I get the same blank page. The computer has Java installed but it must not be what the spell checker is looking for. The default for me is to past the text to a word document do the spell check and repaste it to the reply box. Not the preferred mechanics for this.

Use Firefox. It has an on board spell checker.

Does not appear to work in IE 8, but it does work in Firefox 3.0.10.  IE does not always support some features of SMF... So either get ieSpell or Google toolbar for IE, or start using Firefox.
