Has anyone done IACE in the United Kingdom? How was it (in terms of staff, activities, schedule)? How long is the RAF Air Tattoo, and what are conditions like? What do cadets do there? Any input would be appreciated.

The International Air Tattoo is from 13 to 15 July 2018, and will include the RAF 100 celebration; read more at http://www.airtattoo.com.  This would be a **really** good year to visit and be part of IAT!  That said, LATORRECA's suggestion is a really good idea - directly contact a previous participant to get the latest info.  The CAP cadets I encountered in the UK all had a really enjoyable time, but that's a few - lots - of years ago.

Thanks for the info! I think the departure day is July 9th, and the normal activities start July 17th? Any idea what goes on in those buffer days?

You'll be in the Marriott Chrystal City hotel for those two days and nights. There will be classes on etiquette, what to do, not to do. Checking that you have all your paperwork,  tours of Washington, D.C., meet your travel companions, etc. On Monday. your group will be transported to Dulles A/P to catch your overnight flight.

Anyone else attended IACE UK? I haven't committed to going yet and any opinions would be seriously appreciated!!

I was an escort to the UK in 2005, so my information is definitely dated.

Overall, we were part of a large multi-national group. We were divided into three mixed groups, each with about 25 cadets and escorts, plus conducting officers, conducting cadets, local hosts, etc., for a total of perhaps 100 people all together. The schedule was impressive and well-run, and included a good mix of cultural "musts" (Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, etc.), ATC visits, RAF base visits and flying.

FYI, this year's schedule ("programme") is available to view at www.iacea.org. This year, it looks like the three parties are following basically the same route, on different days. In 2005, each party did this, then took off to a different geographic area; my party spent several days in Scotland and/or Ireland. It varies year-by-year.

I was impressed with the ATC program (including the fact that each squadron was issued a building for meetings!) and all the officers and cadets we met. A great experience!

Just read the program for 2018....the UK program looks really good.  The visits to RAF Wittering and Brize Norton should be very interesting, although Wittering no longer has combat aircraft, sadly.  However, the Coningsby visit will more than compensate!  Portsmouth Dockyard and HMS Victory are well worth visiting.  I was interested to see that there's gliding at RAF Marham, future home of the JSF; unless there's been a unit relocation recently, there isn't an Air Cadet Gliding Squadron based at RAF Marham.

I hope you are able to go....should be a very enjoyable time!

I have the privilege of serving as the SM escort for the UK this year.

If you accepted your slot, you should have an email from me waiting for you in your inbox!

Over the next couple of weeks we'll be going over all the unique things you'll need to know for the U.K., including a list of additional items you'll need to plan on packing.

Feel free to shoot me an email with any immediate questions or issues you may have.
