This past week several local CAP members and I had the opportunity to meet and listen to Mr. R.A. "Bob" Hoover--a man who knew Orville Wright and started a couple of stories with "When Chuck and I were flying..." It was simply incredible.

Oh, and Sean Tucker, probably one of the best aerobatic/airshow pilots ever, was there, too!

Bob Hoover was flying the chase plane when Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in 1947.
They had also flown together in Europe during WWII.

He's a really nice guy and a true gentleman.

BGen Yeager said Mr. Hoover was the best pilot he had ever seen and Gen Jimmy Doolittle said he was the best stick-and-rudder pilot ever born. High praise indeed from two other legends of aviation.

It is amazing how far the world has come in effectively two lifetimes. When Orville Wright was born, horses, trains and ships were the primary means of transportation. He lived to see Chuck Yeager break the sound barrier for the first time. Chuck Yeager and Bob Hoover still walk amongst us lesser mortals and we have seen man land on the moon and send spacecraft nearly out of the solar system.
