new opportunities if they are available in your area.

If you have knowledge of aerospace topics, there is always a need for instructors in that area,

Bottom line, someone with a military background can find plenty of opportunities that either compliment
their chosen field, or that are 180 off (as something different).
