We stayed. British went to Great Britain or to Canada, some Tories ditto.

Some of the British changed to Real Americans. We Americans stayed. Those British remaining British went to Great Britain or to Canada. Some Tories ditto.

Colonials were never "citizens ", they were Subjects of the Crown.  We decided to become citizens, and subject to none.

You are right, and that is even more reason on my side. Not on the side of the guy that said "We were British."

Since we were subjects, we were definitely not British!
