Here is the medal after I had a chance to photograph the replica.
And should people wonder about the imagery on the front, these are two photos I provided. I *think* the Mint used them to model the artwork and cannot confirm with certainty if they did, for those wondering.

Great addition of the Mission Sleeve Patches. Good work!
A Great article, overall: http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20141214/news/141219158/ (http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20141214/news/141219158/)
It did mention our 17 hits and 2 sunk subs. :)
Also,
Just went on the mint website...all out of the large medals...Did they make 100 or something? Jeez...
Just received email that the medals have been shipped.
They're here!(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/USAFAUX2004/Civil%20Air%20Patrol/IMG_20141224_122615143.jpg) (http://s14.photobucket.com/user/USAFAUX2004/media/Civil%20Air%20Patrol/IMG_20141224_122615143.jpg.html)

Can you post close ups of the 1.5 inch coins? They look coppery from your images.
They do indeed. I'll unwrap one tomorrow, and take some pictures with a better camera than my phone.
Ixnay on the better camera. But it's on top of a mint proof set, and the color matches the penny, so I assume it's 2.5% copper and 97.5% zinc.

FWIW, a penny is not an alloy like a nickel. It's a layered coin, with zinc guts and a copper exterior. Here are the specifics - 97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper (core: 99.2% zinc, 0.8% copper; plating: pure copper)
Indeed. I cheated and went off the mint set data.

I received an email from the mint this morning that the four 3-inch medals I ordered have shipped. Presumably other folks will be receiving these medals soon.
Went online to check, 3" were back in stock. Ordered 2.

I noticed the initials 'DW' and 'MG' on the laurels on the reverse and 'DW' and 'DE' on the obverse. Are these the sculptors or are they commemorating/ memorializing individuals?

Well, Capt Hatkevich shook hands with me today and one of these was left in the place of his hand.
It is very pretty and well made, and a much-appreciated gift.

Ah... thank you very much! I didn't lose any sleep, but that was what I was looking for.
The Mint finally has a restock on the three inch presentation cases: http://catalog.usmint.gov/deluxe-blue-presentation-case-for-3-inch-medal-022.html?cgid=medal-cases (http://catalog.usmint.gov/deluxe-blue-presentation-case-for-3-inch-medal-022.html?cgid=medal-cases)
They are popping up on eBay already, that didn't take long...

The ads on ebay are for the 1.5 inch medals, not the three inch versions that were presented to the veterans and families. Besides, they can be purchased by anyone at the U.S. Mint's website, so they are not necessarily rare items. If a family sells one of the medals, that is entirely their choice.
I love eBay, but as always "caveat emptor" - a $7.00 medal for $13-15 bucks(ish) with "free shipping"
and using the USM's graphics of the gold medal to shill them.
How much you want to bet these "drop ship" form the USM? I guess "5 bucks is 5 bucks", right?
Maybe if I had that kind of chutzpah I wouldn't be sitting here running malware scans on a client's machine...
I did that once. Kindles were hot, I sold for a profit on eBay and shipping fees. Not my fault people are not smart enough to check availability. Made $700 in a week during college.
