Don't forget to look for your CAP buddy...this s the "other" guy who attends his first meeting the same day you do.
You'll end up pretty darned close to this person, even if you have nothing else in common. It's weird, but it does happen.

I guess those are the people that turn out to become you life time buddy. Who knows. ;D
Heh, yeah- I hope it's better than my first one was ;)
...of course that was in Dec. 2001, and I'm still active. But I sure had to beat down the tics in politics.. and wait out others.
So... how did your first meeting go?
Hello fellow CAP Cadets. My first Civil Air Patrol Meeting went very well. I met up with a Newbie like me and I made friends with a High Ranking Cadet Senior Chief Master Sergeant. Wow that was a mouth load. ;D When I continue next week to my 2nd Meeting next Tuesday, I will fill out my Application with my $25 Application fee and then receive my BDUs.
Hooah. I am almost there. ;D
Glad you enjoyed the meeting and are joining! One word of advice, the only thing that will hold you back from promotion(usualy, at least to junior enisted CAP) is the PFT, so look at the requirements for your age and practice so you will be ready. That and... KNOW YOUR OATH!!! In order to be prmoted that is required of you, I know a cadet who didn't get promoted due to this! ;D

PFT or in CAP CPFT is Cadet Physical Fitness Training.
We follow the President's Challenge fitness rules. You should aim for 75% or higher, you will only need 30% to start but no reason not to shoot for the most you'll need now.

While I don't know a link to it, it is printed in the leadership text you will get with your aerospace modules. However, it is on your application and goes as follows: "I pledge to serve faithfully in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program and that I will attend meetings regularly, participate actively in unit activities, obey my officers, wear my uniform properly, and advance my education and training rapidly to prepare myself to be of service to my community, state, and nation." As for PFT, that is the physical fitness test, the requirements can be found on the CAP site(which I assume you know) by clicking the cadet programs link, in thet click ranks, then click the one for airman. Hope that helps, feel free to contact me if you have any questions along the way in CAP.
:-P bit late there
The Cadet Oath
"I pledge to serve faithfully in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program and that I will attend meetings regularly, participate actively in unit activities, obey my officers, wear my uniform properly, and advance my education and training rapidly to prepare myself to be of service to my community, state, and nation."
Very close gent's but your a bit off. Lets get him started on the right foot with
ALL of the right text shall we.
Quote from: CAPR 52-16"I pledge that I will serve faithfully in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program, and that I will attend meetings regularly, participate actively in unit activities, obey my officers, wear my uniform properly, and advance my education and training rapidly to prepare myself to be of service to my community, state, and nation."
LOL that's a good idea! Hmm apparently I only remember my oath perfectly while wearing a uniform.... and once it comes off...what oath? ;-D LMAO BTW, when in doubt bout anything cadet program, check 52-16
Nope, I'm sure you say it that way all the time.
I did back in my day, and then several years later when I took on Deputy of Cadet it was a good 3 months of constant correction until I could get the cadets to say it correctly.
Don't feel bad you're in good company probably in the 20+ thousand range
Thanks guys

NO!!!!! Read my quote from the regulation above. don't start down the path of getting this wrong from the start.
If anyone has a problem with you saying the right way, the way I posted above, Show them the regulation.
You are getting "I pledge to" in your head should be "I pledge that I will"
May seem minor, but it's not right regardless
Ok. Thanks for the warning. Wouldn't want to get my promotion blocked because of that. :(

That's great bout encampment(that is what its called)! But (at least in NY) don't you need to be airman to attend/ a member to apply? Hope your paperwork goes through fast! Then getting your first stripe is a piece of cake!

If its actually an "encampment", which by regs has a much more structured, audited curriculum than a normal activity, you'll have to have completed your Curry Achievement before you can go.
This is the first achievement of the Cadet Program, gets you your first stripe, and will in theory confirm you've learned basic uniform wear, drill, and other important things about being a Cadet. It generally takes 1-2 months to get there.
Most wings will allow you to apply before you complete it, but if you don't make it in time, you're not supposed to be allowed to participate. Generally most Wings have one encampment per year.
Also, in reference to your earlier post, the highest cadet "enlisted" or "NCO" grade we have is "Cadet Chief Master Sergeant". A "Senior Chief Master Sergeant" doesn't exist in CAP, and about the closet thing to that you'd find is a "Senior Chief
Petty Officer" in the US Navy.
As Ice says, better to get things right walking in the door.

No, the Goddard accompanies C/CMSgt, you get the Armstrong between Chief and C/2d Lt, which accompanies the Mitchell Award.
Are you seriously attempting to argue that you are correct on this.

Ok. I was mistaken then. (Didn't try to sound smart) Usually I would trust a .gov website over a Wikipedia website. But if I was wrong than I apologize for arguing back. :(
Armstrong is a non-promotional achievement. You get nothing except the ability to take the Mitchell in 2 months, and a ribbon

Considering the amateur quality of that site, I wouldn't. Also, bear in mind that the wing.cap.gov websites are just run by regular members with little to no vetting by national.
That Wikipedia site is regularly edited for content by hundreds of members, and overall is pretty accurate.
I would suggest you spend some time with CAPR 52-16, as well as other documents that can be found here: http://members.gocivilairpatrol.com/forms_publications__regulations/
The CAP Knowledgebase is also a good source of info: http://capnhq.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/capnhq.cfg/php/enduser/home.php?p_sid=tuUck5xj
Most of this will become much clearer once you join and get your starter kit, and spend some time with your unit leadership.
Thanks. Don't want to act like a butt the first few days on CAP Talk. ;D
Just a suggestion...
Since you are very new in the program, try to learn as much as you can and keep an open mind when people try to correct or explain/teach you something. A single meeting and technically not even a member yet is not enough experience to start debating with people who have probably been in CAP longer than you have been alive. I'm not trying to jump down your throat or anything, but just try to keep an open mind when you are being corrected about CAP information- until you have sufficient experience and factual references (such as actual regulations, etc) to debate otherwise.
All this being said, you seem very eager to join CAP and I applaud you for that. Keep up the motivation, get involved, and be a sharp Cadet. Welcome to CAP! :)
Thanks DBlair. I know. I am a natural born debater, and I need to control that especially when you guys know what you are talking about. Sorry, I sorta got out of control. :(
Don't worry, encampment will fix the debating with you real quick ;D. Just giving you grief- in all seriousness, there is so much in CAP that it is important to just take the first several months to learn all you can. Listen and learn.
Now, here is some help that I give to my new cadets. Curt and Joe have really stepped things up at NHQ:

Well. Today was my second meeting. I gave my application to my Commanding Officer and now I am a proud member of CAP. Yay. Thanks guys for the advice and so forth before I joined, I really impressed my CO with the information I have researched and learned before hand. Thank. :)
Sorry to burst the bubble BUT...
Congratulations on handing in your application, you are now an official applicant for membership.
The real fun comes when your application gets accepted by NHQ and you get listed as a member. You'll get a nifty membership card, eventually some books, and if you ask nicely you may get a brand new set of blues.
Oh boy. Ok. Well I should have it by next week. (ID and Portfolio w/textbook)
Don't listen to IceNine. Welcome to CAP! You should have a great time at your Squadron. It is one of the Best Units in CAP. Your Squadron Commander has worked very hard for a very long time to create an excellent unit, with great programs and a superior corps of Cadets and Senior Members (Officers).
Keep coming back to CAPTALK to let us know how you are progressing, and what you learn in the program.

Enthusiasm unfortunately is not conducive to realistic expectations. Unrealistic expectations cause hurt feelings and sour milk, or something like that

True, but surely we can make the argument that this Cadet will have no issues with NHQ as the SQD Commander vouches for him meeting the criteria to join. Unless Mom or Dad's check bounces, or the Social Security Number brings up multiple warrants for his arrest in some unknown database somewhere he should be treated as though he were a member.
Lets also remember he can print a temporary Card from E-Services as soon as he shows up on the "books", until his real card arrives.
We all could be so lucky to get a Cadet so excited about CAP he or she Joins CAPTALK before they even attend a meeting. CAPTALK is a great place to learn the good, bad and (unfortunately) ugly about our organizations.
Yup. I finally got to do some drills. Really exciting. We played something called "Knockout". That was exciting too. I was the first one out, but all is good. :)
Spike beat me to it

unfortunately, this is true. You are a official candidate, not a official CAP member yet. While im sure as noted their should be no problem clearing your application at NHQ, but their are reason for delays and denials(never seen one) and assumption is never a good thing. Hence, Early welcoming and as a hint once mailed it usually takes four(4) days before your posted in the NHQ system. Once your in the system you will be able to log into eService at http://www.capnhq.gov where you will be able to print a temporary membership card for proof of membership until your Hard membership card is received by mail.
Fun game, many names for it though. Played it at my squadron earlier, I love standing behind cadets then calling about face. The expressions on the cadets face is priceless, even better if they get supprised and knock into another cadet! :P
Hey all, I finally got my CAP ID today. Along with my Blues, and other important stuff. :D
All I have to do is Wait for the Snail Mail to deliver my boots from Spike. (Thanks again Spike) .

Ah. Sorry about that again. I guess I will keep posting updates in this thread. :)
Congratulations! You are now a member!
Had PT today. :(
32 in - Sit & Reach
16 - Push Ups (I know I am horrible)
10.3 sec - Shuttle Run
40 - Sit and Reach
Thanks for everyones support, I am just waiting for the good 'ol Blues. :D
Gotta start somewhere (as I'm re-learning :-) )
Its not bad for your first time, and 40 sit up/curl up/crunches is wht u mean? Just try to team up with another cadet and practice together, that's what I do.
Its Fun. I was confused while we were drilling back. Our Cadence went
"Eft, Eft, We are Military, RIGHT
Eft, Eft, (Pause)Right, Eft."
As you said before somewhere on this forum, "We are not really Military". It just confused me. ???
hmmm... I've heard one that goes your milirary left, but never that one. Don't worry bout it, although we aren't to clear things up ;D
Per AFMAN 36-2203 that isn't a correct way to call cadence, but we'll leave that alone.
I have never heard it called like you described, I have heard 'left, left, your military left' though.
Either way, CAP is associated with the Air Force, but we are not the military. Some cadets (and Seniors) take the association further than it actually extends, you may have encountered one of these individuals. In any event, I wouldn't worry too much about what your Flight Sergeant (or whoever was drilling you) was saying, beyond making sure you were on step.

This is from the 36-2203.
2.5.1. The instructor counts cadence to acquaint students with cadence rhythm. When trainees get out of
step, the instructor either corrects them by counting cadence or halts the element and then moves them
off in step. Counting cadence helps teach coordination and rhythm. Cadence is given in sets of two as
follows: HUT, TOOP, THREEP, FOURP; HUT, TOOP, THREEP, FOURP. To help keep in step,
unit members should keep the head up and watch the head and shoulders of the person directly in front
of them.

My Actual ID Membership Card came in today. I printed my temporary out on the 21st. Now there is no need for the temporary card :D
If it doesn't have a picture on it, it's not an ID card, it's a membership card.
Op. Ok. My "Membership Card" Came in today. I think I have to upload a photo to get my ID Card.
Yes you do, the guidelines are available on eServices at the photo upload link. Then you have to have it approved by your CC and then you can order it from the Photo ID payment link. I think its 4 dollars. But you may want to wait till your an airman because it says your grade on the card.

Im not sure, but CADET would be better. But if it says C/AB then it may be good to wait. Maybe the kb says something.

If the squadron keeps up with online promotions on eServices, the grade is updated automatically when each achievement is completed. Otherwise it only updates when one reaches a milestone award (C/SSgt, C/2d Lt, C/Capt, C/Lt Col, C/Col).

I may be wrong on this, but last I heard, if the squadron keeps up with the promotion in eServices, NHQ sends out a new membership card with updated grade.
I would much rather it say CADET on it than it get updated every 2+ months. Waste of money IMO.

If his unit is like the one I'm in, C/AB's can participate in a SAREX if they've passed their GES. Depending on the scenario, they might be restricted to base, but there are lots of things they can do.
For instance, they can:
help copy radio messages
assist at the sign-in desk
run messages
and be a go-fer anywhere except the aircraft ramp or taxiway
Most of our SAREX's also have side training activiities so instead of just waiting to be deployed, the ground teams work on GTM & GTL tasks.
Except that Curry is a prerequisite for GES. A cadet cannot have a GES until they have finished the Curry Achievement.

And thus can not be at a SAREX.
Quote from: Lunsford on June 17, 2009, 06:07:06 AMIn other news, I have Completed my LL1, PT Test, Drill, and Moral Leadership. This upcoming SAREX will count as an activity and that will finish my check list. This June 30th I should be getting Promoted to Cadet Airman. :D
I think you squadron leadership might be misinterpreting the activities requirement for the Curry achievement. I could be wrong, but the way I understand it is that you do not necessarily need to attend an activity for each achievement, but instead need to participate actively in squadron meetings and in squadron activities for which you are able. Since you should not participate in a SAREX unless you have a GES rating, which requires the Curry achievement, I can't see how that could be a requirement for your Curry achievement.
By the way, great job on all you have done in such a short time.
My Commanding Officer told me that I would be able to partake in this upcoming SAREX. And Yes, if you actively come to meetings then you can use that as your activity. But. My CO said that I would be able to participate in a SAREX as log as have my 101 Card.

Your 101 will show up as invalid if Curry has not been put into the system.

Occam's razor: He either A) doesn't know the reg or B) is willfully violating it or C) you will be promoted before this weekend.
I hope that the answer is C.
I hope to dear God that it is "C"

I just looked you up in ops quals and it doesn't show GES yet. So your Curry has not been entered as of now, 19:40z. If you try and print you 101, it will say invalid on it. You might want to bring this up to your commander, otherwise you will most likely be sent home from the SAREX when you try to sign in.

I will call him up, and it might be what gistek said:

What he said violates the regs. You must have Curry to get GES. You must have GES to participate in ES. Thus you must have Curry to participate in ES. There is no legal way around it.
Ok, I guess I will have to make some phone calls.

Good luck. If you meet all the requirements for Curry then a promotion would be the easiest thing to do.
Looking at the first post, he meets all requirements for the Currey. It coiuld be the Squadron is waiting to hold all promotion ceremonies later this month. But still the Currey should be entered in eservices now so the Currey and GES shows up.

Do you think I could still make it to this Saturdays SAREX?

Although posting if for the world was probably not the smartest move... That's why we have PM's.

I didn't post anything OPSEC or PERSEC. I merely told him about something any CAP member can do. You must be a member in good standing and have an account. I don't see what the problem is?

People who aren't members don't normally have access to it, but now they do. I'm just throwing out my $.02. If someone posted my quals without my consent, I'd be a little peeved.
I don't mind. Just was confused. :-\
Just got a promotion to Airman. :D I just need to sign.
Doesn't that make you C/Amn (Select) or something? i.e. not quite a C/Amn yet. >:D
