Title: Air Force Security Forces Familiarization
Post by: Zilicone on May 31, 2011, 06:28:42 AM
I'm considering attending this year, however, I really don't know anything about it.

Has anyone attended? Is it worth it?
Thanks!

Having been in security forces early in my Air Force career, I would tell you to go for it. It's the closest to special forces as I ever wanted to get.

My era of Security Forces was a time when the career field was split into four specialties and my speciality, a security specialist, was more of a light infantryman than anything military police related. So my tenure was spent learning things like air base ground defense, patrols, various weapons, combat and riot control tactics. Some of us went on to various Army bases for other weapons and combat training or things like jump or air assault school.

These days, its all one career field with security forces doing everything from writing tickets to air base ground defense. A cadet would be introduced to all of this and things like OSI.

One thing about this career field is that there is a very close fraternity about the "defenders of the force" veterans and an even prouder history about Security Forces people, activities or operations -- like Chuck Norris, General Curtis LeMay, Operation Safeside, Bunker Hill 10 and the SAC Elite Guard -- that I hope you would learn about.

Not to hijack the thread, so if you want you can PM me, but if you have any questions about Air Force Security Forces feel free to ask.  Although I'm in the Air Guard, I am currently deployed as a Security Forces Tech Sergeant (MSgt in November).  Prior to AFSF, I spent 10 years as an Infantryman in the Army, both active and Guard, to include a deployment.

Again, I don't want to hijack this thread or start a discussion about military careers, but since some of you may be interested, it's always good to get information from someone with boots on the ground.

Unless something has changed....the SFFC is in December....there may still be time to apply.
