http://www.staradvertiser.com/2017/02/07/business/business-breaking/dunkin-donuts-returning-to-hawaii-after-decade-absence/

"Hawaii's first Dunkin' Donuts shop in more than a decade will be near the Honolulu Airport as part of a development project that
includes an IHOP restaurant, a Shell gas station and an Aloha Island Mart convenience store."

"The company announced an agreement with Dunkin' Brands in May to open as many as 15 of the donut and coffee shops statewide."

I have no idea how you guys have kept the faith so long, but HELP IS ON THE WAY!!!

Yeah, they tried to make a big deal about Dunkin Donuts coming to Southern California.
Was greeted with a monumental meh...
Krispie Cream opened a few stores about 10 years ago. AKAIK they're all closed.

They used to have Drunken Blownuts in Hawaii some years ago but it didn't last. Only Kreepy Kreme outlet is in Maui. Best donuts (locals prefer malasadas) are Leonard's, Kamehameha (home of the poi malasada) and Liliha bakeries.

And since you asked... we ain't getting one in Kwajalein, unless we can bribe the ATI flight crew to bring us some! We do have a bakery on island but there are days when there are no donuts or pastries because the barge is late.

I guess you didn't read the picture caption.... ::)

Or your reading comprehension needs a little work! >:D

Yeah, I read it. But my reading comprehension is not bad.

The thought of a state not having a single Dunkin Donut store is impossible for me to bear. That I cannot believe that caption to be true.

Or have you not tasted any?

It seems, PH, that you are of the side that do want Dunkin Donuts off Hawaii...

Leonards Malasadas are far superior.

I tried Krispy Kreme. Once.

It made my teeth hurt.

When I was a youth living in Virginia, many moons ago, my parents thought Krispy Kreme (KK) products were the greatest thing ever, and after we moved on to other places, would constantly compare the local donuts to KKs. Having been too young to recall what KKs were like, I always wondered what the big deal was. Finally, when I moved to Florida, in 1990, I got the opportunity to sample their wares. I found them wanting in many respects, and haven't eaten any since. We had a couple of KK stores here in San Diego, but they didn't last long. There are four stores left.

We have six Dunkin' Donuts stores local to me, three of them being on military bases. The Winchell's count is three. The local donut shops pretty much have the market cornered.

You haven't eaten a donut until you eat a fresh piping hot Krispy Kreme.  It melts in your moth and taste like a little cloud from Heaven...  Just sayin'.

Malasadas? I do not know...

Spanish being my first language, I read Malasada as the Spanish words mal asada.

Translating mal asada to English, it comes to badly roasted.    ;D

That makes me think. Bad preparation, missing ingredients, not fully cooked...

Edited to add:

I did not know what a Malasada was, so did a Wikipedia search for it. It says the name comes from the Portuguese, meaning under cooked!

;D ;D >:D

Oh, the article implies that a Malasada is just a sugar-coated donut...

HA!

So I think we've established empirically that the only thing more popular than a uniform thread is a donut thread!

Nope.

The order of popularity is:

1. Uniforms
2. Coffee
3. Donuts

I do uniforms for people in my squadron.

(grade, nametapes, wings, etc)

I tell people "Whatever you think is an appropriate amount, just throw a Dunkin's card in the pocket for that."

So to say "Will sew uniforms for coffee" is not a trick statement.

It was the Portuguese who brought Malasadas to Hawai'i.

Well, it follows.

1. The Portuguese develop the Malasadas.
2. The Portuguese travel to Hawaii.
3. The Portuguese work, play, and eat.
4. The Portuguese let everyone else on a state secret: the Malasadas!
5. The Malasadas fight a civil war, since they are donuts anyways, with Krispy Kreme and Donkin Donuts.
6. The Malasadas win the Civil War!

As they should. No matter what part of the country. Regional preferences are important. The Applebeeization and McDonaldsizing of America takes away from the novelty of regional specialties.

Although SuckDonald's in Hay-waii and Goo-am (misspelling intentional ;) ) does offer regional specialties not available anywhere else: their Local Deluxe breakfast (steamed rice, scrambled eggs, Portuguese sausage and Spam), Spam Egg McMuffin and McSaimin (doesn't come close to real saimin), along with the occasional taro and coconut pies. Booger Kink has a similar local kine menu. (Not on Kwaj - the Booger Kink there does nt do breakfast.)

Spam? Whyaaaat?  someone called me?

I'm currently in Europe for some DoD rotary wing DVE testing (fog, snow, and ice degraded visual environment), and they are serving the engineers and pilots these wonderful German doughnuts called "Krapfen", filled with like 9 kinds of fruit filling. YUM. Apparently they're a traditional part of the annual Fasching lent festival (Karneval - this week until next Tuesday, which is fat Tuesday).  If we eat any more, we'll have to redo all our weight and balance calcs.

Punch "faschingskrapfen" into google, and look at the images. Wow.

Hagebuttenkrapfen
Zwetschgenkrapfen
Eierlikörkrapfen
Schokoladen-Nougatkrapfen
Himbeerkrapfen
Cappuccinokrapfen
Champagnerkrapfen
The list goes on...

You may like them, but to me a donut is that sugared confection with a hole in the middle. Anything filled with jelly or other stuff, is not a donut.

And you are making me hungrier, dear sir! I had no breakfast or lunch and it is 12:38 EST.

Anywhere you find a sizable Polish-American community, there's always paczki (punch-ski), which are essentially jelly donuts served until Mardi Gras.

Its dark here - after seven thirty at night - and I'm going to miss my Squadrons PT night tonight, which I could use very much right now thanks to all the German doughnuts at the beginning of the day and the German beers at the end of the day. I think I'd have trouble making the FIRST mile tonight (GA045 typically runs a three mile PT).

Having grown up in Detroit, pączki was always a peripheral thing to the non-Polish kid (like pierogi, or gołąbki)

Then I became an adult, and realized "Whoa, this ain't no ordinary bismark!"

I miss me some pączki.  Really

Ha HA!  So, I'm back CONUS, and apparently lost 12 pounds while TDY. Take that, science! Hard work, beer and doughnuts triumph again. Well, probably the hard work, and the hotel workout rooms.

(If you count Air France losing my luggage, I lost 62 lbs).

Cheers
