I just wanted to let everyone know that there is going to be a total lunar eclipse tonight.  It should be a great show, it starts around 2043 EST with the total eclipse beginning at 2201 EST and ending 2251 EST.  The skies are going to be really clear around me - it should be a great show.

The next total lunar eclipse isn't going to be until December of 2010 - so get those telescopes out!

For me, it's solar or nothing.

I've known about this for a little while now, what with my Astronomy class. Tonight's actually a lab night for me anyways. The kicker though is that we're doing open-house out at the Observatory to allow the public to come observe the eclipse. Which basically means I'm gonna have to stand around and look silly while people harass me with 1,000 dumb questions and try to steal the big ol' 12" scope I'm using for class, asking, "Hey can you show me the moon through that thing?!". Then again don't we get that enough already with CAP?   :P  I informed the cadets about it last night, I'm hoping they'll show up. We'll see.

I thought this thread was all about Bob... :D

Oh well, it's been clouding up all day here, so it's un likely we can see it in our area.

Being a photography and astronomy guy,  I'll have 2 cameras and 2 telescopes out tonight.

And that doesn't include my friend's gear!

Took a look around 2200, saw just a sliver of white moon left.  Didn't hang around for too long - WI tends to be bloody cold at night in winter, and I had some TV to catch up on.

I have it on good authority, that the eclipse3 was caused by cadets. They wanted to show "Cadet Power". They scheduled the eclipse through their aerospace education training. They promised to repeat the eclipse after they earn their Mitchells in 2010. Now they are planning an eclipse of the sun to show that Cadets Rule.

Not sure if anyone here is really interested, but I attempted to photograph the lunar eclipse last night (first attempt at stellar photography). I'm not really happy with how the full eclipse shots turned out, I couldn't get the shutter speed, lack of digital noise, and motion of the moon's orbit to cooperate so the final shots are a little "soft"

Anyhow...all shot with my trusty Nikon D200, first shots with my 80-400mm lens at 400mm, the last ones are with my 80-200mm at 200mm. Hope you enjoy. I know it was a bit cold in the northern latitudes last night to stand out and watch, it was a little chilly here too, I think it was about 75 with a sea breeze. After the last shot at 10:25pm (about peak) the clouds rolled in, and couldn't shoot the back half of the eclipse.

Cool, I didn't have the patients to stand outside and watch the moon for an hour, I walked outside at about 10:20 said "ohhh pretty" and went back inside. Anyone know if a "Time Lapsed" video has come out yet?

I got to see part of it, unfortunately my view was somewhat obstructed by those pesky trees in my area...
