This chronicle of CAP aircraft woes and bent metal describes several minor maintenance issues, numerous pilot errors, etc.  It's an interesting read, and fodder for more than a few pilot/ops discussions (aka "safety meetings").  The last line in the document is a bit chilling...

The Blue Penguin became interested in CAP during the Steve Fossett search. He was very critical of CAP and as a result, put together another webpage about CAP here: http://blue-penguin.org/forum/pag/needles/needles.html  As with the CAP crash page referenced by Live2Learn, don't miss reading the bottom of the page.

Blue Penguin is from France. During the Fossett search, he and a Brit, "Redlands," traveled to the US to search, particularly looking at clues CAP seemed to ignore. After Fossett's plane was found, they returned to the US and went to the crash site where they found debris that hadn't been cleaned up during the recovery.

Regardless of this "Penguin" person's intent, a clear message that comes through from the sad tales in "needles" is the large number of accidents where survivors of the crash are woefully unprepared for their new and very hostile environment...   Washington State's aircraft SAR coordinator has compiled similar stats for crashes here.  It's absolutely true that, absent a flight plan, good survival preparations, and a little luck the search really is one for "a needle in a haystack".  FWIW, on that not too distant day when the ADSB mandate strikes we might??? see some improvement in the stats, at least for those aircraft that are ADSB compliant.  Especially if they're also 406 compliant.

Thanks for posting the links to these additional Penguin websites.  They too add useful information for possible safety discussions.  What do you suppose might be the metaphor intended by "Penguin" for his nom-de-plume??  Lives in a barren place (France), blends with the crowd (on the internet), hold his eggs (bits of knowledge) on his feet, circles slowly through the crowd - sometimes on the edge and others in the middle?  :)
