Title: You know you are a CAP cadet if...
Post by: titanII on January 26, 2011, 02:53:10 AM
Just thought it'd be a fun thread to see what you guys and girls think. I'll start you off:

You own one or more pair(s) of combat boots, and can shine them to a mirror

You learned to iron before you wore dress clothes, just so you could iron your uniform

You know that for some reason, a leaf symbolizes a Major

You find yourself counting cadence when you walk down the hall in school

Finish this off! This could be a really great thread!!

WIWAC in MCJROTC my friends and I would automatically fall into step together, in uniform or not.
I would iron military creases into my Sunday white shirt.
To this day I always have a straight gig line and check several times a day.
I can still polish boots to a mirror finish.
I tend to glance over someone's uniform to read their "resume" of awards and decorations.

+1 on Dad's 1, 3, 4, and 5.

I still walk in step with whoever I'm walking next to, frequently My Sweetie, who just giggles. She's retired Navy, too, so it's no big deal.

Gig line - always. And sometimes folks notice.

Polishing shoes gets a lot less of my time.

I did a brain dump the minute I no longer had to do mil creases, although I still know how. Now, I just don't have any urge to do so. Ever.

Hmmm...

1. When your field gear is the same stuff you use for the boy scouts.
2. Your Blues/BDUs are absolutely perfect yet you wear a t-shirt on a daily basis.
3. You can spin a rifle 8 ways from Sunday but you can't toss a pen in the air and catch it to save your life.
4. You know 7 and a half ways to shine your boots and dress shoes to a mirror.
5. You get used to being called by your last name.

You may be a CAP cadet if:
1) You've done as many outdoor activities this year as a Boy Scout.
2) You've flown more hours this year than some pilots.
3) You've run more this year than your school track team.
4) You've practiced more leadership skills than your school's FBLA members combined.

Dude, I know what you mean. I was a member for over 1 1/2 years before my C/DC knew my first name.  Especially funny, since I'm the C/CC.   ;D

Lets see what I've gathered from my 4 years of cadetism:

You know when you are a CAP cadet if...
1. You start marching down the hallways
2. You find uniform discrepancies in movies/TV shows
3. You sing cadence to yourself while running
4. You can't hang your shirt up without it leaning over
5. You can throw a 9 pound rifle 10 feet in the air and catch it without injury
6. You are on-line AND in step with a person next to you without thinking about it

There's others but either they've been posted or I can't remember them.

A few more:

1. You start collecting challenge coins which otherwise would be completely useless.
2. You can tell what every ribbon/badge is on a military or CAP uniform is and give a short summary of what it's awarded for.
3. You enjoy wearing BDUs.
4. You keep a copy of the regs on your phone for a quick reference during meetings.
5. You know the color of infinity, what infinity is, and how the cow is, and the 6 P's.

(1) Know more people by their first name than their last
(2) Find yourself screaming at the TV when someone on a movie calls an NCO "sir"
(3) Got your solo license before your driver's license (true story, happened to my CC)

1. (For the encampment junkies) You know you are a CAP cadet when you haven't had a "normal" Christmas or summer break in the last 5 years. (due to encampments or NCSAs)
2. You have the urge to get to the left of someone to talk to them.
3. You find yourself getting in-step with the person next to you in less than 3 steps.
4. You answer faster if called by your last name.
5. You can list off every ribbon you have, without looking, and tell the background of it.
6. It irks you to see the Curry ribbon as the top ribbon on an actors "military" uniform.
7. Of the almost 600 friends you have on Facebook, almost 450 are CAP. And you have to ask them periodically which encampment or activity you met them at because you have gone to so many (refer to #1).
8. When talking to friends, you realize that most of the time they are just nodding and agreeing with you when you start on a rant about another cadet or activity. Even after explaining several times what CAP is/does, you still get the blank stare.
9. You read and critique the uniform manual or read the drill manual to try to go to sleep.

Man, I don't remember your first name most days, and for almost 2 years, I didn't know it...

Only my family and a few coworkers use my first name.  Even my friends outside CAP use my last name.

1.  When walking down the street, you starting hearing "Left, left, left" in your head.

2.  When asked how you are doing today, you answer "Outstanding!" automatically.

3.  When your mom tells you to have a good day, you answer, "Hooah".

4.  Mom understands not only what that means, but why you said it.

5.  Your birthday wish list starts with "New Molle gear!".

6.  When you crash while playing a flight simulator, you don't reset, instead, you wait for the GT to arrive.

When you hear the National Anthem, Call to Colors, or Taps you look for the pole or where it's coming from and stand at attention.
You always stand at attention when the colors are presented at any sporting event.
Shiny insignia catches your eye like a shiny object to a raven.
You can identify the rank insignia of all US Armed Forces, CAP, and most JROTC.
You know cool acronyms like OPSEC, MAJCOM, NCSA, NESA, NCOIC, etc.
You know the phonetic alphabet.

1. Your girlfriend doesn't want to be seen with you when you wear your gore-tex
2. Your CAP Id is above your drivers license in your wallet
3. Your flight instructor has never had to teach you the phonetic alphabet
4. You've accidentally used "over" in ATC communications
5. You chose a SAREX over Homecoming
6. You've canceled a full day with your girlfriend to hunt for an ELT
7. You taught the cast in your High school Musical how to march in time, (true story, we're doing the sound of music this year)
8. You see a plane land and tune your scanner to 121.5 to see if his ELT went off
9. People ask what you do in your free time and you make up something besides "shining my boots" or "ironing my uniform" <- they wont understand
10. CAPTALK has been distracting you from your calculus homework for the last 15 minutes :D

^happens to my truck all the time.  :D You know you are a CAP Cadet when you don't have much of a life outside of CAP. You don't watch TV shows about plane wrecks anymore because you know to much about it. The local park rangers know who you are because you have done so much training there.  Here is another one I just thought of, you know you have been in CAP way to long if 90% of your pictures on Myspace/Facebook are of you in uniform doing drill, SAR or just chillin'. Extra points if your profile picture is in uniform.   8)

You know your a CAP cadet if you:
1.Can tell the class what service somebody is in by finding the service tape on their BDU's.(Last year, my ELA class was watching some TV Show, and the teacher paused it so everyone could guess who was causing all these weird things to happen and/or recording them. After a second, I saw a US Army service tape, and proceeded to tell the class that it was the US Army.)
2.Your most tramatic experience involves CAP. Mine was falling off the back of a John Deer Gator at night, and almost loosing my PC, Flashlight, and radio that was given to me
3.On other forums, you constantly boast about all the interesting stuff you collected or have done from CAP
4.You do your school chopping on USCAV. Anything you might want in about 3 months you buy from Vanguard
5.You report to the princible when you walk into the princables office
6.You accidently yell in your teachers face when they ask you to do something
7.You know military time off the top of your head and repeatedly confuse kids with it.

You know you're a CAP cadet if:
* You can carry on a full conversation with someone where nearly every other word is an acronym. (i.e.  Today we got a call from our GTL because an ELT went off, so we had to get a UDF team together, change into BDUs, grab our DHFs, L-pers, and 24 hour gear, and report to base at 1430 hrs for the SAR mission.)
* Your debate partner introduces you to her friends as "the army girl who flies planes and carries a knife."
* You've gotten confused looks when someone asks you for the time, and you answer "1836 hrs."
* You've checked baggage for free on Delta when flying to NBB because they counted your CAPID as a military ID.
* You constantly make fun of JROTC and the Boy Scouts because your CAP squadron is so much more squared away.
* You have accidentally answered "Hooah" when the pastor at church asks, "Amen?" And frequently do so when anyone asks, "Do you understand?" or "Are you ready?"
* Your friends know that if you don't respond when they call your first name, they can get a response by calling your last name.
* You've initiated a pushup contest at your church youth group, and won.
* Your friends will purposefully change their gait every few seconds when walking with you just to throw you off step, but in three steps you are subconsciously back in step with them - and it drives them crazy!
* You've gone to Walmart in BDUs and been thanked by one person for serving your country, then moments later been harangued by another for "killing innocent civilians."
* You've skipped out on parties because your ground team was activated to search for an ELT, and you are the only GTL in the area.
* You've had to explain to a confused non-CAP friend, "Its a CAP thing."
* Nearly every picture of you on facebook is of you in uniform, or at a CAP activity.
* Your email signature is your official CAP signature because most of your contacts are in CAP, and (sometimes) you delete it when emailing a non-CAP person.
* Your voicemail on your cell says, "You've reached Cadet (rank) (name)..."
* Most of your friends are in CAP, call you by your last name, and have never seen you in "civvies." The one time you met one of them outside a CAP activity and not in uniform, they didn't recognize you.
* You started yelling at the TV when the singer skipped a line of the National Anthem at the Superbowl.

According to regulation, you can stay in uniform when traveling to or from meetings, or during search and rescue missions. If you need to stop at Walmart on the way there/home to pick something up, that's totally legit. And if you have to stop at Walmart during a SAREX or GSAR to pick up supplies/food for your (or someone else's) 24 hr pack, that's also legit.

The regulation does stipulate that you may make necessary stops. Getting dinner on the way home sounds like a necessary stop to me, and where better than Walmart?

Don't get me wrong because I'm far from perfect and on rare occasions things come up, and I'm sure if the regs state it you can help me locate it. So far all I've found in CAPM 39-1, page 6, Table 1-1 indicates "Do not wear" the CAP uniform, "more than 1 hour following the close of the activity except for traveltime to and from such activities, for which the uniform is specified
(seminars, conferences, NEC, or NB meetings).
I don't see "necessary stops" mentioned.
Title: Re: You know you are a CAP cadet if...
Post by: ES Ninja on March 17, 2011, 01:40:59 PM
The point of that regulation is to ensure cadets do not go around wearing their uniform to show off. If you live over an hour away from your meeting, and need to make a stop at the store (or to get gas!) on the way home, that is perfectly understandable. When doing so, though, you must ensure you are carrying yourself in a professional way that brings honor to the military. And that is the point of that regulation - NOT to make you change uniform halfway home.

WIWAC all the senior NCOs and Officers would go to Waffle House after the meeting. On one occation we had active duty Air Force eating with us. haha yeah, I've seen that once or twice, we were all 18ish so I can understand why they might mistake us for regulars.

1. If you yell at the T.V. for improper uniforms in a show/movie.
2. If, when in civvies, you come to attention when an officer in uniform walks by.
3. When someone asks how you are you respond "Outstanding, Sir/Ma'am!"
4. You are upset when you can't shine your shoes.
5. Your non-CAP friends talk about you to others as "the air force dude".

I got some more.
You are fixing your hair in a mirror when you realize you were looking at your dress shoes.
You iron a sharp crease in all of your clothes.
When answering a question or making a statement, you say Sir or Ma'am.
When talking with your friends, you use CAP terms fluently.

3.When you go to the gym to "PT", and nobody knows what you're talking about

You communicate with your CAP friends at school using the phonetic alphabet so others won't understand.
You understand terms like SAREX, MAJCOM, WMIRS, FAA, CAB, CAC, etc.
You can name the entire grade structure of CAP, the USAF, and likely most or all US armed forces.

This is very true of ANY cadet. I went to the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets Junior Cadet Accession Program, a scholarship program for high school juniors and seniors in CAP, JROTC, Young Marines, and Sea Cadets. When we checked in, we were given a hat. Most decided they were going to wear it. Well, during a campus tour, we were going in and out of buildings. About 80% of the JCAP cadets took off their hats as we entered the building, the other 20% to soon follow.

At my school, we could have them out during passing period, lunch and before and after school. Being a senior, I knew how to either hide it from the teachers that cared or I had teachers that didn't care as long as they weren't teaching and the work got done. I really only had 1-2 teachers that cared and the others just put up with it because they knew would be doing it anyway, might as well not fight it.

This is why I love being a college student. Generally professors don't care if you use your phone in class (assuming you are bother other students). If you flunk because you spent the whole semester on Facebook, that's your problem. Same for eating/drinking in class and other things generally frowned upon in high school.

Yes, at the point this was happening and currently. I know that this isn't the greatest example. I can't stand behind it or away from it. I could fall into the trap of saying everyone else was doing it(which they were), but it was my choice.

What I do is walk in with a old 90's boombox, turn the volume all the way up, and when the teacher tells me I can't have it out, I say "I CAN'T HEAR YOU".

What I do is walk in with a old 90's boombox, turn the volume all the way up, and when the teacher tells me I can't have it out, I say "I CAN'T HEAR YOU".

I have the urge to test this out now...  >:D

There were seniors that had to make up 4 hours of detentions the Friday before graduation in order to walk. We had gotten out of school Wednesday.
