We all know why November 22 is such a dark day in US history, and its connection to CAP history. An interesting side note, this is also the anniversary of the date that the USS BELKNAP collided with another US warship, burned, and was nearly destroyed. The ship she collided with? USS JOHN F. KENNEDY. Seven men died on BELKNAP, one on KENNEDY. BELKNAP was towed back to the states, and went through extensive repairs and recommissioning at Philadelphia. This disaster is cited as the prime reason that the Navy moved to all steel construction, versus aluminum, which was typical of the time.
