Please visit www.cadetsurvivalschool.org for more information.  Dates and location have just been announced.

From the CSS Site:

CSS is an activity like no other. Last year's students were privileged to participate in a week-long course that stretched both their mental and physical limits. Classes were taught on such subjects as disaster preparation, basic aspects of fieldcraft, water confidence, and the "survivor mentality." Students spent a significant amount of time living in the field, and were able to practice rappelling and shooting during the course of the week.

CSS is NOT for the faint of heart. Participants are expected to behave like adults, as self-sufficiency and responsibility are two aspects that the course strives to impart to students. Students make real choices about how they will keep themselves and their team in good condition while surmounting real-world challenges put before them by instructors.

CSS is also not a wilderness survival course.  Indeed, students are expected to arrive with a basic knowledge of how to take care of themselves for 24-48 hours in the field.  While some fieldcraft may be taught at CSS, the school's philosophy is that students are not likely, in this day and age, to find themselves lost in the woods.  We want students to be able to handle themselves calmly and professionally during any emergency--from finding themselves at the scene of an auto accident to finding themselves stuck in their house without power after a snowstorm.

The instructor cadre at CSS is top-flight. Last year, students had the opportunity to learn from individuals with a wide variety of experience in both military and civilian sectors.  Staff included several officers and enlisted members of the USAF (including two pilots and an aircrew member), a civilian government contractor with experience in nuclear force protection, and military and civilian medics.

Yep.  And possibly Tom Culpepper.  Remember him?  Former cadet of mine turned PJ.
Serving since 1987.

Yeah, I remember Tom from when he was your DCC at Fairfax...not to mention the spotlight on him the Volunteer Magazine.

Please give this announcement the widest possible distribution.

Who: CAP Cadets who want to do something incredible this summer

What: Cadet Survival School is a series of cadet program activities designed to teach students how to survive emergencies by training them to think clearly and react correctly in time-critical high stress situations so they can save themselves and aid others.

When: 17-25 July 2010

Where: Maryland

Why: Because you won't live long enough to make a shelter if you never get out of the burning wreckage.

Cost: To be determined (expect less than $300 for the main Intermediate Course), students will be responsible for their travel arrangements to and from the activity, and equipment.

How to learn more: Visit www.CadetSurvivalSchool.org

Discussion:
Maryland Wing will be hosting the 2010 iterations of Cadet Survival School. We expect to run a Basic Course in the early summer, and the Intermediate and Advanced Courses from 17-25 July.

2010 Course Offerings:

BASIC SKILLS COURSE
Description: The Basic Course (BC) is intended for cadets with no outdoors or survival training experience. It is a weekend long and covers the fundamentals of wilderness survival such as food, water, fire, and shelter procurement. This is a low induced stress course (comparable to a basic cadet airman school). Date and Location will be announced.

INTERMEDIATE COURSE (Maryland 17-25 July)
Description: The primary course that Cadet Survival School (CSS) runs is the week-long summer Intermediate Course (IC). This course is designed to take students beyond fundamentals of wilderness survival and into a new understanding of how to handle the chaos and friction of the first (and most dangerous) minutes of an emergency. The Intermediate Course also focuses on more contemporary threats to survival such as terrorist attacks, school shootings, street crime, mass casualty incidents, and rough water emergencies. The IC is intended for cadets with a serious interest in emergency survival. This is a physically and mentally demanding course. The IC will be held in Maryland from 17-25 July. Cadets are NOT required to complete a Basic Course before attending the Intermediate Course, but the BC is encouraged if they have limited experience in survival training. Due to safety considerations, only 25 students may attend the IC each year.

ADVANCED COURSE
Description: The Advanced Course (AC) is intended for cadets who have already completed a full intermediate course and wish to continue their education in emergency survival. AC is broken into seminars devoted to specific areas of survival such as large scale disasters, aiding victims with special needs, and includes career orientation in national security, intelligence, and special operations. The AC will be held in Maryland from 17-25 July.
Serving since 1987.
